Ajax :: Check New Entries In Database And Send Response?
Apr 5, 2011
I have a simple AJAX chat room and it's taking too much local bandwidth when it downloads. What I want to do is call a page with AJAX that checks for new entries in the database and sends a response if there are new ones. But if there's nothing new it just doesn't respond. That way a user won't have to download a response with no new material. Is this okay to do? Am I correct in assuming this will have a positive affect on bandwidth?

I would like to send my form data to a php file but not to get any response. I want to send an ID so that PHP can do MySQL search and generate a PDF file. Problem seems to be that PHP is responding something back to HTML and that is messing my code. So I just want to send the data and run the scripit in PHP so that nothing is returned back to HTML.

i am trying to create a form that where the page will not refresh if the form is submitted specially if the user inputs any errors in the form my problem is i do not know how to send multiple variables using jquery to a php file i saw somewhere that in order to do this you need to concatenate the variables you will be sending this is the code i am using
<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
#add(display: none;}
[code]....
the jquery successfully sends the variable to the php file the problem is once i insert it into a database all the variables i sent are concatenated for example in the column stud_no once you send the form this is what will be inserted "123123name=asdasd"

I too have a problem with Ajax POST method and Send. I have set up a Site Search using the Google Ajax Search API, and it works fine. The search term is stored in the variable (?) query. Just to make sure, I have set up a new variable (searchTerm) to read the value of query, and a temporary Alert box shows that this variable does indeed contain the search term.
I want to store the search terms in a database so I can see what people are searching for. So I set up a POST method to send the searchTerm to a php file, which uses if (isset($_POST['searchTerm'])) to obtain the searchTerm and then insert it into a MYSQL database. But it doesn't work.
When I couldn't insert into the database, I added a second (temporary) insert using a dummy value as the else part of the above if statement, to test (1) if the Ajax file was actually setting the php file going, and (2) to check my Insert code was working. Both work.
So the problem is clearly that either the Ajax code doesn't Send correctly, or the php isn't receiving it. I am stumped to find what is wrong. Here are the two relevant sections of code:

To repeat, the php is running and always loads the dummy variable from the else section, indicating that isset($_POST['searchTerm']) is null.

I'm trying to expand on a tutorial where Jonathan Stark creates a database using JS, CSS, and JQuery. A complete explanation of the code can be found in chapters 4 and 5 here:Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (sets up the HTML).Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (sets up the DB storage).Stark uses a form for the user to enter data, then the attached js file inserts the data into the SQLite database:
HTML Code:
<div id="createEntry">
<div class="toolbar">
<h1>New Setup</h1>
[code]...
how can I redirect the form to a different database script on a different or same page as this database code? I want to have multiple forms going to different tables, and I want the database scripts kept separate. I just don't understand how the form data knows to be inserted into this database. If I duplicate kilo.js, rename it kilo2.js and use different field names, and attach it to the forms page following kilo.js, then kilo.js is ignored and the original form does not work.

I have a function which has two URLs that need to be posted via php onto a database. I had them as individual functions and they work fine but ideally I would like them to be done in the same function. For example, like the following...
if (request !== null){
request.onreadystatechange = loginsuccess; //function to check RS=4 & Status = 200.
request.open("GET", urllogonsubmit, urlrecieveemail,true);
request.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
request.send(null);
}

When I click on a link I have this event:
$.ajax({type: "POST",
url: "/req.php",
asynchronous: false,
dataType: "xml",
[Code]......
The php file check the "op" and call a function that return true (if the query is ok) or false (if the query is not ok). What I have to do to test this value? I mean....jQuery make the sync call, call the php script that run a INSERT query. I need to test in jquery if this QUERY was correctcly lanced. I try with the code above but I can understand that the success parameter is only for the good call of the php script, not for the response.

So I have a new window document write which outputs all my data after validation into a new window, I have tried to write a button which will (when clicked) send that information to an email address. here is my code so far. i spent about 2 hours checking and playing around looking for errors couldnt find any. I think the problem is the function EmailForm and function subwrite. Is a button written into a new window a common thing to do? or is there another simpler way, however i want the user to be able to check to see if there data is valid and then click to send the email.

Some servers return JavaScript as the response to an AJAX request. When
the response JavaScript is eval'ed it calls other JavaScript functions
already in the browser to update elements, etc. This seems like a good
system because it allows so much freedom in creating the desired
behavior in the browser. The required data doesn't have to be converted
to XML or JSON on the server. The browser doesn't have to have
templates for interpreting and converting this data into some change in
the browser. All of the conversion algorithms don't have to be written
and changed when new behavior is required. This remote procedure call
approach is the predominant system in the Ruby on Rails world.
(Unfortunately they are calling Prototype.js functions.)
However apparently some people seem to think this remote procedure call
approach is a bad idea. I can't see why it is so bad because it is so
lightweight and flexible. It also helps to keep the client less
intellegent which seems good in a world of incompatible client-side
bugs.
If I use some neutral data format like XML to accomdate different types
of clients then I have to write different client-side interpreters for
each type of client (browser, RSS, POP, cell phone, etc). Why not just
write different server-side code that generates the correct JavaScript
(or other) for the requesting client type?
When is the RPC approach such a bad idea?

I am using ajax / php where I am looking up some info from the
database and populating a select list dynamically, however I am
running into some sort of size limitation with the ajax.response
object. If the string I am passing to javascript from php is too large
javascript does not get it all the data. The magic number appears to
be 6123 characters, anything below that it works fine, anything above
and if I alert the ajax.response, I see the string is cutoff. Any
ideas where this limitation is defined?

I am using following code
Now what i want to do is: i have a callajax() function. with in this function i will call do_login() function. this do_login() handles an ajaxrequest and returns the responsetext.
Now i want to do some validation on this responsetext(in case of onsuccess). so i am trying to return value to callajax() function for onSuccess case in ajaxrequest.submit();
That is(onsuccess response) supposed to be some string( but not true or false). but i am always getting false in ajaxcall() function. i know the do_login() function is returning false before ajaxrequest completes
So i want to stop this and make do_login wait until ajaxrequest completes and then i want to return it's response to callajax() function.

I'm using $.ajax for an ajax request and I've setup a basic html form and if there are errors in the form when the user submits them my server side script is returning them in an array to the client with the errors.
If there are multiple values in the array, how do I display each error on its own line either using <li> tags or even just a <br/>? I'm injecting the ajax response into a div using .html() but how do I iterate the array within that div so I get one error message per line?
Do I need to construct the HTML on the client side after the ajax response has come back or should I do this on the server side before the data is even returned to the client? Right now I'm returning a raw array so that is why I'm asking the question about how to format things up and get the form errors into my div.
