"Force" Download With User Approval?
Nov 1, 2011
We have links on our website that point directly to Excel spreadsheet files on our server. When the user clicks a link, It will display a dialog, asking if the user wants to Open or Save the file (standard browser procedure). I want to provide the same functionality, but with a dynamically created file.
For example, instead of a link, the screen will have a button. If the user clicks the button, a CSV file will be created and stored on the server. I then want to be able to immediately "download" that file, as if it were a link on the page and the user clicked it. So, they would then be shown the Open/Save dialog to give them the option to view or download the file.

I have a PHP application that allows users to generate a .pdf report of
their database content. Normally, I've had to refresh a page to call
the script to generate the report, so there's a second or so when the
browser goes blank. I was wondering if it was possible to use AJAX to
call the script to generate the report, then begin the download without
refreshing the page (or in the case of I.E., leaving me with a blank
window that you have to back out of).
The following code 'works', in that it inserts the pdf code in the
textarea, but I'd want to force the browser to start a file download
without refreshing the page.
BTW, I'm using the Prototype 1.3.1 library.
<script>
function searchSales(rptID)
{
//generates the report
var url = 'http://192.168.1.128/sendReport.php'
var pars = 'rptID=' + rptID;
var myAjax = new Ajax.Request( url, {method: 'get', parameters: pars,
onComplete: showResponse} );
}
function showResponse(originalRequest)
{
//put returned XML in the textarea
$('result').value = originalRequest.responseText;
}
</script>
<a href="#" onclick="javascript:searchSales(')">Click</a>
<textarea id=result cols=60 rows=10 ></textarea>

I'm using a little javascript to help my site's design to fit the visitor's entire browser window.
Everything works great apart from one problem. If a visitor first loads the page and the browser isn't maximised, the page loads correctly BUT if the visitor then proceeds to maximize the browser, the page is still set for the minimised browser. This condition stays until the visitor goes to another section of the site or refreshes the page. When this happens, the page again loads correctly.
I would like to force a page reload whenever the browser is minimizedmaximized or is in any other way changed size. How can I do this?

I'm buildning a permissions system. If the database check shows that the user doesn't have access to the PHP script she tries to access, I want to diplay an alert window telling her so. And when she presses the "OK"-button, I want the browser to send here back to the previous page that she came from.
Is this a javascript problem? Is there a quick and dirty solution?

I'm trying to write a shopping basket in ASP and I need to force the user to choose one or more "Option" radio button(s) before allowing the form to submit.
For example:
<input type="radio" name="option1" value="1">Red
<input type="radio" name="option1" value="2">Blue
<input type="radio" name="option1" value="3">Green
<input type="radio" name="option2" value="1">Small
<input type="radio" name="option2" value="2">Medium
<input type="radio" name="option2" value="3">Large
I want the user to HAVE to choose a colour and size from the above options before the form will submit or else they will get a Javascript popup message asking them to make a choice. (There may also be more/less options so it needs to be dynamic)
I know ASP inside out but very little knowledge of Javascript so once i have the basics of how to do it I can make the code dynamic. There will be a maximum of 5 "Options" for a product and a maximum of 6 choices for each Option.

e.g.
10 is Invalid
10.00 is Valid
My current code is below. Can someone explain what I need to do to ensure that the user enters a number including two trailing decimal places please?

I have a form with a password the user must enter. The password has no conditions, but there is a checkbox next to it. Users have an option to choose one of two checkboxes. If they choose the checkbox with the password then the password is required, the other checkbox does not require a password so the form would not need to validate the password in that instance.

I need to have a submit input button automatically start a download when clicked, but also redirect to an additional "information" page. Since I'm not sure if this can simply be solved with HTML or must use some Javascript.

I am trying to get started using JQuery, but I find I can't even get to lesson #1. When I go to jquery.com and click to download the latest version (or any version) it doesn't "download" anything. It opens the file as a webpage in my browser and I see all the JQuery in one big string. Why won't the file just download? Is it the browser I am using? Is it my Mac?

I want to display HTML text inside a div and have the page open scrolled to the bottom. (My div has overflow:auto so that it appears with scroll bars)
I have found this that works on a textarea:
document.all.MyDivId.scrollTop = document.all.MyDivId].scrollHeight;
But this doesn't work on a div. I am using a div because the text I am displaying contains HTML. Surely it is possible to simply set a scroll bar to the bottom in a div?

is there anyway to force an event, like mouseover? I have a page that
loads, and due to some complex js code (not mine) it fails to write
labels to tabs until the user does a mouseover on the tabs. the page
load event happens beforre the tabs are loaded. Once the user
mouseovers the tabs, the labels of the tabs appear, and stay there. it
is irritating. i would like to force a mouseover so the tab names
appear.

I have been writing a practice sliding div navigation script. I am finding
myself in the position where I need to force a div into showing the hover
behavior defined in css.
So my question is this. If I have two divs, is there a way to make the
second div display its onmouseover behavior when the mouse is over div 1?

I have a script that parses window.location.hash to figure out which xml
file to load. The xml files populate a page on a framed site. The code works
correctly to a point.
If I have a seperate html page to support each xml it works. I would like to
eliminate the individual html pages becuase only one should be needed.
When I use one page the first link works, then the second one does nothing
(doesn't refresh the frame). If I click to a static image for the frame then
click the next xml link it works.
What can I do to force the frame to update? I am clicking on a HREF link
that should re-load the html page, but with the new xml data.

I am a complete JS newbie. I am trying to make one radio button assume a certain value when another one in a different group is clicked. This is a conference registration form for which most applicants will pay, but some do not. It is passing form data to a ColdFusion backend, and
I simply wish to havethe non-paying applicants have the no-pay "payment type" automatically selected when they select the no-pay registration type. I have tried the following with no success (in IE 6.0; I want to test it here first)
<script language="JavaScript" TYPE="text/javascript">
function forceCompPay() {
if (document.forms[1].groupType == "speaker") {
document.forms[1].groupPayment[comp].checked = true
}
}
</script>
</head>
the "master" button is:
<cfinput type="radio" name="type" value="speaker"
onClick="forceCompPay()">Speaker

I have a div with a scroll bar. It contains various child divs, and when the user sees them, they are in vertical order. So he can scroll to whatever child div he wants to. Then he can click on an arrow, and the entire child div expands to reveal a lot of text. This all works. But I'd also like to make the child div scroll up to the top of the parent div. Otherwise, it could happen that the user clicks on a child div that is near the bottom of the screen, and it expands, but most of the content is below the screen, which means he has to use the browser's own scrollbar to see the rest. I know that javascript has a 'scrollby' function, butI wouldn't know how much to scroll it, and I also want to use a jquery selector to identify the child div.

Is there a way to force a popup window to always be on top?
Generally, I object to this when surfing the web, I associate it with spam.
But in this case it is for a browser based application where the behavior is desirable.
Is it possible with JS?

I want to enforce a click on the facebook share button.
I was thinking something like this:
javascript:window.location="http://www.facebook.com/connect/prompt_feed.php?locale=en_US&message=hi"; javascript:function selectFirst() { publish.focus(); publish.click();} selectFirst();
Something wrong with that code? What code would work? Is it not possible?

At my job we have computers that are set up with restricted rights. Firefox 2 is the default browser (good call), but for some reason a site that the user has to visit is IE only (yeah, wtf).
We have a webpage open with a link to that IE only site, now is there a way to open that link in IE from FF? We have full control over these machines, so we could install batch software or whatever it would take.
