AJAX :: Way To Notify A User If A Connection Is Broken
Nov 28, 2010
I was wondering if there's a quick and simple way to notify a user if an ajax connection is broken, for example you're calling a file, but due to your internet connection, the file cannot be relayed back to you, so the existed javascript code on the initial page you're on, notifys you of the problem.

I have a script which needs to detect when the internet connection is lost and hold the content of the web page until the connection is restored.
I have been given a head start with a small javascript which I am trying to get to work.
My web page, I have a web page which contains some text and graphics but more importantly it also has an iFrame. The iFrame connects to an SQL database and displays data which is refreshed every 20 seconds.
Because the internet connection at the location where the script will be running I get connection loss which makes the iFrame loose its data. The Javascript I am working with is below.

I'm recently programming a website with ajax and no i have found a solution for the back button problem (broken) on the internet, but it doesn't work on IE. it works on firefox, chrome, safari,...
Every time the user changes the page the url is stored in history with this code:
Code:
It adds after the url a '#' sign with the name of the page...
After that the program will store the url in a non-displayed div
And now i've set up an interval that checks the url adress bar and that div if they are not the same the page will load the url in the adress bar here is the code:
Code:
I've checked the problem with IE. IE will not read the current adress bar. It's always reading the url of the current page but not the url of the adress bar. And i've tried almost every combination with document.location, window.location, href, hash,...at least here's is my url:[url]

Ive tried several approaches and even copy/pasted from [URL] Im using Google Chrome 5.0.375.70 beta and the error is always the same: Error: INVALID_STATE_ERR: DOM Exception 11 when debugging the client side I see the readyState is always 0 (connecting), no other error is shown. The server is set to output anything that it receives and in this case it doesnt seem to be getting anything. Checked firewalls and that shouldnt be a problem. Its worth noticing that one time it did connect, and I was able to "chat" with the server, refreshed the browser and never again, restarted the server and nothing. I havent made any change in the code prior to the refresh so really dont know what could be it...

I'm trying to implement a simple chatting website. For now what the code does is checking every 10 seconds if there are new posts stored in the database (newer than the last check, 10 seconds ago). Is there a more efficient way than doing this with a timer??? for example, is there some kind of event listener attached to the server that would notify the client whenever the db is updated?

I'm creating an AJAX user validation so that when a user types in a username, it checks it in the database to see if it exists. I want it to execute after the user finishes typing. I've tried using:
$("#username_field").keyup(function(){
which works, but I don't want a query executed every time the users presses a key. I was wondering if there was a better way to do it. Meaning I what the check to be preformed after the user finishes typing.

My question is, if I download javascript from a server (say Facebook), and then I send out a request to view some photos. The sever sends me back a list of IPs of other servers which have those photos. Now can I set connection to the other servers via the javascript? Or does the javascript can only talk to the original server?

Not sure if I posted this in the right area since its a Javascript/PHP related problem.I have no clue how to check if a user didn't leave the site.Ofcourse you can use the Onunload() or Beforeunonload() function.But some browsers like Opera and Safari and who know what other browsers don't support it.Is there any other alternative?Like expecting server side each X seconds a AJAX request from the user?If the user doesn't send a request, the user has left.

Not sure if this can be done with javascript but I would like to find a way to detect if an image is missing and replace it with a default image instead of the dreaded RED X showing up.
So - Is Javascript the way? Or should I look elesewhere?

I'm having trouble finding example code to detect the presence of an Internet connection. It doesn't seem to be a very frequently asked question, as all I need is the answer yes or no (is the user connected or not).
I'm not interested in speed detection or any other aspect of the connection, just its existence or not. The reason is to be able to intercept link clicks on a CD-based set of HTML pages and pop up a warning if there is no connection; otherwise pass the request through to the net.

In jQuery 1.4.4 I could load a JSON file from subdomain2.website.com to subdomain1.website.com without any problems. When I upgraded to jQuery 1.5 this didn't work anymore.
Is this a jQuery bug
$.getJSON("http://subdomain2.website.com/resources/data.json", function( data ) {
console.log("data");
});
