CreateElement And RemoveChild -> Dynamic Add/remove
Feb 28, 2005
I'm trying to create something just like Gmail's attachment feature where you could add a new element (created on the fly), but could also be removed dynamicly. So a 'remove' link would also be 'created' for each field created. Code:

I'm using a third party to populate the table (id=roster) contents and almost each tr contains seven th or td (with no id assigned to it). I can't find a good reference or example how to write the removeChild script that can be used to target the multiple non-id assigned sixth and seventh (last child) th or td to remove them.
Also again there's several th without id that has colspan="7" attribute that is needed to be change to colspan"5". I figure I'll use replaceChild with setAttribute but not sure how I should approach the solution. So the question is how should the script be written that'll do the tricks?

I have a list of elements like so:
[Code]...
Exactly how would one go about removing all except one of the above LI elements? Also each page refresh the left over LI element must be a randomly left over element. The last part is the one I am getting stuck on... how to make sure the left over LI element is random each time.

I keep on getting a error message from internet explorer whenever I try to remove a node from the document. This code obviously works on every other browser but internet explorer. What am I doing wrong here?
var elem = document.getElementsByTagName("div")[2];
elem.removeChild(document.getElementById("loginContent"));
elem.removeChild(document.getElementById("loginContainerLayer"));

This button should remove the current <div> and replace it with another <div>. My hide() and show() are as follows:

I would like to avoid using parent divs if possible; basically I would like to remove and add a div onclick. Is there a method that's comparable to removeChild, but functions as "remove()"?

I have this code:
Code:
<html>
<head>
<style type='css/text'/>
splash { position:absolute; left:0px; top:0px; z-index:2 }
page { position:absolute; left:0px; top:0px; z-index:1 }
[Code]....
Why doesn't this remove the 'splash' element in half a second?

I've written the following small feature test.

I want to remove 'div' before returning the function. Testing in IE something like div.parentNode.removeChild(div); will fail. If I look in the dom 'div's parentNode is null, so that explains that. It needs to be appended to something first I guess.

function addRoom()

var column = row.insertCell();
column.innerHTML = "input type='text' name=txt1>";

I'm working on dynamic list with jQuery. I've appended hundreds of <li> elements with for loop to make very long list. When user scroll down again, remove older ones and append new ones at last of the list. I used$('li:lt(50)').remove() to remove first 5 elements from the list. At first, it works. But, for the second time, it always delete half of '50'. When I enter 100, only 50 elements deleted. How can it be? Could you check the ':lt(n)' selector and remove function? My HTML is very simple. only <UL> <LI> tags in the body. Tested on latest Chrome(ver.13.0.782), jQuery 1.6.2.

I'm using ajax to update options in several select forms.Its basically, like in most automotive applications, there is a drop down for brand...once selected, it will populate another select form with the "makes" of that brand. Once a make is selected.. it returns the models of that make... and ect...The program works fine for one selection. When one brand is selected, a second select box is populated with the correct makes of cars that brand produces, however, if the brand is changed, the select box with the makes of the cars is populated by the original query..twice... and then the second query. Looking for help on whats the best way to clear both the results array; i was using this...
autobrandsf.length = 0;
and also clear out the select box, which is what the removeAllOptions() function is for. As it stands, if i use the removeAllOptions(), the makes are never populated.Here is my code, broken down the best i could, in order of process.. ish.A select form that shows the brands is displayed, once a choice is made, it passes the value of the choice into this function, which will query the database
// this is the function that is called once a brand is selected:
// h = the brand passed..
function carBrandCheck(h){[code]....
This is where, the query is returned, each row is split into an individual array, and then the second element of those individual arrays are put into yet again another array.The elements of that array are then compared against eachother to make sure there are no duplicates, storing the non-duplicates into a new array. The final array is then passed into a select form, for the makes of the selected brand.
// the ajax handler:
function handleWorkResponse(){
if(xmlHttp.readyState == 4){[code]......

This is an example of what I currently have. There is also a button which adds more rows. It wasn't too hard to get it working using CSS and innerHTML:
<div id="main container">
<div id="row-1">
<input.....
</div>
<div id="row-2">
<input.....
</div>
etc
However, due to mass css headaches with the layout, I' like to see if it can be done it tables instead and using the DOM methods (nodes, createElement etc)
so far, the examples I've seen either don't allow the same functionality or don't work across IE5+(win), and modern versions of FFox, Safari and Netscape (MAC + WIN)
Does anyone know of a good class/example/tutorial?

I have an access database that is looked at through ADO based SQL. Each record entry in the database determines what type of content will be displayed in my page. Some records require that my script generate a certain amount of buttons and checkboxes. This amount will always differ, so I have to generate them depending on entries in the database. THe problem I have is removing the checkboxes. The buttons go quietly, no fuss, but the checkboxes don't want to play! Code:

I have an image inside of a div that I'd like to swap every time the function is triggered. I was able to attach first image through this: Code JavaScript: this.titlecontainer.appendChild(document.createElement('img')).src = 'images/picture' + padded_index + '-t.png';
This indeed does add another image on each function iteration but as the code suggests, it actually APPENDS additional images. Instead, I'd like to SWAP the existing image for a new one. My guess is to remove what's currently loaded inside the div prior to appending another one. What would the line preceding the above have to look like to accomplish removing of the content?

The document object has a method called createElement. Can I use this
method to create a new Drop/down list, like:
var sel = document.createElement('SELECT');
I have seen it used like this:
opt = document.createElement('OPTION');
which means that opt now holds an option that can be appended to an already
existing select object.
Are there any restrictions for which arguments createElement can be called
with? I have seen: var what is "LI"? Where do I need to look to find valid arguments for createElement??

I have a snippet of code below that creates a new input element for a
checkbox and sets some attributes.
var observationCheckbox = document.createElement('input');
observationCheckbox.setAttribute('type', 'checkbox');
observationCheckbox.setAttribute('id', 'observation.' + runningCount +
'.species');
observationCheckbox.setAttribute('name', 'observation.' + runningCount +
'.species');
observationCheckbox.setAttribute('value', 's' + speciesCode);
Question: Is it possible to set this checkbox to be 'checked' when it is
created? I'm not sure if this constitutes an attribute or not.

I have a page which uses JavaScript to create form elements using
document.createElement('input'), etc.. Both Firefox and IE have no
problem accomplishing this and when the form is submitted all the
information is passed correctly.
I am now trying to validate the form using JavaScript when the page is
submitted. Firefox has no problems with this but IE returns
'document.form1.*THE FORM FIELD*.value is null or not an object' for
the elements that were created using document.createElement when I try
get their value using 'document.form1.*THE FORM FIELD*.value'. How do
I get the value of the form elements that were created using

I try the following in Firefox and other modern browsers:
window.addEventListener('load', function() {
document.title = CSS.getClass('fontSize');
var div = document.createElement('div');
document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0].appendChild(div);
alert(div);
alert(div.style)
}, true);
It works fine in normal HTML mode (Content-type: text/html), but in
XHTML mode it alerts "[object Element]" instead of "[object
HTMLDivElement]" and the second alert shows "undefined" instead of
"[object CSSStyleDeclaration]". So I can't reach the style declaration
which is important for me. Strict mode makes trouble again and again,
the biggest bug: document.write does not work:

<table id="test" style="width:200px;border: thin solid blue;">
<tr>
<td>
Test row 1
</td>
</tr>
</table>
I have a table like above and want to use document.createElement to insert a new row at the end of the table before the close table tag, is this possible?
My efforts so far have resulted in the following html:
<table id="test" style="width:200px;border: thin solid blue;">
<tr>
<td>
Test row 1
</td>
</tr>
</TBODY>
<TR>
<TD>Test row 2</TD>
</TR>
Which doesn't display properly as table has already been closed
This is the code I've knocked up for the test so far:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<title>Untitled</title>
</head>
<script>
function test(tableObj)
{
alert(tableObj.innerHTML);
//var newTable = document.createElement("table");
var newRow = document.createElement("tr");
var newCol = document.createElement("td");
newCol.innerText = "Test row 2";
newRow.insertBefore(newCol);
tableObj.appendChild(newRow)
alert(tableObj.innerHTML);
}
</script>
<body onload="test(document.all.test)">
<table id="test" style="width:200px;border: thin solid blue;">
<tr>
<td>
Test row 1
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</body>
</html>
