JQuery :: Ajax User Validation - Execute After User Finish Typing

I'm creating an AJAX user validation so that when a user types in a username, it checks it in the database to see if it exists. I want it to execute after the user finishes typing. I've tried using:
$("#username_field").keyup(function(){
which works, but I don't want a query executed every time the users presses a key. I was wondering if there was a better way to do it. Meaning I what the check to be preformed after the user finishes typing.
is it possible to track whether user is typing in the browser's address bar or aside google search box ( which appears in most of the browsers besides address bar)? if yes, I would like to know HOW? references are welcome.
Currently my site uses dual session checking one in the server side (about 30 minutes) and the other on the client side (10 minutes). Once the timer ends and the page hasn't been refreshed the client side checking will end the current session. This is good if the user is just viewing but the problem occurs if the current page has forms that could take more than 10 minutes. My forms and fields are all dynamic and my javascript for this session checking is found on one template found on all pages. Is there a way to do this: detect if the user is typing? if yes do/stop the timer else reset the timer and start detecting again
what im trying to do is that the body background color of my site changes automaticaly when the user types it into a form (the page doesnt have to refresh) would that be possible?
I have a registration page with a username field and every time a character is type I would like to call a javascript function to test for a unique username. My function is working fine but I'm currently using onChange to call it and I noticed that onChange is less of an actual onChange and more of a onChange if onBlur. Is it possible to run the script every time a character changes even if the user is still typing? Note, I'm using ASP.NET in VB to write this page but I'd like to do this with javascript and not post back if at all possible.
I've already developed a system for doing this which isn't perfect i'm wondering if there is a better solution. Here is the code I got atm.

I don't like the use of key == 8 and length == 1 to detect that chatmsg box is empty, but the event triggers before the val() of the chatmsg actually changes. So is there nothing better I can do?
I have a script that runs some jQuery and appends it to a <div>. I only want this script executed if a user is using IE7 or higher since jQuery doesn't work with IE6. How can I do that? Also, if they aren't using IE7 or higher I don't wnat to display the <div> that the results go into. How would I go about doing this?
I want to execute a script when the user clicks the button. Currently in my html doc. i have the button declared. <input type="button" id ="button" onclick='notEmpty() value="Play"/> When the button is clicked, i execute the notEmpty() function and I want to execute a script inside the notEmpty().
I have recently downloaded the jQuery Validation Plugin, and I want to use the bottom part of the demo [url] (Validating a Complete Form) and I have some questions to ask:
1. I want the validation to work after the user clicked "Submit"
2. If a column is wrong (username already taken or password length invalid) I want not only error message but also a picture in front of the error message.
3. I hope that after the user clicks "Submit" and then found a column is wrong then correct it, after the user corrected it and click to other place or other column the validator starts again to check the column the user just edited whether the user just corrected a wrong column or edited a correct column into error.
4. I hope to display a image in right of the column if that column is correct after the validator works.
In a registration form middleName field is optional. When the users enters his/her middleName, then it should validate that field. I have used the following code to achieve the above scenario, but it is not working.

I'm working on a program, it's a java servlet. It's interacting with an oracle DB. I need to add users and privaledges to the DB, but do not want people typing random usernames, I need to force them to use their company ID, i.e jmsmith, which is the username they log into their terminal from.
What I need to know, is there anyway possible to grab their current username from windows? i.e. a query to windows to see what user is currently logged into the terminal?
I am a student and new to JavaScript, my problem is I am willing to do JavaScript form validation for emails , text etc. But on one of the forum I found out JS is not a very good way to do validation as JavaScript can be easily turned off by end-user and we shld always do server side validation also, but due to some concerns I want to stick to JavaScript (client side) validation.
My scenario is somewhat like Ive a form and a button in it which on being clicked calls a JavaScript function that will validate the fields and then submit the form through form.submit(); So my question is if JavaScript is turned off on end user then with validation the end user will also be not able to submit the form as the form is being submitted in a JavaScript function (which is turned off)? If this is thn cool.
But is it somehow possible to hack this procedure, and one can skip the JavaScript validation but can still submit the form? My primary concern is not to let pass any malicious or improper data (sql-injections, poorly formatted strings etc. to the server db)

I am looking to add an email validation to my new user registration form. Currently, we do not validate (or activate) a new user via an activation link in the email. We don't have that process. I'd like to get my hands on the code to randonly create a security code and the actual code to sent the validation email. Can anyone help me out here? I'm absolutely new to PHP or ASP coding. I do know some HTML.
I have to come up with a user authenication page the logs the user in and also gives them access to do the right things. I have attached the code and the access file and have got started on a few things.I first need to create a login page with the fields username and password have that check the access database and then proceed it to a page to do the following depending on the user access. For The Login button to even be enabled the username and password must have a value in it. I have no idea how to do that

PS i know about super Gecko onclose event which fires when browser window is closed, but i could not find such method in IE.
I'm so happy my jquery is dispatching a serverside script (ajax) and it is working I have verified in the database.Now I would like to provide some feedback to the user so first go will be alert, later I will do something snazzy.I am just getting head around jQuery, so please excuse noobness of question. I will think that either one or the other of these alerts below would fire, but neither of them do and nothing also logs in the console.
I've been reading about jquery and ajax and I'm not exactly 100% sure as to how to implement it. Essentially I have the following: A textbox A select box Another select box
As the user fills data in the textbox and then clicks off I want the javascript to fire, submit the value in the textbox to a url (I can handle the backend side of it all fine) which will then send new data to the select boxes. Similarly for the second select box when a user clicks off (After selecting) I need the jquery to fire again. Im developing a JSP site... my user information validation page is not working and its giving that responseXML object is null...Im not using any XML file to fill the data here.... all the messages custom messages are loaded from the JSP page....My Valildation.js file as below.....

Not sure if I posted this in the right area since its a Javascript/PHP related problem.I have no clue how to check if a user didn't leave the site.Ofcourse you can use the Onunload() or Beforeunonload() function.But some browsers like Opera and Safari and who know what other browsers don't support it.Is there any other alternative?Like expecting server side each X seconds a AJAX request from the user?If the user doesn't send a request, the user has left.

My solution idea was to fake the ajax call like this:
I got this parameter from Firebug, and i get the same answer as the "manual"-click. It's javascript code, beginning with "for...". however the dialog doesn't open, the DOM node isn't added and i get the alert "Error! Status = 200 OK"
So I just figured: why the comlicated way with ajax, can't I somehow fake the real manual click? If someone knows a way with ajax or faking the click?
I was wondering if there's a quick and simple way to notify a user if an ajax connection is broken, for example you're calling a file, but due to your internet connection, the file cannot be relayed back to you, so the existed javascript code on the initial page you're on, notifys you of the problem.
