Having A Link Which Runs A Js Function (acceptable To Have No Href?)
Jul 17, 2006
question: if you want a link which simply runs a js function is it acceptable to have no href? the problem with this is the cursor doesnt change when you hover over, but if you put # as the href it jumps to the top of the screen which is sometimes unacceptable. what it the best solution to this? granted you could do event handling behind the scenes and just intercept the clicks and prevent the href from going anywhere, but sometimes you just want to stick an onclick on the anchor tag!

I should not be coding, to be honest, I know nothing about it ...
I have a link:
<a href="linkedfile.html">LINK</a>
I want the HREF value to be carried through my jQuery function. The function goes as follows:
User clicks link Linked icons fade out and reappear smaller at the top of the page Link HREF is followed
The new page will have the logos in the same place as they fade out too and content will appear in a frame below. However, I am clueless when it comes to Ajax and jQuery and would really like to learn, hence why I am using it. How do I carry the HREF through? Or are there better ways to do it?

Can anyone assist me with what I am trying to do with the following
code (six different scenarios to try to make the functionality work
correctly)?
I want to always (and ONLY) display in the status bar 'Symantec
Corporation' whenever anyone mouses over (onMouseOver) my image or
link OR when one clicks while holding the left mouse down (onClick) on
the same image or link. Upon releasing the mouse (onMouseOut), the
status bar should be 'blank'. I need the link to open in a new window
via my function openWindow(URL) code.
What is happening in most of the six scenarios, is that when one
clicks the link, either the function doesn't engage, but rather the <a
href= takes effect instead OR that status bar shows
'javascript:openWindow('http://www.symantec.com/');' when one clicks
while holding the left mouse down (onClick) on the image or link.
Additionally, for only the link, I need the CSS/style to show 'red'
when one mouses over (onMouseOver) it and then change to 'blue' upon
releasing the mouse (onMouseOut).
How about integrating 'style="cursor:hand"' into the code or perhaps
setting some of the data via a <div> or <span> snippet? Code:

I'm using the following code (simplified version) to call a Json file, parse it and on each iteration, create a div with an ID of "tab". I'm using this with jQuery UI .tab() to create a listing with entries which have three tabs. Anyhow, the principle seems to work except that when I examine what's happening behind the scenes using Firefox console, I see that each href in the html code produced is causing the Json function to re-fire using the href as it's url target.

xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=stateChanged;
xmlhttp.open("GET",url,true);
xmlhttp.send(null);

document.forms.myform.scanner.value = "";
document.forms.myform.scanner.focus();

This pages calls a function on a separate php page to run 2 mySQL queries, the value must be put in the text 3 times in quick succession before the database is altered. I've tried all the other functions and they seem to be fine, AJAX is my weakness but I need it for the main functionality of my website. I need this to work.

Problem in the timing of the script. The problem is that when I try to get an id of an object that was added by ajax, the script doesn't recognize it. The html:
<select id="categories" name="categories">
<option value="3">aa</option>
<option value="43">bbb</option>
</select>
When I load the page, there is this script that get the value of the #categories and use ajax to fill another select and in the same ajax, I load images by another function using the new select input that was created:
function fill_subcategories(){
parent=$("#categories").val();
$.ajax({
type: "post",
url: "ajax/sub_galleries.php",
data: 'parent='+parent,
success: function(data){
$('#sub_categories').html(data);
}});
show_exist_imgs()
}
This fills this div:
<select name="sub_categories" id="sub_categories"></select>
Right after filling the #sub_categories, I use another ajax that get images of the new id of the #sub_categories, and here I get the problem.. the js:
function show_exist_imgs(){
g_id=$('#sub_categories').val();
$.ajax({
type: "post",
url: "ajax/show_exist_imgs.php",
data: 'g_id='+g_id,
success: function(data){
$('#exist_files').html(data);
}});
}
This script doesn't recognize the id of the new $('#sub_categories') select input.. why is that?

I have created some code that alerts me the contents of all the child divs inside a main div
function CheckEventLayout(){
//check all divs in area and resize overlapping divs
var RunOnce;
if( RunOnce != true ){
var StartTimes = new Array();
var EndTimes = new Array();
var i = 0;
$("div#day-view-overlay").children("div.day-view-appointment").each(function(){
var DoOnce;
if( DoOnce != true ){
alert($(this).html()); .....
CheckEventLayout();
The problem is this code is on a page that is loaded via post and if you go off the page and then back onto it jquery seems to attach the function again so it runs twice. So need to unbind this function before the script runs again.

If this search function is included in an include file with other functions it will run more than once if you click another function first, then come back to it to do another search.
Code:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("a#searchowner").click(function() {
var searchval=$("#p1").val();
alert(searchval); //test alert box
$.post("findowner.php", {p1 : searchval}, function(data){
if (data.length>0){
$("#ownerIDdiv2").html(data);
}});
});
}); //end
For example if I click the next page function, then decide to click for a new search it runs more than once:
Next page function:
Code:
$(document).ready(function() {
$('a#nextpage').click(function() {
var page = $(this).attr('page');
var searchval = $(this).attr('schval');
var maxpage = $(this).attr('maxpage');
$.post("findowner.php", {
p1 : searchval,
page : page
}, function(data){
if (data.length>0){
$("#ownerIDdiv2").html(data);
} });
});
}); //end
However, if I put the first search function in a separate include file all works perfect. Why it runs multiple times if it is grouped among other functions?

I am trying to make a variable link on a page. The page has a text box
for a stock symbol. The code is: <input type=TEXTBOX Name="symtb"
value="" size="10>
The value of the text box {the stock symbol} will complete the url.
I found code for a variable link:
<script language="JavaScript">
<!--
function variable_in_link(varible_value)
{
new_win = window.open('http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=" +
varible_value'')
}
// -->
</script>
The link I am trying to use is: <a
href="javascript:variable_in_link(symtb)">The text</a>
No matter what I do the variable_value comes back as undefined. There
is always a value in the text box.

I am making a page that uses JS to bring up a "popup <div>" when the user clicks on a particular link. I am concerned that if the users browser has JS turned off, nothing will happen when they click. I thought the way around this would be to have a valid href in the link so that if the JS doesn't work, the browser will be directed to an alternative page.
Can I include something in my JS function so that when the user clicks the link, the JS will run and disable the href link at the same time? My thinking is, if JS is disable in the browser, this function would not work, so the browser would continue to load the href link.

I'm working on a project that requires me to send stuff through an AJAX $_GET request to a PHP page which then echoes a string which then is fed back to the form on the first page.
So the GET url looks something like this:
Code:
dataminer.php?question=kassasumma&q=500&kale=10%&nro=6
I have tried to escape that URL with various escaping methods including
Code:
escape()
[Code]....
but, with no luck. The server keeps giving me a 406 Not Acceptable and it's because of the percentage sign (which is essential) in the url.

placement of the return in the following code:
var abc;
try{
//there can possibly be 1 or more answers;
abc = getAnAnswerFromPossibleAnswers("type","key");
[Code].....
One person says the return should go inside the try because otherwise during runtime a null pointer exception (NPE) can be thrown. The other says they tested and never got an NPE - even if the value didn't exist, abc[0] returned an empty object (the test showed it returning empty curly braces).
Must the return go inside the try or is it ok to be outside as in the above snippet?

I'm using the jmapping plugin and it's all working great - when you click on a location link in the side bar the map pans to the location. However what I also want to happen when I click the location link is to load more information about the location onto the page.The idea is to load the div from infodivs.aspx which has an id that matches the href of the link that was clicked. I can make the whole page load without issue but I can't get my head around the syntax for identifying the href of the clicked link and then inserting that into the load statement as a div id.I've tried this.href but if that's actually the right approach, I haven't phrased it right so farHere's the code:
$("a.map-link").click(function () { $('div#moreinfo').empty().load('infodivs.aspx what goes here?');
});
