AJAX :: Auto Div Refresh - Showing Recent Visitors On Profile Page

I am showing recent visitors on profile page.The most recent visitor would be "1 min ago".If suddenly new user comes so i just want to append that user with the message "about a min ago" without refreshing the page.
ex- suppose my recent visitors list ll be like this-
And now smita comes as the recent most visitor i want to append her name in to this list without refreshing the the entire page like this
I know i can do this with AJAX. I have searching around the net for the any helpful resource but didn't get anything yet.
I have a very simple php page that uses shell_exec to get some basic stats for my LAMP. I currently have it setup to where it uses a javascript refresh every 60 seconds, but would like to setup AJAX to have it so it doesnt actually refresh the page. When a user saw that his name is wrong he click on the edit button and shows his name shows in the editable format in the same page(view profile). i mean to say that when we saw our profile in [url] they use this type of edit. or which we saw in naukri.com. i want to apply that type of editting in my site? How will i do this?
I am working on an ASP.NET application that make a lot of jquery and javascript calls and trying to optimize the client side code as much as possible. (This web application is only designed to run on special hardware that has very low memory and processing power.)
The profiler in firebug is great for figuring out what calls are taking up the most time. I have already optimized a lot of my selectors and it is much faster.
However the profile shows a lot of jquery error() calls. In the attached image of the firebug profile window you can see it was called 52 times, accounting for 15.4 of the processing time.
Is that normal for jquery to call its error() like that? My code works flawlessy, and there are no error messages in the firefox error console. It seems like that is a significant performance hit. Is there anyway to get more info on what the errors are?
I ve been trying the following code (see below), this code was posted by tabo here but apparently he left, it works fine on Firefox, Chrome, Safari but I cant get it working on Internet Explorer...I ve been looking everywhere and I dont understand where is the problem. here is the full coding :
I am attempting to create a profile page with PHP utilizing AJAX technologies as well. I need profile data to auto-refresh on the page when a change is made in the database but every 15-30 seconds intervals are fine too. I would really like to use AJAX/PHP for this because I think it will be good for me to know and learn.
I have checked the internet for this and all of the examples show a form select/combobox where you select a "User" and then it populates the information automatically in a div below.
But... I need AJAX or PHP to READ THE VARIABLE FROM THE URL instead of a form(Combobox) and ultimately refresh the data on the page with the results from the DB query in the php file.
I'm using AJAX to auto-refresh a chatroom. You can see it on the right of the following site: http:[url]...
The problem is, when large images are placed in the chatroom via BBCode, (temporarily disabled) when the chatroom refreshes, they flicker! This is caused by the AJAX reloading the content, which in turn reloads the image.Is there a workaround for this? I want to allow images in the chatroom, but I don't want to turn off the auto-refresh. Below is the code I am running to refresh the chatroom:

I am trying to make our buy page reload after clicking the Paypal "continue shopping" button in Paypal Website Standards. The pop up Paypal shopping cart window closes after clicking the button but our buy page doesn't reload. It doesn't reload in Safari although it seems to be fine in FF and IE. how to make the page reload in this specific instance only.
I'm attaching my php test file but this is a JS problem. When I scroll down in the web page and the meta refresh hits, in Windows Safari and IE6/7/8 browsers, the web page re-positions back to the top. In Opera and FF the page refreshes but it stays where it is. Can someone look at my test script and see why it is not working in IE and Win Safari? My goal is to have the web page not re-position to the top on the auto refresh.
Im fairly new to JQuery and need some help. Googling failed me :o have a web page that initially auto refreshes every 30 secs and has a bunch of checkboxes that are initially unchecked. I am trying to make it so that if at least one of those boxes it checked the page stops auto refreshing (without reloading the page, preferably). Is this at all possible? I am using Perl to generate the html.
My auto refresh is in the header, but im open to sticking it somewhere else, as long as it doesnt create crazy memory consumption that i've read about on these forums:<head
I was told that the javascript code to my website needs to be removed in order for my website to be linked to a company's webpage. But I cannot remove the code the company is referring to code...
Does the IT Department at the company's webpage need to add or remove language that will allow my website to link properly? The company is asking me to change my website link but I cannot do that. Is the company uploading my link incorrectly? The company said "The JavaScript for your website is interfering and will not allow us to link your profile to your website."

I have a simple chat on a web page, but It wont refresh itself unless the user refreshes the whole page and I cannot force the page to totally refresh itself cause that would mess up the other things the user can do on the site. So I would need to make the DIV to "load itself again in for example 3sec". I believe this is quite common thing to construct, how to construct this?

I have been using asynchronous requests for a long time. so the response was processed in a callback function. I thought of not using async so i made synchronous requests. The reason is that i dont have to have two more lines for checking the status and the onreadystatechange.... my synchronous requests would be like this...

so from the code you can understand that there is no need of a callback function and if conditions to check ready state... ... So there is no problem in the above code. The problem araises here... if i press the F5 (refresh) key or do a page refresh when the process is waiting for the response i get an (NS ERROR - firefox ( i have not yet checked that in IE browsers) (javascript error) though the process completes successfully. why?
Do we have to check whether the page is navigating away while in synchronous operation and abort the request? or what could be the reason for the error. This will not happen in async requests because that is also the reason for async...
I have a php webpage that has a single input box. When ever an item is entered and the Submit button is pressed, the entry is added to a database. Additionally, the database table contents are read and printed directly below the input box and the submit button on the same page, using AJAX. Now, I have decided to add additional functionality to the page. I want a delete button for each entry displayed in the table below. For any button that is pressed, I want to delete that entry from the database.
Here's the problem: I want the database table contents that has been printed below to reflect this change. I can achieve the delete, but in order to show the change in content caused by the delete, the table below must either be replaced or updated via ajax. How can I achieve this? I've added a scroll script to my site which changes the scroll to just a black box in a grey rectangle. When the page is visited it doesn't show but once you either refresh or navigate through the pages it appears. I'm pretty much clueless about js so don't even know where to start with fixing this. I'm trying to write a custom display for the error messages on my form. Ideally I'd like to use a modal pop-up window to display the errors, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to prevent the validation plugin from automatically displaying the errors on my page AND I can't quite figure out how to access the individual error messages for the elements on my form. What I want to do is to allow users to save invalid forms, but to warn them that they are invalid to make them confirm that they want to save. [code]...
