Sort Outer And Inner Strings Alphabetically
Sep 2, 2007
Is it possible to sort outer and inner strings at once? The sorted output should look like the following:
<category>Bars</category>
<name>Alpha Bar</name>
<name>Beta Bar</name>
<category>Cafes</category>
<name>Ara Cafe</name>
<name>Zeta Cafe</name>
Categories and names are both properties of one and the same array element.
I have the following compare function to sort the outer categories.
function compareCats(a, b) {
a = a.category;
b = b.category;
if(a == b) return 0;
else if(a b) return 1;
else return -1;
}
This is working fine. But I really would like to include the inner names in the compare
function without changing the structure of the array - if it could be possible. If not - what would be an efficient way to solve the problem?

I'm trying to alphabetically sort a table in javascript (that is actually automatically populated from an XML file). The table is a list of words in 3 languages, one of which is Italian. What is happening is, the sort() function I am using to order the words is not considering accented characters, such as:
that should be sorted exactly as their corresponding ASCII characters A,O,U,E,I

I want to display my listings like they do here: http:[url]....The code on my end calling the third party service looks like this:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
document.write('<script language="javascript" src="http://###########.com/?bid='+####+'&sitenumber='+#+'&tid=event_names&pcatid=2&showcats=true&title=Concerts Tickets"></' + 'script>');
</script>
How do I make it only display one letter at a time? I believe some variation on the sort method might work...

OK so Ive been using jquery for a little bit now and love it. I am a ColdFusion developer. I have a need where I would like to present the user with a list of categories and the user can drag and drop to sort, but then I need to post this new sort order to the database. So I see there are a ton of cool drag & drop plugins for jquery. I understand how they work and I can get it to work as far as spitting out DIVS or spitting out ULs that can be sorted, but then what? So now they are sorted on my screen and not really part of the form. How do I translate that into something I can do a post to the database with? Do I do an AJAX call every time they drop an item and try to extrapolate the sort order on that item after they drop it? Do I populate a hidden form field with the constantly updating sort order list? MAybe a list of ID's? How does everyone else go about this this task? I'm sure there is more than one way and I'm sure this is a common task.

I've been learning javascript for about a week and I'm really struggling right now. This is a homework assignment to help in learning loops and arrays.
What I want to happen is when a form button is hit it will replace the array from the one previous instead of just adding to it. Hopefully that makes sense. What do I need to do? here's my code....

I am using javascript to find the browser window's innerheight and outerheight(ie both document body + task bar ,statusbar,menubar etc)I am using the following command for the calculation of the above thing
This one works perfectly for the following browser's GoogleChrome,Safari,Firefox with small problem on Firefox
Following is the problem
The window.outerheight and window.innerHeight returns different values:
a)when the script is run locally on the same browser
b)when the script is run after publishing the page on the server and ran from the same browser.
This issues do not come for other browser except firefox.For other browser the outerheight and innerheight comes same, before and after the script is published on the server.
The firefox browser version used is : firfox 3.6.16. Os is Windows Xp

I work mostly in PHP, with just a bit of JavaScript when necessary. I've inherited an app that among other things, uploads files to the server. When the user clicks the "Save" button, it targets an invisible iframe and actions the php upload script -- that is:
Code:
<form action="doupload.php" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" name="doupload" target="doupload_iframe_target">
The outer, top level window has the icons for the files uploaded so far, and the total number.
The upload works fine, but the icons & total count don't get updated in the outer window unless I manually click refresh on the browser. Naturally, I'd like the new number and icon list to appear automatically after an upload, so I tried putting both:
window.location.reload(); and parent.location.reload();
at the end of the doupload.php script within the iframe (appropriately encapsulated in <script> </script>).
Both of which work, sort of, but they apparently repost the data to the iframe, which causes the upload to be re-executed, which then causes the reload to happen again, for an endless loop.
If I manually refresh the browser page from the firefox toolbar, this doesn't happen; it just refreshes and shows the new total number & appropriate icons.
So obviously I'm out of my depth here with the javascript and dom structure. I want to refresh the top window without reposting to the iframe.

I'm having difficulties arithmetically manipulating form element values.
I've entered data into the form, and I fetch them using a js, as:
p7Left = Number(document.form1.elements["p7_left"].value);
p7Right = Number(document.form1.elements["p7_right"].value);
...
...
scoreLeft = Number(document.form1.elements["left_score"].value);
scoreRight = Number(document.form1.elements["right_score"].value);
Then I add these as follows:
scoreLeft = Number(scoreLeft + p&Left + ...... +);
This does what I want; without the operator 'Number' I get a concatination
of the various variables (as expected). Is there some way of globally
defining all variables as numbers instead of strings?

Safari and FF seem to allow this:
var wiggy = "ABCD";
ch = wiggy[2]; // ch will contain the character 'C'
however my JS book seems to insist that I do this:
ch = wiggy.charAt(2);
and indeed doesn't appear to mention the first method at all.
Since for my particular purpose I want to treat the string as an array
of single characters, I prefer the first method rather than the second.
Is there any reason not to pursue this approach?

I have two strings that I need to compare and modify when there is a
matching value in the two. If strA = ??,' then I need to remove
the value ??,' from strB and the new value would be strB =
??,12935'
strA = ??,'
strB = ??,12937,12935' (these could be any values in any order)
I'm not sure where to begin on this.

I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to help me out in understanding a few things about sending a variable through a URL..
firstly:
i have two pages on page1.html i have a link which is:
window.location = "page2.html?name=yournamehere";
on page2.html how how would i be able to access the variable "name" ?
i know the following code works for strings, but i want to be able to directly access the variable that has already been assigned a value.
function parse(){
var Loc=this.location.toString();
var URLarray1=Loc.split('?')[1];
}

Code:
a = document.createTextNode("< somestring >");
....will transform < into < and > into >
When I want to read that node later, I can only get it back in
this form: "< somestring >"
Is there a function that transforms such strings containing
HTML codes back to normal strings? Something like:
string deHTMLize (string);
What I need is to quote and send a part of the document when
user clicks a button, so I need the string without codes.
