I am facing the above problem for a chatroom app that I am making. People will enter and exit the room any time they want, so i need a member list that updates itself to reflect this on the screen of all users that are in the chatroom. What i have thought of, is to have JS call a PHP function on specific intervals, and that PHP function will retrieve user data from a database and pass it to JS to display on the list. Is this method advisable? Are there any more suitable ways of doing this? I am thinking of applying the same theory for displaying and retrieving chat messages, but i get the feeling that something's missing for this, or maybe this method is not right for displaying messages.

I have a registration form that I am working on in which I need to assign a price to each option in a selection box then write that price in the document.Then I have a radio button that will add (different amounts based on selection) to that price before it is written. Then I have another radio button that just needs to write a price based on its selection. Both of these values will be written and then totaled. (See below for a less confusing explanation)
On HTML form:
>drop down list (name courseName, value of selections 1,2,3,4)
> radio button (name returnStudent, value of selections 1,2)

This is a calculator that calculates how much a user can earn from their referrals depending on the user's Level & Member type. It's supposed to be updating live (onChange) when the user types in new values in the fields, but nothing is happening. [URL].
Code:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function calculate(){
// eval makes the script know the value is a number, and not text
var myLevel = eval(document.earningsform.level.value);
var memberType = eval(document.earningsform.type.value);
var viewed = eval(document.earningsform.viewed.value); .....

I own a GPT site that offers member Daily SUrveys. When a daily survey is completed, the time of completion is stored in SQL in Unix time format. I hired a guy to code a Countdown timer for me that would be placed next to every completed offer in member's panel and that would show how much time is remaining till the Daily surveys resets and becomes available to the member for completion again(Daily Surveys reset every 24 hours)

Lets say I wanted store a long string of text into a local storage member on a browser using javascript.
window.localStorage.setItem("key",longStringText);
Now lets assume that the text itself contains characters outside of the normal ISO-8859-1 character set (like asian or russian characters). Would the individual char values be stored as one byte or two bytes?
"hello" -> 5 * 1 bytes = 5 (normal 8859 character sets)
"hello" -> 5 * 2 bytes = 10 (unicode or an extended character set size).
Is ISO-8859-1 still stored like ASCII once was as 8 bits? Or is it 16? If I was to use a 2 byte character set then would that cut the size of my allocated local storage space by half?

I'm using jquery to make it easy for AJAX calls.
So I create a class: function cMap(mapID){//vars and stuff}
I go and prototype a function: cMap.prototype.loadMap = function(){ //jquery AJAX call }
Now in the jquery $.ajax({...}); call, I use an anonymous function on the "success:" call: success: function(data){ this.member = data; }
My problem is that inside this anonymous function call I'm trying to call a class member of my cMap class to store the data in from the AJAX call, but it's out of scope. So the JS console in FF/Chrome throws errors about bad value/doesn't exist.
How can I access this class member from inside an anonymous function? Or at least what's a good way to go about doing all this?

If my php variable, (which is retrieved from a mysql table in the php code, not shown) is equal to "1", that means the member is not eligible to submit the form, so I want an alert() to say "member not eligible!". Else, I want it to continue to submit the form. Here is my code (which I can't seem to get to work):

<asp:ListItem>option2</asp:ListItem>
[Code]....
I want the div with the id of "option2show" to be hidden unless the user has selected option 2 in the dropdown box.
If the user has selected option 1 then nothing will happen, however iff option 2 has been selected then the option2 div will appeaar. I would like this to happen before any submit buttons are press, so i guess onblur of the dropdown box.

i am building a website form which I would like the user to select a product of interest. Some products are three tiered and some are two tiered.
1. Example of three tier (3 dropdowns required only):Scooters (dropdown 1)Three Wheel Scooters (dropdown 2)
Delux 503S Bird Scooter (dropdown 3)
2. Example of two tier (2 dropdowns required only):Standing Bikes (dropdown 1)Children 300 Series (dropdown 2)
If the user wants to submit their interest for one of the products, I need to have at most 3 dropdown menus. So in Example 1, I would have 3 dropdowns in my form. Dropdown 1: Scooters Dropdown 2: Three Wheel Scooters Dropdown 3: Delux 503S Bird Scooter.In Example 2, I would only need to use the first 2 dropdown menus. (Obviously the first dropdown would contain 'Scooters' and 'Standing Bikes' in the menu list)I would like to alter the code so that the second and third dropdowns are hidden until a selection from the first drop down is made. Once for example, 'Standing Bikes' is selected from the first dropdown menu, the second dropdown menu appears and the third remains hidden due to the fact that it is not required. If I selected Scooters from the first dropdown menu, the second dropdown would appear listing all items associated with this and at this point the third dropdown menu is hidden. If i select 'Three Wheel Scooter' from the second dropdown the third dropdown menu now appears listing all Three wheel Scooters such as 'Delux 503S Bird Scooter'.

On a registration form I have 4 fields that are all dropdown select fields. NAME, CLASS-1, CLASS-2, CODE
1) I would like to activate the CLASS-1, CLASS-2, CODE fields only if the NAME IS Selected from the dropdown.
2) Also would like to make the CLASS-1, CLASS-2 as required fields if the NAME is selected from the dropdown.
How can I achieve this? Can I use some kind of a server event to activate / deactivate the fields on the form?
