Best Way To Store Data In HTML Elements

Sep 30, 2011

I've gone back and forth on the best way to store data in HTML elements which is used to support JavaScript. For instance, I might have a bunch of rows each associated with a SQL ID, and upon clicking the delete element, want to grab the id, and send it to the server. I've successfully used the following three solutions, but would like to standardize on just the best.

Option 1 is technically valid, but seems excessive. Option 2 will work fine, but is considered by some as bad practice. Option 3 requires the extra step of splitting the ID from some identifier string, and care not to have the same record twice on the page.

JQuery :: Parse Returned Data And Populate HTML Form Elements

Jun 1, 2011

I am developing a web application in java (jsp's and servlets). For the project I am working on I will need to develop an html data entry screen and the code to load data into the screen, and then save the data back to the back-end database.

How to do the following:
Read the data out of the database (JDBC, no problem) in a servlet.
Put the data into the appropriate form for returning to the data entry screen, which will be a jsp. (Is JSON the right choice for passing the data from the servlet to the jsp?)

In the jsp, parse the returned data and populate the HTML form elements (text fields and combo boxes). When a button is clicked, pull the data out of the form elements and return to a servlet for saving back in the database.

Alternate Way To Store/get XML Data ?

Mar 21, 2011

I have a project that I need to read some data from an XML file.

Something like:

However, since JS is a client side script so it can't read from client side, is there any alternate way to do this? I am thinking to create a "Data" class, and many "Data" objects, is this an elegant way to do it?

JQuery :: Using Table As Data Store

Jan 25, 2010

My table is a data table, and I'm contemplating using it as the data store as well, rather than keep a js array of data separately. The cell values are retrieved by ajax, then inserted into the table. I'm thinking that the duplication of data (once in the js array, once in the table) is likely to lead to strange results somewhere along the line, where the two data sets get out of synch. It seems to me that jquery makes using a table in this way rather simple (I refer to the jquery selectors in particular). The table includes some editable-in-place columns.

If any such edits, and user presses a Save button above the table, the save function finds the edited fields and sends an appropriate ajax call, then refreshes the table with the outcome (eg it worked, so new values remain shown, it didn't work, revert, or something like that, it's not too important here). Hence the need to maintain some 'awareness' of the values in the cells. I'm content with using attributes as needed to support this (e.g., to be able to revert to original value, to mark cells that have been edited). Table may contain up to 500 rows, ten columns. How it compares with keeping the data in a js array?

Using LocalStorage To Store A Large Amount Of Data - > 5mb

Dec 13, 2011

I've been using localStorage to store a large amount of data (> 5mb). I know that most browsers limit localStorage to 5mb. However, on the specification site it states,

Quote:

User agents may prompt the user when quotas are reached, allowing the user to grant a site more space. This enables sites to store many user-created documents on the user's computer, for instance.

Is this available yet? If so, how would I use it?

Store HTML In XML File And Display With AJAX

Sep 16, 2005

I want to store the main content of my site (with it's HTML) in an XML file such as:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<root>
<data>
<h3>Hello World</h3>
<p>Here is some content, blah...</p>
<p>Yet another paragraph</p>
</data>
<data>
<h3>Section 2</h3>
<p>More stuff to read</p>
</data>
</root>

And I want to load all the HTML in a data node via an onclick event. I've got the following basic AJAX code:

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
function ajaxRead(file,node) {
var xmlObj = null;

if(window.XMLHttpRequest) {
xmlObj = new XMLHttpRequest();
} else if (window.ActiveXObject) {
xmlObj = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
} else {
return;
}

xmlObj. {
if(xmlObj.readyState == 4) {

var parentNode;
parentNode = xmlObj.responseXML.getElementsByTagName('data')[node]

updateObj('xmlObj', parentNode.firstChild.data);
}}

xmlObj.open ('GET', file, true);
xmlObj.send ('');
}

function updateObj(obj, data) {
document.getElementById(obj).innerHTML = data;
}
//-->
</script>

If I remove the HTML tags within the data node it works, but obviously there is no formatting, and its just all text. How can I load the HTML content into the div? Note: 'xmlObj' is the name of the div I'm trying to populate.

Grab The HTML From A .NET Panel - Div - And Make The Changes And Store Them In A Textbox

Mar 21, 2011

I have written the code below. What it is supposed to do, is grab the HTML from a .NET panel (div) and make the changes and store them in a textbox, so that when the page is posted, the values are retained and can be re-read back to the .NET panel. I have found this script works in IE but doesn't work in FF. Now I know it is something I am doing wrong, but I can not work out what it is.

Code:

I have checked my syntax and I am sure it is correct. The only thing I can see that might be causing the problem is that I set final as the original and then I get the list of inputs.

From there I loop through and set the value of the inputs to the new values.

If I do an alert, the value shows what I would expect, but setting the store value as the final innerHTML doesn't appear to keep these values.

Could it be that once I pull the inputs from the final (placeholder = final.getElementsByTagName("input");) then changes I make to them do not affect the final variable?

Store A Long String Of Text Into A Local Storage Member On A Browser - Character Data Sizes In JS

Oct 16, 2009

Lets say I wanted store a long string of text into a local storage member on a browser using javascript.

window.localStorage.setItem("key",longStringText);

Now lets assume that the text itself contains characters outside of the normal ISO-8859-1 character set (like asian or russian characters). Would the individual char values be stored as one byte or two bytes?

"hello" -> 5 * 1 bytes = 5 (normal 8859 character sets)
"hello" -> 5 * 2 bytes = 10 (unicode or an extended character set size).

Is ISO-8859-1 still stored like ASCII once was as 8 bits? Or is it 16? If I was to use a 2 byte character set then would that cut the size of my allocated local storage space by half?

Converting HTML Elements Stored Within XML To Usage Js Elements?

Jun 3, 2010

I have HTML tags stored in XML. I want to be able to use these HTML elements with Javascript, just as you can with elements in document.body. How can it be done? (And don't try and tell me I should use server-side because I have written it all for Javascript and the project is nearly complete minus this and there are practical reasons for not doing this server-side. After all, anything is possible with Javascript!)

Let me explain:

- I have HTML templates such as this [URL]

- I want javascript to populate these templates then add them to my page

- The only way I know javascript can get this kind of data is by parsing XML

- I want to parse the XML then be able to use the HTML elements just like those in document.body

- As far as I'm aware, XML is the only good way of storing data for javascript. I don't want to store it in javascript variables (too much multiline data with " and '). Nor do I want to build it using document.createElement("div")... etc

As someone not yet with any experience in computer science etc, please ignore my poor terminology! However, I'm not a beginner when it comes to javascript.

Here's the script concerned but I doubt it'll help you understand my problem: [URL]

JQuery :: Load Html And Loop Through Json While Changing Html With Json Data?

Sep 11, 2010

I have a html file that I want to load, loop through the json data and for each json entry I want to add a new block of the html and insert the json data into the matching div/class of the html. json looks like this:

{"Super" : [{"Name" : "John Doe", "Age" : "30"}, {"Name" : "Jane Doe", "Age" : "40"}]};
html looks like this:
<div class="Name"></div><div class="Age"></div>

So for each json entry of name/age, I want to insert that into the html, and then add another row, until all json data has been fetched. After this I want to insert all of this into #box, which is just a divthat should contain that html. Looping like this obviously does not work, since I just keep replacing the same html through the loop.

var jsonData = {"Super" : [{"Name" : "John Doe", "Age" : "30"}, {"Name" : "Jane Doe", "Age" : "40"}]};
$.each(json.Super, function() {
$('#box .Name').html(this.Name);
$('#box .Age).html(this.Age);
});
