Intercept Existing JS Functions (hook Them)?
Mar 31, 2011
I'm working on adding a WYSIWYG editor (TinyMCE) to the PHPBB3 message board software.Right now I'm trying to make the installation as foolproof as possible (that is, minimize the amount of file editing a person has to do to install it).One big stumbling block I have is that an existing, stock piece of JS code needs to have "hooks" added to it.
For example, original code:
function initInsertions()
{
var doc;
[code]...
I need to add little pieces of code all over that one JS file. Rather than editing the file, is there a way I can "intercept" a function as it's called, insert or do MY added function, then continue on with the original code?The reason I can't simply provide an edited copy of that JS is because people may have added other mods to their code and installing my copy would "break" all of their other mods.

I'm trying to group some existing top-level functions inside a closure (to avoid polluting the global namespace) but I'm not quite getting it to work. First, all the JS works outside my anonymous function, but once I put it in the anonymous function I get an error of "crossfade is not defined". I'm not quite getting why the the setInterval/crossfade works outside the anonymous function but not inside. Anything inside start() should be able to see vars/functions outside start() and it should all be protected in the closure created by the top-level anonymous function? I'm not trying to access anything *within* crossfade(), I'm just trying to execute it.
Code:
(function($) {
//vars up here that internal functions can access
//also using some jquery inside here, so using $
function crossfade() {
//body here
}
//other functions
function start() {
//body here
cInterval = setInterval('crossfade()', 5000);
}
})(jQuery);

I am beginner in JavaScript. I would like to intercept all click events on my document. I use this function for that:
document.onmousedown=click;.
It works well. But I would like to continue the execution code on a other button or anything else.
Example:
1)Click anywhere intercept click->Execute the code in function click().
2)Click on a link…. intercept click -> Execute the code in function
click() ->Load the link(http://test.html)
3)Click on a button… intercept click-> Execute the code in function
click() ->Execute the code for the button(submit, or other javascript)

I've been working on this site for learning purposes for awhile now and recently added pagination so its easier to look through submitted articles and pictures for the site. I got the pagination working originally with jquery so no page refresh needed to be done.Then I tried to use a nicer pagination look thru css as suggested by this wonderful site... nice looking css paginationI altered my javascript scripts to reflect the changes for which #div > a to intercept the click commands so ajax can be ran but it seems to not be doing so. In other words the ajax is not being ran and the whole page is being updated. Also it seems to traverse both the articles and picture sections when I try to use the pagination links for the articles.If you use firebug you can see all the source however ill submit the javascript to make it easier Functon to Show out Busy Div
function showBusy(){
$('#ajax-content').block({
message: '<h1>Processing</h1>',

I want to hook into validation success/failure events, but don't see an API to do this?
i.e. I want to enable/disable a particular set of controls depending on the state of validation.
Is there a way to do this? Am I missing something?

how do I hook a button click event so that my handler fires first but does not affect the firing of other clickhandlers for the same button?
What I want to do is hook all the form submit button click events. When a submit button is clicked, my handler will stuff some hidden fields into the form the button is contained within. Then the handler returns and the built in form submit button handler posts the form back to the server.

An existing JSP is generating the HTML page and table. I have retro-fitted it so that it adds to each input field a 'trigger' to the onkeyup event.
The purpose of this trigger is check for the the cursor keys being pressed (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT) and then if it is a logically valid move, shift to the next cell in that direction.
Now, the function it calls, doOnKeyUp, for the most part is working fine... when the input field in the table cells are a textbox or textarea, my method can re-focus the fields appropriately.
HOWEVER, I am having a huge headache when the input field is a combo box. Basically, the value of the combo box is changed with the cursor keys (which is default combo box behaviour (I think)), instead of moving to the next editable cell in that chosen direction.
Problem #1: My question: Is there a way to intercept/override the various onKey events or similar for the combo boxes. For the combo boxes, I want to continue to move between table cells UNLESS a do something specific, like press the spacebar to entire an update/modification mode for the current cell. Everything I have done so far does not prevent the combo box events from triggering.
Problem #2: Also, I tried a nasty hack to try and get it to work, by trying to switch the combo box's value back 1 spot (if it appeared to be needed) by changing the <combo box>.selected value. However, that change never appears to be taking hold, so it is staying at whatever the original selected value was. For this one, I am just curious as to the correct way to have javascript change the selected value in a combo box and make it "stick" and make it applied to the view/UI?
Code example:
You can probably tell by the code that I had been trying various things to change the combo box's selection via javascript, but none has worked for me.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here but I'd like to know if there is a "proper" way to attach a single callback to both a deferred Object's done() AND fail() methods?What I really would like to be able to do is support both a catch-all callbackAND promises on the same function.

[I posted this on the Developing jQuery UI forum as well, but perhaps it is more relevant in this forum since it is about the html() method...] Is it possible to "override"/"hook"/"replace" the html() method on particular elements, and if so, how? Or, are there any events raised when the html is changed by a call to html()? The reason I am asking is that I would like to detect when html() is called on an element in order to do some pre-processing before the html is changed and some post-processing after the html has changed. Further background: I am creating a ui widget myDialog, extending ui.dialog.
var myDialog = $('<div></div>').myDialog({...});
And if the user loads or changesthe content with
myDialog.html('here is some content');
[code]....

I have written a number of functions designed to return frequency data on 1000 randomly chosen numbers using different math functions for the rounding. I would like to include all of these functions within the wrapper of another function so that only one call is needed to get returns from all of the 'inner' functions. However, while each of the functions works in isolation, the moment I wrap them in another function they stop working. :confused:
The following code is one of the functions 'frequencyWrapperOne' that has been wrapped in the function 'testWrapper'. A call to testWrapper does nothing.
function testWrapper()
{
function frequencyWrapperOne()
{

I have an iframe. I load a page within it. The page I load is a php page that I build with a table with the id of 'readmail_table'. My iframe is 'readmail_frame'. Someone clicks on a message title outside of the iframe and I load the contents of the message in the iframe from the database in my table. Sometimes this takes longer than others depending on how large the message is. What I am doing here is letting the contents load then calculating the width and height of the table and then increasing the iframe's size so there are no scrollbars. This works 98% of the time but I ran into an issue where the table does not exist yet in the iframe and the JS code errors out. So what I did then was add a local var, set it to false then had a while loop check for the table and once it finds it, set the var to false and run my code. Again, mixed results. Sometimes this works then others I get that the table id I am looking for is null but my if statement in the while loop is checking to see if != null
[Code]...
Like I said, most of the time this works exactly how I need it. I just need a fool proof way to determine that this table is in fact on the page. I am not sure why it works sometimes and not others since I am looping until it is there

I need to check for a particular window which I opened as a popup,
already exists, before I try to open the same again. I achieved that
with the following code. So this is fine.
var myWin = null;
function openPopup(aURL){
if (( myWin==null) || myWin.closed) {
myWin = open(aURL,"myWin");
}
/* Window is already opn, thus maps the url to the same window
and give focus */
else {
myWin.location = aURL;
myWin.focus();
}
}
Now my problem is I need to do a similar check for a page thats been
href to the top.location
top.location=aURL;
In this situation if this same code runs again, i need to check if this
window is already open, and if so not to open it. Can it be done in a
similar way like the above.

and a property called 'bar' with a value of 1 is to be added to it using
JSON. If I try the following it only demonstrates my ignorance:
var str = "{foo:{bar:1}}";
eval(str);
alert(foo.bar) // gives undefined
Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong here?

I came across Marijn's helper function again called forEach. It does just what it sounds like it does, and is one of those things one would consider adding to their own personal little library like getElementsByClassName...My question is, I've heard/seen that Mozilla (and only Mozilla at this point) indeed HAVE a forEach function, and I do most of my beginning testing in a recent-stable Mozilla browser, so I'm not 100% sure but I think the Mozilla forEach might work... what happens if I write my own and I keep the name?
So if there's some default forEach that the browser natively understands, and then I have a function in my lib that has the same name, does mine take precedence over the native one, or not? Is it just safer giving libraries slightly weird names so new in-built functions can't possibly interfere?So also, if later browsers end up implementing the newer Javascript (2?) that as I hear, will implement a getElementsByClassName, would this break, or ignore, everyone's pre-made getElementsByClassName, assuming they are called the same name?

Buenas noches dudes and dudettes,
I'm a total jquery noob, so this is probably very easy for you:
I've got a couple of selectboxes on my page, all with the IDselFunction1,selFunction2 and so on...
I want to create a new select box next to the preexisting selectbox if a certain value is selected, let's say "beaver".
How do i do this?

What makes this easy is I'm trying to replicate an existing website: BT's Personal Site
The menu of Packages / Phone, etc is very nice. Not only does the menu auto scroll, but also reacts to mouseover in a lovely manner (thereafter going back to auto scroll if there is no user input).
I've spent the afternoon going through all of JQuery's plugin library but I couldn't find something similar. I found individual scripts that I could use to mirror the auto rotate, but that meant integrating the rollover wouldn't work. Anyone got ideas on how to implement this?
A pre-existing script would be great if there is one(!) Otherwise, real simple advice as I'm a bit of a noob to jQuery. If there is no pre-existing script or the alterations will take a bit of effort, I'm happy to compensate if there is an expert for hire (depending on rates obviously!)
