XMLHttpRequest - Execute A Functions When The Body Loads

Mar 1, 2011

What I'm trying to do is execute a functions when the body loads. This function will make an XMLHttpRequest and then recals itself every 2 minutes for example. The good thing is it really recals itself every 2 minutes, but it doesn't make any changes. The XMLHttpRequest is a request to an XML file on the internet which changes often, and I want the data of it. When my function recals itself, it displays the data of the first call and never changes after that. So I guess it never makes a new XMLHttpRequest, or it doesn't update the returned data.

Execute After XMLHttpRequest?

Feb 3, 2010

I got a javascript function to pull contents from a php page, let's call this page B to the actual page, let's call this page A.

As I know when a page gets loaded the javascript on that page won't execute, am I right?

Now I need the javascript code on that page B to get executed. Is that somehow possible?

Execute JS Function After Page Loads ?

Sep 23, 2010

I have long html/CSS (no CMS or php, etc.) web pages. Some people run away when they see too much content on a page. So I hide the large lower section of the pages and have the user click anchor text to execute simple JS code to change the display from 'none' to 'block' or back to re-hide.

Code:

(BTW my research indicates that search engines do not know the difference between display='none' and normal content, or I would not be hiding content in the first place.)

Within this hidden content, I have anchor text to provide name handles

Code:

So users can click a link and go directly to that section. Within that link I include

Code:

So that works fine within a particular page. But when I want to link to an anchor on another page which is within this hidden content, the browser cannot display the anchor text because it is still hidden.

Is there a way to execute the JS code to change the DOM, changing the display to 'block' on the content of the new page?

I do not see how, because the new page isn't loaded yet, there is no DOM within the browser yet, so how can it be manipulated?

Of course if I was using php I could generate the code with the property set as desired. But for straight up html/CSS/JS pages is this possible?

I get the feeling I am missing something simple here, either a simple solution or the simple fact that this is just an inherent limitation of html.

JQuery :: SOT: Execute JS Before A Specific Image Loads?

May 20, 2009

Can I intercept the loading of an image BEFORE it loads? We're looking at using an img tag for inserting stats on our server. Here's what I'm considering.

1) Collect certain information server side, write an img to the document like so (note the URL vars): <img id="statsImg" src="stats.cfm?somevar=someval" width="1" height="1" />

2) Using JS, intercept the load of this image BEFORE it takes place, and add things to the URL vars. This way, if JS is not present, you get the default stuff, but if JS is present, you get extra stuff.

Auto-executing JS Functions With/without Body Tag?

Sep 19, 2009

My site has a template design using PHP includes. I have a chatbox include on the home page, which itself is an include of the master page.
The chatbox include contains all of the javascript functions for the chat. The problem is that I need to have a function automatically execute to start the chat, but I don't know how to do this without using 'onLoad' in a body tag. As far as I know, body tags should not be used in an include.How else can I have the 'startChat()' function load automatically?

Calling Multiple Functions With A Single Body Onload Call?

Jul 19, 2011

I have a web page that has a short flash show on it, then it redirects to the main site index page, using a setTimout in body onload. That was all working fine. Now I need to add an OS detection function to redirect iphone and ipad users immediately (bypassing the flash pape). So, I have 2 functions that need to be in the body onload. I figured the logical thing to do would be to write another function that calls the first 2, then put that one in the onload. But now nothing is working. I have played with in for an hour with no luck.

Just as a note: Original, before I had to add the OS detection, there was just the delayer function, and it was called thusly:

Which Loads Faster, Body Onload Or Window.onload

Dec 3, 2005

I wander what gets loaded the fastest (1-2 or 3) in what succession:

<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function andAction() {
// doing stuff
}
</script>
</head>

<body onload="andAction();">
<script type="text/javascript">andAction()</script></body>

just in the head and nothing more

This I am sure off:

<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
window.onload = function andAction() {
// doing stuff
}
</script>
</head>
<script type="text/javascript">andAction()</script></body>

just in the head and nothing more (should be 1)

Third and last which is faster:

body onload or window.onload

Make Body Content Scroll At The Same Time As An Iframe Located Within The Body?

Feb 21, 2011

I'm trying to make my body content scroll at the same time as an iframe located within the body. This has to do with the age old problem of mouse focus on iframes. When my mouse reaches the iframe and it takes over focus, I would like the body to keep scrolling until the iframe is right at the top of the screen. After that I want to relinquish focus to the iframe. I don't mind if the iframe starts scrolling as soon as the mouse reaches it, so long as the main body keeps scrolling for a while.

Page Loads Slowly - Page Loads A Second Or So Slower With Each One Added

Dec 2, 2011

It seems like when I load javascript code into a page, that each item I add, such as an accordian vertical navbar, image slider, etc, that each time I add one, the page loads a second or so slower with each one added. I would like some of these features, but is this just a part of life, or are there tricks to avoid the slower load time? It is not major time but after the 2 items I mentioned, it added on about 2 seconds.

I read that $(document).ready(function() might slow me down but I do not see that statement in any of my .js files.

Getting Nested Functions To Work Within Functions?

Aug 20, 2009

I have written a number of functions designed to return frequency data on 1000 randomly chosen numbers using different math functions for the rounding. I would like to include all of these functions within the wrapper of another function so that only one call is needed to get returns from all of the 'inner' functions. However, while each of the functions works in isolation, the moment I wrap them in another function they stop working. :confused:

The following code is one of the functions 'frequencyWrapperOne' that has been wrapped in the function 'testWrapper'. A call to testWrapper does nothing.

function testWrapper()
{
function frequencyWrapperOne()

Oo Xmlhttprequest

Mar 13, 2005

Yesterday I started rewriting the xmlhttprequest functions to an oo equivalent, but as it turns out, I don't get it right:

Code:

function Request()
{
this.req=init();
this.req.onreadystatechange = this.processedRequest;
//addEventHandler/attachEvent alternative
//doesn't work either

function init()
{
try
{
if(window.XMLHttpRequest)
return new XMLHttpRequest();
else
return new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
}
catch(e)
{
alert(e);
}
}
}

Request.prototype.send=function(url)
{
this.req.open("GET", url, true);
this.req.send(null);
}

Request.prototype.processedRequest=function()
{
if (this.req.readyState == 4)
{
if(this.req.status == 200)
{
response=this.responseXML;
res=response.getElementsByTagName('result')[0].firstChild.data;
func=response.getElementsByTagName('feedTo')[0].firstChild.data;
eval(func+'('+result+')');
}
else
{
alert(this.req.statusText);
}
}
}
expected usage:

Code:

var x=new Request();
x.send(url); //the processing function
//the eventtrigger should activate the callback function
//when the xml has been returned

It seems like the problem is that I don't get to my "this.req" in the processedRequest function. Can anyone see where the problem lies, it has been turning me crazy all weekend already.

I have something like this:

XMLHttpRequest, and I have all needed code... let's say it works...

So I got serviceRequest.responseXML and is there a way to initialize xmlDoc
in my case ? I am asking because I have code that uses xmlDoc.load(...) in
FF and all code that's need to futher work with XML written. So this would
be comfortable for me to use xmlDoc instead of creating everything from
start.
