JQuery: Good For High Traffic Sites?
Nov 1, 2007
The jQuery library is definitely very useful for those who have development background experiences but don't have the time to learn Javascript in it's true nature. I've played with it on and off, on a few smaller sites I manage, and the outcome was truly amazing. I don't know Javascript at all, aside from the basics and I was able to create a very fun and fast UI very quickly for my visitors. I wonder though; Does the jQuery library hold up efficiency for larger sites?
I currently manage a site with over 1.6 million post, averaging around 15,000 post per day this month. With me not having the time to really learn Javascript and I don't have much of a budget to hire someone to do the work I want yet, it would seem logical to use jQuery if I already know how to use it, right? I just worry, with the growth rate for the site at it's all time high, I'm afraid that jQuery will do more bad then good.
Are there any high traffic sites successfully using jQuery that you know about? has anyone experimented with jQuery on their high traffic sites? Would it seems more sensible to hire someone to do the Javascript work?

Are there any good web UI component libraries -open source or commercial - that you can recomment? They need to be cross browser compatible and have good documentation. Jquery UI is very good but limited in number of controls it offers. YUI is very verbose and very hard to use. extJs only other one I can think of. Any others you use and like?

I am implementing a fairly large Javascript file that has many if/than's that decide whether to load new content into div's. I have noticed this is causing high client side CPU utilization. Is there any better way to do this besides having the example script below repeated many times... i need to keep CPU usage down.
Code:
<script>
$(document).ready(function()
{
//ajaxTime.php is called every second to get time from server
[Code]....

I'm working on an interactive website where the user can change the font attributes of the text within the page they're reading. Is there a way to bind, for example, bold tags around a snippet of text the user has high-lighted? What I mean (if that wasn't clear) is if the user is reading through the text on the page and drags their mouse over a piece of text then clicks a button and it turns bold, much like a rich text editor would work, is this possible to do?

With Google Analytics, you have to create a new profile for each domain, and post different code on each domain.
I'd like a traffic stats script (or website) where you can just add the same code for any domain, and that domain will be automatically tracked, even if it's a new domain. So if I have 100 domains and then add the same code to the 101st domain, it will track that domain fine.
Doesn't matter if the script needs to be hosted on your own server, or if it's 3rd party like Google Analytics. It can be commercial too if it's got an unlimited domain license. Anyone know of something like this?

Where I work there are certain dates where nothing can be done, certain times where work can be done with caution, and dates where work can be done. I want to put on the site a traffic light that would change colours based on the calendar dates where work can/can't be done.
For example, if April 11th there is stuff to do, the traffic light would be green. But April 12th, there isn't work to do, it would turn red. Do you know how I would go about doing this?

I have a team website that has several games for entertainment. One
of the games is a javascript version of yahtzee. Can someone suggest
a way, using javascript, to record a high score for the game instead
of a high score for a particular user, session, or computer. Perhaps
someone already has code written to do this.

We are currently trying to locate the JS that will allow us to implement a progression of low-res-->hi res load for the big background images we have on each page of our new web site.In other words, we have a ginormous photo in the background, and want to avail the browser a very lo res version of said photo while the big photo loads.I have a feeling this is a real rookie question, but still, if there is anyone that can advise I'd be super grateful

I am a back en developer and really don't understand event driven/front end development so if I use newbie terms or make no sense please bare with me. Could someone point me to some tutorials on how I might render something if and only the local machine has good processing power/ram. I am going to be rendering some stuff which will require quite a lot of processing power on the local side. Just a threshold thing really nothing predictive or anything just if ram is more than 1GB and processor faster than a P4 or something like that.

I am fairly new to javascript but I am an experienced php programmer. I have been parsing XML information using php, but my CPU usage has been too high recently due to this. I am trying to convert my scripts to javascript, but I am unsure how I can do this using javascript. I think that if I get started off, the rest will be easy.
One of my XML files is located at
Code:
http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/?method=user.getrecenttracks&user=bbcradio1&api_key=c910b0bc1e2d4e64964ebcd2d69c255c&limit=500
Basically I have been trying to grab the Name, Artist and large image of the most recent <track>.

I'm currently trying to use the jQuery Form Plugin to submit my form containing a file to upload and some other data to my 5 other servers.I'm using a php file with the following code to submit the form. It is working on every server and the file is getting uploaded correctly by the jsp usually. There are times when it will fail and maybe only the 1st and 5th will have the file. I'm thinking that maybe this is a syncing issue? Something to do with them all being called right away? Would there be any way to call them one after another as in letting the first one finish before submitting to the second?[code]

my page allows the user to enter a number in a text box and a search request is sent to the server (if the user stops typing for 200ms) using AJAX. The following is the desired behavior.
(1)User starts typing a number in the text box. As the user is typing, no search requests are sent to the server.
(2)Once the user stops typing (i.e. no key events for 200 ms), use $.post() to execute a search. What is a good way to detect that the user hasn't typed anything for 200 ms?Is there anything in JQuery that I can use?

the code myself and I was wondering a good place to pick up on some tips on
how to design them.
Also, is there a decent program out there that does it all for you at a good

What I have decided to do is this:
1. You can choose which site you wish to visit from the first page,
after pressing go it takes you to a frame page.
2. Inside the frame is the site, and a hidden frame
3. the hidden frame should be able to take the variable from the url
place it in a text box, then place the text in that text box to the external sites textbox and then submit.
giving them the search result
so far I have made the page for choosing the sites, made the sites frame pages. But the frame within those pages I cant get to take the variable from the URL and place it inits textbox, also I dont know from there how i can make a Timeout so that it then passes that text information on to the external site and submits it.

I recently launched a question answer site that connects people with
problems to those with solutions. We let people with problems pay
solution providers $0.25 for problems in over 100 categories.
As part of our service we let people review past problems and also
provide resources for their own research.
Can anyone tell me (in their opinion)?
What are the best three sites for javascript information?
What are the best three javascript books they own?

The next step after Grant Wagner's simple solution to my "Get computer name" thread, is to automatically add the web application's site to the list of trusted sites in IE.
Obviously, the user should get a popup first that says "Do you want to add this site?"
I've looked through the Wscript doco in MSDN, but can't find a way of manipulating this browser setting.
I'd expect it to be something like "setHomePage" - namely "addTrustedSite".
Is it possible?

I'm making 2 sites and need a visitor who lands on the home page of either site to first be shown a page that shows a company introduction and 2 links at the bottom so they can choose which division of the site (which website) they want to go to.Does anyone know of any pre-made java or other code that would allow for this? So that a visitor doesn't get stuck in a cycle of being taken from one home page to the other and having the pop-up every time, I'm thinking it will likely need to write a cookie saying they've seen the pop up, then it won't appear again. Each site would then have to check for a cookie from either site.
