Variable Set Inside Results Is Not Defined For Use Outside JSON Call
Nov 7, 2011
I've got this:
Code:
var noteCount = "";
jsonRequest('media.getFiles', params,
function(result) { noteCount = result['totalCount']},
function(exception) { noteCount = "0"},
true
);
The console returns results['totalCount'] with a value of 2 (that's correct).
When I call noteCount for display, it shows nothing. Neither the var set by result or exception.

The general framework is a simple user login function. The user name is selected and a password entered as usual. The function grabs the element values and passes them to a php page that queries the database. An AJAX call returns the password to the function and then I want the innerHTML to be a choice of two web pages, depending on success or failure of validation. There are existing AJAX functions available on the internet but they are overly complicated for what I think should be a simple, quick to load function.
Where I am stuck is that the standard procedure to make an AJAX call is the browser window event. How do you make the call from within the function? I have tried creating two new variables, "success" and "again" to replace xmlhttp, but still stumble on the event to assign a value. I left the blank password protection (if statement) with that variable to demonstrate what I mean.
I've put in my code below, which is in development and successfully alters the innerHTML text depending on user input but I can't figure out how to insert the relevant php page. I have '// out' the testing bits, but left them for info. (I have tried full 'scripting' as the innerHTML, but it's messy.)

I am trying to build a webapp for questionnaires where I can defined the questions in json, and have a single html page using jquery to build the UI. Since there will be a finite number of question types, e.g free text questions, multiple choice questions my code can choose how to render each type appropriately.
what is considered the best approach to build a UI like this?
I have seen the manipulation api with methods such as append() but I'm not sure if appending the html tags via strings (e.g. "<input id='answer'/>") is going to be the best way to achieve this, or whether there is a better way to define snippets of html for the different question types and copy them into the page as necessary?

i'm not really sure how to explain this, since I know nothing about javascript, so i'll try and illustrate by the use of php (hope it makes sence)
I have a set of different links, like:
<a href="link.com?page=text1">text 1</a>
<a href="link.com?page=text2">text 2</a>
<a href="link.com?page=text3">text 3</a>
etc, where page is dynamic and can be anything I chose..
Another place in the same document, I echo out what the page variable is, like:
echo "$page";
so when clicking "text 1" the echo will output what i've defined the page to be, in this case "text1" ..
So I want to be able to click the links and change the output of the echo all depending on what i've defined in the link - without refreshing the page!
Is there any easy way to do this?

I am having difficulty displaying a specific key from a json file. I am trying to parse the following json file using query:
[URL]
I am using this type of function to parse the data:
$.each(json.route,function(i,route){
<!--add a paragraph tag to the results div and enter the speficied key-->
$("#results").append('<p>Result: '+ route +'</p>');
Using this I am able to print all the keys from the route but I am not able to print a specific key.
What I want to do is just get the results for the key "fuelUsed" using this method:
$("#results").append('<p>Result: '+ route.fuelUsed+'</p>');
But I never get back any data that way. Am I not specifying my key correctly?

so, the pseudo code: - on change of input contents, check to see if two input fields are set - if set, update a third field with "loading..." text and a loading gif - use ajax to send data to a url, and get a calculated json response - update the third field with the calculated response
I know I'm getting the correct response, according to firebug: {"pace":"10:00"}
the code:
$('#run_distance').change(function() {
if ($(this).val() != '' && $('#run_time').val() != '')
{
$('#run_pace').val('Calculating Paceā¦');
[Code].....
how to update the #run_pace input field with the json response.

I'm trying to use window.open from inside a user defined function, and
it's not working.
Mountain Man
============
<script>
function openFootnote(contentURL) {
window.open('contentURL','footnotes','height=180,w idth=160');

I've tried calling on the function 2 different ways, as shown below.
Nothing happens either way.

I am having a problem of calling the user defined JS function after I make the AJAX call. Basically, I created couple radio buttons on the main html page. When the user clicks on one of the radio button, it will trigger the AJAX call and return another html file in the "div" content that I set in the main html page. The other html file contains a user defined JS function (e.g. "updateContent()") which use the onclick event handler to call the function. When I'm running the app, and click on the button. I had seen the firebug was complaining the "updateContent() is not defined" error. The function itself works fine and must be defined properly.
Here is the code in the main.html page:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
var asyncRequest;
function getTools(url){

I am currently working with a cms system that doesnt keep within the correct name conventions (pre defined).Within a form, I simply want to set a date to todays date:
<script type="text/javascript">
function initdt(mf) {
var t = new Date;
[code]...
This works perfect on a form I create, but sadly I must use a form within a pre defined system that uses "01-date" Is there a way around this? A simple way of setting 01-date to t.getDate();

I'm using JSON/jQuery to pre populate a drop down menu. What I want to do, is once I select a plan from the drop down menu and click submit (go button), to get the details about the plan. The drop down menu get's pre populated, but I don't get anything after clicking go. I check the functions and it seems that in the DoPlanSearch() I get the alerts showing the newly constructed URL that gets me the correct JSON. But not sure what happens once the data is processed after that. I say this, because my alert statement in the DoPlanSearchCompleted(data) gets me NULL data.
I'm just getting started with this, I'm not exactly sure what's the best approach. Also, I'm not sure the way .JSON files is setup here works, it does on my Dev server though.
Code has line: function DoPlanSearchCompleted(data)
It should read function UserPlanSearchCompleted(data). The same problem though exists.

I've got a page that lists a bunch of info in a large table. In each row is a link, and when that link is clicked on, an ajax call fires that returns detailed info on the item in that row. I usually display the html just to the right of the table, but the table has gotten too large. I need to display the info in a pop up now. The only thing is, how do I get the results of my ajax call into a pop up window? I've been having an awful time getting this to work.
I'm using JQuery to make the ajax call, what can I put in my success of complete event to create the pop up using the data the ajax call returns?

My site is run on wordpress, but I'd like to customise the menu so that if the user is logged in the menu displays "Logged In" and if they are not it displays "Log In".Normally I would just use an if statement in PHP to output the required html, but as I can't use PHP code in the menu item I need to use Javascript. :mad:So, the way I figured this would work is:1) PHP code in the header checks to see whether the user is logged in2) This code then outputs JS to define a variable (varCheckLogin)3) JS within the menu checks varCheckLogin and outputs the html i wantThis sounds good hopefully. :DUnfortunately this isn't working at the moment. The code I have is:HEADER: (I know this works as the variable is being output correctly in the source code)
<?php if (is_user_logged_in()) {
echo '<script type="text/javascript"> varLoginCheck = "Yes"; </script>';
} else {

I've been writing a new layout for part of my web page.
The java script is not creating the list. When I check Firebug I get an error:
QuoteMovies[movctr] is undefined [Break On This Error] MovieList+= Movies[movctr][2]
If I take out the var MovieList and just have it print the text "MovieList" instead of the contents of MovieList the code tries to run. I'm not sure why it won't copy the content of the var MovieList.
Live test version of my movie page
Here is my code:
It's also weird that is says that Movie[] is undefined instead of Movie[][].

I've a picture gallery with the images stored as variables in a javascript file like this:
var a100image10 = new mypicture("album1/a100image10.jpg");
var a100image11 = new mypicture("album1/a100image11.jpg");
I've a "next" button to show those images (one by one) in a div with this code:
document.getElementById('image').innerHTML = "<img src=images/gallery/"+eval(album+"image"+next+".getPath()")+"></img>";
where the eval function returns the path of the pictures.This works fine! but in IE I get an error saying a100image12 not defined (and image13, image14, etc), because that image is not in the javascript file.So, how can I test in advance if a variable exists in the file?? Note that I take the name of the next picture based on the current one.I mean,I take the current picture from the div, lets say a100image10, I add one, and I try to look in the file for the variable a100image11.

I am trying to use a $.post call in jQuery to check a user's credentials before submitting a form (so I can show errors without reloading the page), but I've run into a problem. I know why it is, because AJAX is not synchronous, but I just can't figure out how to do it.
In my code the script I'm making the call to returns "valid" or "invalid". If the return is "valid", I want to submit the form, if not, show an error message. Here is a simplified version:
$("#my_form").submit( function () {
some_value = "username"
$.post(script_location, {data : some_value}, function (data) {
response = data
[Code]...
This obviously does not work because code is executed quickly one after another and the variable "response" is not yet set when the execution gets to the if statement, since it is set sometime later, asynchronously.
I looked into using functions, callbacks, but nothing seems to work properly, I always run into the same issue. This is probably really simple, i just a complete dunce, please do let me know what is the standard way of doing this properly.

Using a while loop in a function, I am trying to test an input character against a stored string of characters. I want the function to return the input character only if it is not in the stored string of characters. The code I've prepared is as follows:
<SCRIPT language = "JavaScript">
var storedLetters = 'sideways';
function requestLetters(aString)
{
var validLetter ='';
[Code]...
The code works fine if I remove it from the function wrapper but if the function is called I keep getting an error message that the variable validLetter is not defined. :confused: Can anyone see why this is the case?

consider the next code:
var obj = {};
with(obj) {
var x = 10;
}
print(x);
print(obj.x);
It prints 10 and undefined. Here, one could expect that obj.x get the
value 10. But it's not the case, because variable declarations are
placed at the start of function code (or global code), so the
previous code is equivalent with:
var obj;
var x;
obj = {};
with(obj) {
x = 10;
}
print(x);
print(obj.x);
You can clearly see now that x is placed in the outer context. But
consider the next:
var obj = {};
with(obj) {
eval("var x = 10;");
}
print(x);
print(obj.x);
I was expecting that obj.x would get the value 10 here. But no, it
gives the same output as the previous code. I tested it with
spidermonkey, kjs and ie jscript. Looking at the ECMA spec, I could
not find anything that describes that behaviour. Code:
