A Prevent Default On The <a Href> In Pure JS?
May 9, 2011
I am loading a link with ajax. When the link pops on the screen and I click it, I get redirected to my 404 page and my lightbox doesn't load. If the link pops in and I refresh my browser, then I click the link my lightbox will show up. How can I do a prevent default on the <a href> in pure JS? No frameworks.

I'm trying to set a cookie when a user clicks a hyper link.
Do you think I should prevent the default behavior of pressing a link first, and then set the cookie?
Or could I just set the cookie on a hyper link click event, and hope the client sets the cookie, before they are directed to another page.

how to handle a callback of an event, before it performs the default href function.
<code>
<a href = '<?php $url ?>' onclick = myFunction(); return true;>Click Here</a>
</code>
I want the onclick event to finish completing and then perform the default href function, which is denoted by the "return true". The javascript "myFunction()" opens a window in a pop-up and it has a submit button in it. I would like to wait till this page loads in the pop-up window and only after the user clicks on the close button, the default href function needs to be carried out. I cannot figure out on how to get the callback from this event.

I have a DOM loaded from a remote site, i cannot alter that page. The DOM has a input:submit in the form that looks something like this:
<FORM NAME="frm1" METHOD="POST" ACTION="ServletController;jsessionid=72CDF83C126FFF9D87821CE9E9B9E860.fre01" onSubmit="return checkFormSubmit();">
<input type="hidden" name="mode" value="apply">
<input type="submit" name="Apply" value="Apply" onClick="return applyClicked();">
</FORM>
I need to replace the default ACTION with an ajax post with the current form data, but I also need to keep the:onClick="return applyClicked(); here is what works, however I cannot get the return applyClicked() to prevent the submit if it is false.

I've a nested list which looks something like:
<li>This header of sublist
<ul><li>item1</li>
<li>header of subsublist
[code].....
Now I would like to wrap the text and only the text (i.e. 'This header of sublist', 'item 1', 'header of subsublist','item2.1') in a <span> tag. I tried $('li', his).wrapInner('<span class="test"></span>') but that includes the ul element as well, which I would like to exclude.regards,

I've been pretty infatuated with JSON for some time now since
"discovering" it a while back. (It's been there all along in
JavaScript, but it was just never "noticed" or used by most until
recently -- or maybe I should just speak for myself.)
The fact that JSON is more elegant goes without saying, yet I can't
seem to find a way to use JSON the way I *really* want to use it: to
create objects that can be instantated into multiple instances without
prototyping. I've seen (and used) JSON for singleton object instances
-- this not a problem and this is how it works right out of the gate.
But given the following custom object written the past "normal" way, I
would like to write it in JSON format, and then be able to create new
instances from the one definition. Here's an example using the "old
way" most who have been writing JavaScript for years have seen:
function Two( x, y ) {
this.x = x;
this.y = y;
}
Two.prototype.sum = function () { return this.x + this.y }
Two.prototype.max = function () { return this.x this.y ? this.x :
this.y }
Two.prototype.min = function () { return this.x this.y ? this.y :
this.x }
Two.prototype.pow = function () { return Math.pow( this.x, this.y ) }
Now, I know I can get all "fancy" with the above and do either this:
Two.prototype = {
sum : function { return this.x + this.y },
max : function () { return this.x this.y ? this.x : this.y },
min : function () { return this.x this.y ? this.y : this.x },
pow : function () { return Math.pow( this.x, this.y ) }
};
Or this:
function Two( x, y ) {
// Properties.
this.x = x;
this.y = y;
// Methods.
this.sum = function () { return this.x + this.y }
this.max = function () { return this.x this.y ? this.x : this.y }
this.min = function () { return this.x this.y ? this.y : this.x }
this.pow = function () { return Math.pow( this.x, this.y ) }
}
(The later seems to work without prototyping...!)
But neither are really as close to pure JSON as I would like, so that
I can instantate those:
var hisPair = new Two( 11, 22 );
var herPair = new Two( 33, 44 );
What I'd like is a way in PURE JSON to be able to create the Two class
(as an example) using pure JSON. I've not seen anything yet on the
web that addresses this directly aside from some pages which require
you to include another JS to allow "deep embedding" of classes using
other helper "classes" (that are created the "old way" it seems), etc.
The best I've found so far on using pure JSON to create a class that
allows *multiple* instances is something like this:
function Two( x, y ) {
var class = {
x : x,
y : y,
sum : function { return this.x + this.y }
max : function () { return this.x this.y ? this.x : this.y }
min : function () { return this.x this.y ? this.y : this.x }
pow : function () { return Math.pow( this.x, this.y ) }
};
for (var element in class) this[element] = class[element];
}
Now *THAT* works, but it's still not as "pure" I would like. But it's
acceptable for now, I guess, since I *am* creating the entire "class"
as a JSON object, and I consider the outside function "wrapper" as the
necessary "constructor." But I keep wondering... There HAS to be a
better way.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a place that discusses JSON used
in situations like the above. Again, I've seen an ABUNDANCE of pages
and sites that discuss JSON in Singleton usage, but nothing that
discusses it as I am wanting here.

I'm using the following code (simplified version) to call a Json file, parse it and on each iteration, create a div with an ID of "tab". I'm using this with jQuery UI .tab() to create a listing with entries which have three tabs. Anyhow, the principle seems to work except that when I examine what's happening behind the scenes using Firefox console, I see that each href in the html code produced is causing the Json function to re-fire using the href as it's url target.

I've looked for this and I wouldn't know what the best practice would be
for solving the following problem.
We use a BASE tag in our HTML pages. Now we have some links that use the
<A HREF="#" onclick="...">Hello</Amethod to invoke a JavaScript.
However, because of the BASE tag, when clicking a link containing only a
# as 'href' it will load the root index.html file. What I want is it to
do nothing and execute the onclick handler.
Now I have two possible solutions:
- Replace the # with javascript:... and remove the onclick handler.
- Replace the A HREF by a SPAN having the same style as a link.
Both however, I've learn it isn't good practice to use javascript: in a
link. The SPAN as link would be a sort of Sim-HREF, which will probably
end up being trouble (span:hover anyone?). Anyone has a viable solution,
cause I must be missing something.

I found this handy little script on the net that means the user can only press backspace or numbers in form input.
<script type="text/javascript">
function numbersonly(e){
var unicode=e.charCode? e.charCode : e.keyCode
if (unicode!=8){ //if the key isn't the backspace key (which we should
allow)
if (unicode<48||unicode>57) //if not a number
return false //disable key press
}}
</script>
<form>
<input type="text" size=18 onkeypress="return numbersonly(event)">
</form>
It works, but it's not foolproof.
2 issues with this code.
1) Can I stop a user from accessing my website if he/she is not using
javascript?
2) Can I prevent a user from breaking the code and entering other
stuff by placing the cursor in the box and pressing ctrl+v (paste)

So, I have a set of divs in a sentece, and within one div is a link. When the link is clicked, I have all the other divs fade out, and the link is supposed to move to the left, then up. I can accomplish this easily, however, I've noticed that there's a pause between when all the divs fade out, and then the moving of the link. During that pause, it jumps to the leftmost edge of the div that it is contained in.Is there a way to prevent the div from jumping? The following is the code that I have. (I've supplied the html and javascript)I tried using callbacks to prevent the div from jumping, but that didn't really work...

I'm a j-script (and html) newbie with what I thought was a simple
requirement:
1) From a link in a primary window open a secondary window
2) Want to specify size of secondary window
3) Want primary window NOT to reload when secondary opens
Don't want to prejudge the approach; I'm guessing Javascript can help,
and in fact have accomplished 1) and 2) above with the following,
embedded in the body of the primary window html:
<a href="javascript:location='primary_window.html'
window.open('secondary_window.html', 'secondary_window_label',
'height=345,width=550')">link_text</a>
But when the secondary window opens, the primary window reloads. I've
seen earlier posts addressing this problem (or similar ones), but I
haven't been able to make any of the suggestions work.

Let me give a brief first. When someone logs in my application with
correct username and password, I set a session attribute, say "user"
with his username.
When he logs out, I invalidate the session and remove the attribute
"user". In each of the protected pages, I check for the session
attribute "user". If it exists, I proceed, else I rdirect to login
page. Btw, I am also using frames when the user logs in.
Everything is working as I want it to. Except one thing! After the user
logs out and then goes back using "back" button of the browser, the
page displayed says that he has been logged out and needs to login
again. But if he refreshes the page (after going "Back"), the page
reloads with correct information, as if he is already logged in.
What do I do to prevent this?
I am fairly new to JSP. So, maybe I am missing out on something....
