Hide Javascript From Downloaded Pages?
Mar 8, 2005
Does anyone know of a handy way to disable a user from downloading javascript when they save a page?
Here is my problem. I have javascript that disables right clicks on a page. However the user could just "save" the page to there desktop and remove the function that disables right clicks.
Anyone know of a good work around? I've heard of other complex ways, but I was looking for a simple solution.

been trying to maintain a memorial website that we had created when my sister passed away. It was hosted somewhere but the person who made it couldn't maintain it anymore, so I downloaded all of the pages and rebuilt it on my linux server. Heres the site:If you poke around on there you will see some pages that have text that says click here for more pictures, like on the growing up page, and the baby pictures page.Thats my problem, the links dont work. The pages were created with Freeway, and alot of javascript in there that I dont understand. I have all of the pictures in the directory , no clue why they wont load?ll post the javascript that I think is the problem:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html><head><title>Baby Pictures</title>

I'm just starting to learn jQuery actually.. I downloaded the starterkit, unpacked it and also downloaded the latest jQuery file from this website.. all referenced to with the right path in the file but for some reason it doesn't work! I also tried the link to the jQuery file on Google but still the same problem.. I know the path is right because when I view source and click on the link, the right file opens.
If I click the 'Run Code' button on the homepage here it does what it's supposed to do, just on my own computer nothing works?

This is a function to hide and show div
Code:
function ToggleMaktoba (titleImg){
// the id of the content element from the id of the title element
var contentID = titleImg.id.replace (/title/, "content");
var contentDiv = document.getElementById (contentID);
if (contentDiv.style.display == "none") {
titleImg.src = "images/collapse.gif";
contentDiv.style.display = "block";
} else {
titleImg.src = "images/expand.gif";
contentDiv.style.display = "none";
} return false;
}
The problem that I have is that this div is viewed on every page on the site, so if I hide it I want it to stay hidden even when navigating threw pages. If I choose to hide it, it stays hidden, and if I chose to show it, it stays shown.

I want to redirect all pages from one website to another. They will be permanent redirects, but I am looking for a way to make it look cool.
Is it possible (It does not HAVE to be a 301 redirect) that when someone goes to a page on the old website, they automatically go to the new website with a message explaining the transfer, and everything around the message goes grayscale until the user clicks ok...?

I have some wordpress code which generates a menu with links to the pages created in the admin area.
[Code]...
The id of active is on the currently selected menu item. In the above code the home page. How can I get the subnav to show only if the main menu item which contains a subnav is active? The rest of the time I want the subnav hidden. I have found the effect I want on another site [URK]. If you select advanced treatments a sub menu appears. If you select say jobs then the subnav for advanced treatments disappears.

I'm not sure what this is called, I think it's remote script execution, but I could be wrong, so bear with me.
I have a call that I make for an adserver:
<script src="http://www...."></script>
That populates the page at that point with some text. When it works, it works great, the text comes back, and everything is good. However, when the remote server does not return right away, or maybe the connection is down, my page hangs on it.
So my question is, is there a way to structure the call on my end so that my page continues loading even if this call doesn't return?

We are downloading a few thousand rows of data for users to choose from
and need to speed up the operation. The data is related in four levels.
The current design allows the user to select the first level from about
20 choices and then the next level's choices are retrieved from the
server. This is taking about 4 seconds. We are required to make it
faster.
We need to be able to download all the data once and save it for use
any time this particular page is visited. The app is a support app and
the page will be used throughout the day. The obvious idea is to cache
it in a Java applet but we are not allowed to use applets. The other
idea is to embed it in JavaScript arrays but we have tried this and the
performance penalty is about the same and will be incurred on other
lookups on the page becuase the page reloads for these other lookups
(we are using WebLogic netui).
What we need is a cookie that is not submitted unless the page
explicitly sends it; that is, some data needs to be downloaded once per
session and remain in the browser memory/on the disk throughout the
session. It would be nice if we could write to a temp file or access a
heap - can we? Any ideas?

Has anyone tried sending web pages containing javascript to another user
also using Outlook Express?
Mine don't work on the other end - although I'm not sure if this is because
they don't have Javascript enabled in MS Explorer 6. I save the entire HTML file + script into my Stationery folder. Then I select Message/New Message Using [select stationery file]. Should it work? Say I sent this by email:
<html>
<head>
<script>
alert("Hi there!");
</script>
</head>
<body>
<p>Can you see the alert box? Let me know.</p>
</body>

I am working on implementing a carousel-style switcher (using a pre-built script dependent on the MooTools library) on the home page of one of my Web sites. The script displays a series of thumbnail images. When the user clicks on one of those thumbnails, an AJAX request returns the following items, which are then switched out using javascript:A background image (usually between 50 and 100 kilobytes)A foreground image (usually between 10 and 20 kilobytes)A header for the promotional item (strictly text)The body text of the promotional item (text and HTML code, generally no more than 200 characters of text)I have all of that working properly.
When the user clicks on the thumbnail, the AJAX function executes. Then, I use javascript to invoke a new Image() object to load the background image. Once that's completed, I invoke another Image() object to load the foreground image. Once both requests are fully loaded, I switch out the information. While they are working, I display an animated gif that indicates the information is loading. However, if at all possible, I would like to implement a progress indicator rather than just a simple animated gif. Because of the size of the background images, it can sometimes take between 10 and 15 seconds to load on a dial-up connection (even longer if the user's connection is especially slow or overloaded).
That's a long time to sit and stare at a "loading" image, especially if there's no way to indicate whether it's going to actually do anything or if it's just completely stalled. I am already sending the filesize of the background image and the foreground image to my javascript using the AJAX request, so if I need to use that somewhere in my script, I can easily do that. However, I've hit a roadblock in trying to figure out if there's a way to determine how much the user has actually downloaded successfully. From most of my research, it does not seem possible (due to security issues) to determine any sort of file size on the user's local computer using javascript.
However, the majority of the information I've found on the subject seems to relate to the opposite type of situation (users uploading files rather than downloading). The few examples I've been able to find for "download indicators" seem to simply count the total number of images being loaded, then divide 100 by that count. Then, for each image that loads, it adds that percentage to the indicator. Since I will always be loading two images, that means that my download indicator would always display 0%, 50% or 100%, which isn't much more helpful than the animated "loading" gif I'm already using. Is there any way to use javascript to determine how much (percentage-wise or in bytes) of a file a user has downloaded from the server into their cache?

is there a way to check if a picture has downloaded completely?
What I (read: my boss) want to do is open the index-page with a picture, and after it's downloaded, reload the website to index2.php after say 4 seconds.
Is it enough to do an OnLoad in the body tag, or doesn't that include the downloading of the items/pictures on the page?

It would be nice to be able to sort plugins by the number of times voted on. I know you can see how many times it has been voted on after you go to the detail page but it would be helpful to get that info as a sort field on the "Most Popular Plugins" page because then you could tell wether a 5 star has been voted on once or a 1000 times. I personally would rather get a 3 1/2 starred plugin voted on 1000 times then a 5 star voted on once by the developer. Don't get me wrong I would vote 5 stars on my plugin too.

I'm looking for a small javascript that you can use to cloak your urls when people hoover over it. In stead of the actual destination, I'd like to enter a custom made text when people hoover over them. Any suggestions where to find such a script? I checked several script sites but wasn't able to find the script I was looking for.

Just curious, what techniques does gmail leverage to hide the

I have no interest (you have to trust me on this one) of hacking it or

I have a php page with a drop down list, and the default selected
option is "Select a location" (without quotes).
Using the drop down initiates a database query. One of (3) things
should happen:
1. If an option is selected for which results are available, they
should be displayed on the same page beneath the drop down list in a
table.
2. If an option is selected for which results are NOT available, a
message should be displayed informing the visitor that there were no
results for that query.
3. If the default selected option has not yet been changed (ie: when
the page first loads), no message should display.
#1 and #2 work, but the message described in #2 is still displayed when
the page first loads before the default selected option is changed (#3)
but in Internet Explorer only. Firefox displays the page correctly
under all three conditions.
The message that I want hidden on page load is wrapped in a div named
"infobox" and I'm using the following script to hide it which is at the
bottom of the page:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function ClearDiv()
{
if
(document.form2.name.options[document.form2.name.selectedIndex].value=="Select
a location")
{
document.getElementById("infobox").style.display =
"none";
}
}
ClearDiv();
</script>
I've also included the php code that writes out the message and the
table below....

I do not understand javascript at all. For about eight years I've had a UDM javascript menu on each of about 200 pages. It consists of a bunch of files that live in the top of my website and are called to each page by four lines of script. I have had only to edit appearance and links in one file. Instructions were to leave the others alone.
The present version of the UDM menu is not free, as the old one was, and if I did buy it I'm not at all sure I'd be able to cope with it. Unless the names of the new files matched those of the old ones, I'd have to go in and edit each page individually.
My problem is that IE9 doesn't display the menu, but does display its background, so there's a big beige block on the top left of every page. It looks bad.
Would I be able to add to one of the files something like a conditional comment such as "If IE9 display none"?
