Function That Compares 2 Alpha-numeric Values?

Jul 23, 2005

Does anyone have a code snippet to compare those values so I can sort
the array of alpha-numeric values that include both characters and
integers in it?

I.e., if we have values like 4236 and 123234, I want 4236 to be second
because 4 is bigger than 1 rather than using the numeric comparison.
The strings can include character values and strings. Basically, I have
the bubble sort function, the question is how to compare those types of
strings in the alpha-numeric order.

i.e.,

A83745
B34974
127734
34456
788

I looked all over the web thinking that this simple question would be
answered somewhere, but could not find the answer.

Function - Compares Two Strings And Then Shows Or Hides A Div Depending On Results Of Comparison

Oct 8, 2011

I have been on this for over an hours now, it is probably something simple and/or stupid, but why doesn't this script work? I have read forums til my eyes are crossed and can't see what I am doing wrong I am new to javascript, but not programming. The point here is to create a function that compares two strings and then shows or hides a div depending on the results of the comparison. I was trying to pass in the name of the two input text boxes containing the text and the name of the div to show or hide (so that it can be used in multiple scenariios.) Right now my error message is that document.getElementById(field1).value is not a function.

Here is the code below..

Correct Parsing Of Strings For Numeric Values

Feb 12, 2009

I'm currently working on a web page that's acting much like a spreadsheet. There are fields that the user must fill in and then certain columns of fields add up to a sum at the bottom. I haven't been able to get it working quite right.

Here is the essence of the code
Code:
<form name="drillreport" method="post" action="process_report.php">
<table><tr>
<td> Field 1 </td>
<td> <input type="text" name="field1" id="field1" onBlur= calcTotal() /> </td>
</tr><tr><td> Field 2 </td>
<td> <input type="text" name="field2" id="field2" onBlur= calcTotal() /> </td>
</tr><tr><td> Field 3 </td>
<td> <input type="text" name="field3" id="field3" onBlur= calcTotal() /> </td>
</tr><tr><td> Total </td>
<td> <input type="text" name="tot_col" id="tot_col" onFocus= calcTotal() /> </td>
</tr></table>
...
It is more than that of course, but you get the idea.

The function I wrote is the following:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
function calcTotal() {
var returned_val=0;
returned_val += parseFloat(document.drillreport.field1.value);
returned_val += parseFloat(document.drillreport.field2.value);
returned_val += parseFloat(document.drillreport.field3.value);
document.drillreport.tot_col.value = returned_val;
}
</script>

I use the onBlur for each of the "component fields" so that if the user changes one of the fields, it updates the total. However, I can't get this to return values properly when just field1 is entered ( NaN ) comes up. As soon as I enter the second column the total appears fine. Why wont this work if you just enter the first field?

Validation - Compare Two Textfield Values (numeric) And Warn When One Is Larger?

Feb 18, 2010

I'm struggling to get what I want to work..I have two textfields (using jquery to ensure digits only, limit 3) one is total_available one is currently_available

obviously you cannot have more things available than you have in total, so i need to compare them, and warn when the second one is larger than the first. I tried to modify the jquery validation equalTo with no luck.

i actualy dont care it its not, if i can get the values from the fields, convert them to INT, then compare, and change the innerHTML of a warning DIV that is next to the fields to say "check again" then it will be sorted.

JQuery :: Form Functionality That Compares Value Submitted To Hidden Fields

Jun 21, 2010

I have a form I'm going to present to visitors. The goal is that when a visitor enters a Zip Code, for the form to compare that Zip Code submitted to Zip Codes that I'll hide in the form. I'm not sure if it's better to have the hidden zip code values as comma separated or just let them have their own individual hidden input fields. When the form is submitted, I need it to check and find out if the submitted zip code matches any of the hidden zip codes. If any of the hidden values match the submitted value, I want to be able to have a hidden div be shown, but if the form is submitted and there are no zip codes that match, show another div.

Something like this:

JQuery :: FadeIn() On Elements With Alpha Filter Not Working Properly In IE

Jun 2, 2009

I am running into an effect issue with IE only. I have a <UL> with about 4 <LI> and I apply the fadeIn() on individual <LI> based on user actions. Inside of each <LI> I have a div that is styled with: -moz-opacity:.8; opacity:0.80; filter:alpha(opacity=80); The problem is that when I fadeIn() the <LI> all of its children elements' opacity is taken from 0 to 100%, AND THEN the div that is styled with the opacity is taken back to 80%. This causes sort of a flicker because it goes from 0% to 100% and then quickly back to 80%. Is there a way to get around this? Is that a known bug? I saw some people that had posted similar questions but without answers: [URL] I am pressed for time to deliver a page and this is virtually the only issue holding me back! additional info: using: jquery-1.3.2.min.js

Numeric Date Validation

Jul 23, 2005

It has appeared that ancient sources give a method for Numeric Date
Validation that involves numerous tests to determine month length;
versions are often posted by incomers here. That sort of code seems
unnecessarily long.

For some while, the following approach has been given here :-

function ValidDate(y, m, d) { // m = 0..11 ; y m d integers, y!=0
with (new Date(y, m, d))
return (getMonth()==m && getDate()==d) }

and it may remain the shortest code. But it does require, in every
case, the creation and disposal of a Date Object.

The following is about 50% longer in code, but about four times faster
in my system - and it seems to be right, too.

function DateOK(Y, M, D) {
return D>0 && (D<=[,31,28,31,30,31,30,31,31,30,31,30,31][M] ||
D==29 && M==2 && Y%4==0 && (Y%100>0 || Y%400==0) ) }

Note that checking for 1 <= M <= 12 is inherent, and that the Leapness
of the year is only determined if the date given is February 29th.

Also, it is easy to use only the quadrennial rule if it is certain that
dates are in 1901-2099, or only two rules for 2001-2399.

Possible To Pass Values Through Function

Apr 12, 2010

I was wondering if I can pass my php variables through javascript function. Actually i have a simple table of pictures, when clicked in the picture a new popup page comes up, it working fine uptill this stage but now I want to pass a value through it, for instance if user clicks on picture1 then my popup url should be "item_large.php?id=pic1.

My Javascript junction for the popup window:
function popup() {
window.open("item_large.php","Register","menubar=no,width=500,height=400,toolbar=no");
}

My Html code where I have my pictures:
<td height="19" align="center" valign="top" onmouseover="this.bgColor='#CC3300' ; this.style.cursor='pointer'" onmouseout="this.bgColor='#FFFFFF'" <A HREF="javascript:popup()">Picture01</A> </td>

Default Function Values

Aug 5, 2005

is there a way in javascript to provide default values for function variables.. for instance

In my case the problem is this, i have tables on about 10 pages that all use the same type of table that have checkboxes next to each row, indicating each row could be possibly edited or deleted. Now, i have a function to check/uncheck all by clicking the top box in the column. It works fine, but on one page, i actually have two of these tables. This screws it up though as it will check everything in the first table when i click the select all input box on the second table. I was hoping i could simply change the value for the id of the table and then pass that id instead of passing nothing.

in php it would look like this
function my_function($default_value = "hello") {

in javascript i dont know if this is possible though, it threw errors when i tried syntax similar to that.

Getting Values From PHP Variables To Use In Function?

May 2, 2010

urrently I have the user log in, choose their character, and then go to a page where they can fight random monsters. When they get to the page to fight with the random monsters, the character's information as well as the random monster's information is pulled from tables in my database.

What I would like to do is when the user clicks the Attack button, perform a function that takes the monster's hp ($hp) and subtracts from it the character's attack combat value ($acv1).

how I can access the php variables within my JavaScript code and how I can go about doing this type of calculation?

I'd like to store the monster's hp in a javascript variable, so that when the character attacks, the hp can be updated until the character has reduced the monster's hp to zero, in which case a php script should be run that updates the character's table.
