Adding Onclick With CreateElement?

This is driving me insane. I'm trying to use createElement inside a loop to make some <divs>, each of which has an onclick event. I threw together this test page to demonstrate it:

When I click on any of the boxes it alerts "5", the final value of x after the loop ends, instead of what the value of x was when the loop executed and created the element ("0", "1", "2", etc.). This is happening if FF and ie.
I also noticed in Firebug if I put a breakpoint on the "yay.onclick=function(){alert(x)}" line that it will break everytime I click on one of the boxes. Very strange...
How can I put in a variable on the yay.onclick=function(){alert(x)} line and have it "stick"?

In IE6 and below, when using createElement and appendChild to add a new select element to the page, it automatically selects the first option.
the page relies on using the onchange event of the select element, and if there is only one option and it is selected, there is no possible way to fire the onchange event.
To get around this, i've had to use innerHTML to build the select element, which I feel is dirty so I want to clean it up.
Any idea's? I have already tried setting each option's selected value to false, etc but nothing other than using innerHTML seems to of worked,.

I'm using the document.createElement method to add dynamic table and from elements to a page, but I'm running into a problem where I'm adding 2 objects to 1 cell. The two of them combined are not wider than the cell, but they won't display next to each other, they're always on their own lines and I can't figure out why...
HTML Code:

The text input (hiddenElement) should fill 1 line of the cell, but then the two buttons (createButton and cancelButton) should both sit on the line below it, but the cancelButton insists on siting on it's own line below the creatButton, and I can't figure out why.
(I know they have their display set to none, that's being set to block by a function, which is how I know they're all on their own line)

What advantage does adding elements via document.createElement have over writing markup naturally with innerHTML?

The latter method has much more overhead and is considerably more difficult to write with. However, there must be an advantage of some sort to doing it this way, but it's not exactly clear to me why.

I have these following code:

As you can see the image has an onclick associated with it.I want to do a similar thing with the selection of the font-size.As the action needs to occur after the client has selected the size, probably I will need "on buttun up" ( or is it onRelease ? ) this one <select name="x_size"> ?or on all the option statements ?

I can't seem to add an onclick event to an image. I'm sure I am doing something wrong as I am very new to Javascript.

I am trying to add an onclick event to a div from within javascript. Basically i have 2 divs containing arrows ("<<" and ">>"), used to toggle the week of a calendar. At the moment the ajax communication and handling of the response is working fine. After i processed this, i want to switch the arrows, basically add onclick to the previously non-active arrow and then nullify the previously active arrow. How do i go about doing this? My name is juan and recently started html programming. I have a web page with a drop box with the name of states.

I can add a onclick="code here" to the tag so that when the drop box alabama is selected it triggers the onclick event. Im using Ibox in order to have a image of the state open.

Im trying to develop an AJAX application which updates a <select> list with a series of <option> tags when the user makes an entry in a field.
Therefore, my ajax application needs to dynamically create <option> tags and append them to the <select> list on the form. I have got this working in all browsers. However, i do not know how to add an "onclick" event handler to each <option> tag that is dynamically created in my javascript code.

I'm using the ibox javascript library which is very similar to lightbox in functionality. I'm trying to do something seemingly simple but am having difficulty.
My goal: Use ibox to show a dynamic graph based on a clicked link.
When the user clicks the link it will grab data from the current table row, format it, and render it using the flot library. This will all be done in a hidden div. This is easy enough. Then the hidden div will be displayed using ibox.
These are both easy enough tasks individually. What i'm having trouble with is combining them into a single click.
Currently I have it setup like this.

When a user clicks this link the loadGraph() function never executes. I'm assuming this is because priority is being given to ibox (indicated by the rel attribute). How can I force my onclick event to be executed before the ibox is loaded?
I would even be ok if it was executed after the ibox was loaded, my main goal is to get both actions to occur in a single click.

I am in the process of creating a billboard script for our company front page which will switch between two images. I am using the following script as a base: [URL]
I am eager to learn coding, but am still a novice at it so I was wondering if anyone could assist me with adding the following functionality:
1. Rather than (or perhaps in addition to) having the two images change based on a timer, I'd like to be able to insert a "next" arrow. Therefore I will need assistance in coding a button to change the images from "ad_1" to "ad_2" which is currently done automatically by the interval timer
2. I'd like to make the images clickable with unique destinations (so when you click on "ad_1" it will take you to "link 1", "ad_2" will take you to "link 2"

Complete newb trying to break apart existing code to add some additional function.

I am dynamically creating page elements by looping through an array and adding them to the DOM. Each element has an action that should be performed when it is clicked. This action (or a reference to it) determined by the current array value as well. Because the code called in the onclick handler is not executed until the event fires, the value of the current array item (at the time the onclick handler is attached) is not preserved resulting in the expected behavior not happening.Here is an extremely simplified example of the problem I'm facing:

The document object has a method called createElement. Can I use this
method to create a new Drop/down list, like:
var sel = document.createElement('SELECT');
I have seen it used like this:
opt = document.createElement('OPTION');
which means that opt now holds an option that can be appended to an already
existing select object.
Are there any restrictions for which arguments createElement can be called
with? I have seen: var what is "LI"? Where do I need to look to find valid arguments for createElement??

checkbox and sets some attributes.

I have a page which uses JavaScript to create form elements using
document.createElement('input'), etc.. Both Firefox and IE have no
problem accomplishing this and when the form is submitted all the
information is passed correctly.
I am now trying to validate the form using JavaScript when the page is

I try the following in Firefox and other modern browsers:

It works fine in normal HTML mode (Content-type: text/html), but in
XHTML mode it alerts "[object Element]" instead of "[object
HTMLDivElement]" and the second alert shows "undefined" instead of
"[object CSSStyleDeclaration]". So I can't reach the style declaration
which is important for me. Strict mode makes trouble again and again,
the biggest bug: document.write does not work:

this works perfectly in firefox - but in internet explorer it just creates the first lable and the input field, although it creates the input field as a regular text field instead of for files. the caption label and text field aren't created at all. any ideas? Code:

I'm having trouble parsing through a table in I.E. Of course it works fine in firefox and chrome. I'm pulling html off of a txt doc and storing it in a temporary div made with createElement so I can go through and parse out the data. Code is below:

I'm experimenting with creating SVG dynamically and am finding that document.createElement is changing the case of the tags I input. This is breaking because, apparently SVG tags are case sensitive. For example, when I try to create a linear gradient element like so:var grad = document.createElement('linearGradient');what appears in the view source is:<lineargradient ...> (Note the lowercase "g")The tag doesn't work if the "G" is lowercase. Is there any way to specify in the <html> tag (or somewhere else) that the document should preserve tag case?
