Does A Form Element Know Its Own Index Number In The Forms[].elements[] Array
Aug 24, 2010
I have a form element that looks like this:
<input type="text" onchange=doSomething(this)>
and a function:
function doSomething(theField){
}
I know that within the function I can access properties of the field (e.g. theField.name and theField.value). But how do I access theField's index number in the form's elements[] array -- from the "this" reference that was passed to the function? I.E. if this field is elements[3], how can I get at that 3?

I have two forms with identically named arrays on each. I need to copy the values to the second form's array. Here's a simplified version of the HTML:
<form name="mainform">
<input type="text" size="10" name=firstnames[] value="Joe"/>
<input type="text" size="10" name=firstnames[] value="Bob"/>
<input type="text" size="10" name=firstnames[] value="Pat"/>
[Code]....
I'd like to be able to submit hiddenform with the firstnames array equal to ['Joe', 'Bob', 'Pat']. But I seem to be getting an awful lot of ['', '', ''] no matter how I go about it.

I'm working on an exercise I need to have finished pretty soon. The concept is simple: online bookstore with cart etc. It's written on php, using JS and mysql.
Each time I view a book's details, I can add it to my cart, where I can also alter it's quantity.
The code for my cart is this:
PHP Code:
As you can see, each time I choose a book to add it to my cart, a new span will be created, to hold the info of this book. What I need to do with the ManageItem js function, is to update the total cost at the bottom of the page, but I can't seem to be getting anywhere.
Here is what I've done so far:
Code:

I'm trying to determine a better method of finding the index value of a form element. I need to find it because the JavaScript validation class has a function for validating a single form element, but it requires that the index number of the element in the form be passed in.Currently I am accomplishing this by a function that I wrote which I call for each field I want to validate:
function getIndex(element)
{
for (var i=0; i<document.thisForm.elements.length; i++)

I am creating a form to enable advertisers to create listings on an accommodation directory site.One of the form fields is a drop down with the following optionshotelguestHouseselfCateringinnholidayParkcampingThe top part of my form is the same for all these accommodation types. However I need to include a section specific to the accommodation type. This section will include groups of radio buttons and checkboxes allowing the advertiser to choose which facilities/amenities are available.For exampleA hotel may have 24 room service campsite may have a shop on siteI was planning to have a separate div for each of the accommodation specific sections and toggling the display based on the choice of the accommodation type from a drop down list.I have just had a horrible thought that it may be possible if javascript was not enabled that either none of the sections would be displayed or even worse all of them at once.

I have been using dynamic divs with changing z-index's to show content on my screen.
Everything was working fine until I tried to hide a form underneath a picture using z-index. The hiding of the form worked well until I included a "select" option. This would always stay on top, even though the division it was included in had gone to z-index:-1. The picture is at z-index:0.
Any ideas on why this happens?
Is "visibility:hidden|visible" cross browser? The select option does go invisisble along with the rest of the div when I use this method.

Is there a way to retrieve the DOM element number in a form? For instance if I had 5 checkboxes with the same name and an event was fired to gather data, could I determine the DOM element number for each checkbox checked? I know this may seem like meaningless information, but I need it to do some other work on the page.

I am creating an array based on form elements. I then am trying to create an IF (and nested IF) statement to check if the fields are empty and then with the nested IF statement use certain fields to create mathematical functions.
So far I have this:
function QuantityMWh(form) {
var formchk = document.forms[0]
for (i = 0; i < formchk.elements.length; i++) {
if (formchk.elements[1].value == "" && formchk.elements[2].value == "") {
[Code]....
It's only checking the first field and not the second, and vice versa. i.e. if only one field has text then it passes.

I have a form that has an array of input values:
I do this so I can loop through the values in php... now...that's the easy part... the hard part comes to this:
Next to each of those boxes is a search button that allows the user to open up a popup window that they can search for an item, and select the item. Once they select the item it should populate that particular input box with the selected item. I can easily do this with a uniquely named input box, but can't seem to figure out how to do it with an array of input boxes...

I use a very handy function (onsubmit) to validate empty fields in a form:
PHP Code:
function validate_form(){
var x = document.getElementById("form1");
for(var i=0; i<x.length; i++){
if((x.elements[i].value == "") && (x.elements[i].title)){
[Code]....
It worked like a charm, until I had to change a dropdown dynamically with ajax. I have two dropdowns, the second being populated with ajax (php, mysql) by the option selected in the first one. The second dropdown has the title attribute filled so the previous function can validate and ask the user to select something. However, it seems like fields loaded dynamically with ajax wont appear inside the x.elements[] array. I've tested it over and over, it keeps ignoring it. It isn't even in the array. Why?

I'm trying to add the text of a textarea form to the string that's contained at:
myarray[a][b][c]
It was easy to pull out the value of the textarea with this:
textinput = $('#mytextarea').val();
But then when I try to add the variable into the array, it doesn't work. I'm not able (apparently) to do this. Fingers crossed that I'm doing something dumb?
This doesn't work:
myarray[a][b][c] += newstringvariable;
Nor this:
myarray[a][b][c] = myarray[a][b][c] + textinput;
I'm guessing there is a very simple (probably syntax related!) solution to this. I'm open to doing this via jQuery or regular javascript.

Having a form like this:
HTML Code:
when I capture the dispatch of the form and try to get the value of any of these file fields:
PHP Code:
There's a Javascript error saying that form.file is undefined. It's strange because I see in Firebug that "file" actually exists as a property of "form". The same happens if I get rid of the temporary variable "form" and I do it this way:
So, I eventually had to use the getElementById('image' + i) method in order to do what I wanted. But there must be a "natural" way to get a value from an array defined in a form.
