Select An Option From A Menu List?

I'm having trouble making JavaScript select an option from a list menu. I created the list menu using an array with php. I.E.
HTML Code:
<? $states = array('NY', 'NJ', 'CA');
for($s = 0; $s <= 2; $s++){?>
<option><? echo $states[$s] ?> </option>
<? } ?>
So then I have some JavaScript code, that automatically determines which state you're in. My question is, how do you get JavaScript to select the state the code has determined you're in? I tried these, to no avail.
document.form.states.value = currentstate;
document.form.states.select= currentstate;
currentstate being the variable that determines the current state you're in.

cna anyone tell me how to use the Select = "selected" option for a simple dropdown. for example when someone chooses c it will have a code like <option selected="">c</option> (am I doing it right, well if you got a firebug some site with dropdowns offers that option) so can anyone tell me how that works. I will be using it for a purpose of just selecting parts on my array, well incorporating it

I have a form that uses jeditable to edit-in-place several fields and select boxes. Everything is working great. Now I need to a way to add a new option to the select list. What I would like is the user select "Add New..." from the select list that would pop-up a dialog window where several fields are filled in. When the form is saved the select field is updated with the new ID and description. I use Facebox for pop-up windows to display notes when the user clicks on a topic. I know Facebox can be used to display a form. It would be ideal to use this ability when creating a new option for the select box.

If i have a drop down list on my website, and i want to use javascript to change its selected value,however, i do not have the id/name attribute of the option i want to select, only have the "value" attribute of the option, can it be done?

I am still having trouble creating the Select Menu option. I got parts
of the correct syntax but it is still not creating the selected carrier
as an option in the parent page.
Help apprecitate,. I currently have it commented out just to show the

How to find out the previously selected option value in a select list?
For example: I have a list with 3 options

When user select, for example, option 3, how can i find which was the previously selected option? etc... I've found some javascript example that evaluate "previousIndex" property of the select element but it doesn't work at all

My mission: Open/collapse TD cells based on items selected in a list box. Getting no response from jQuery so I've done something wrong but cant quite get there. Listbox 'mainselect' contains option values that refer to names of TDs in a table. When a mainselect option is clicked, it will toggle to open or close the referenced TD list box by option value. Does hide/show make a TD 'blank' or actually set it's width to '0'? I want it to close, moving other cells left.

Basically, I have written an application that runs a report based on a certain amount of parameters, one of which being date. So, the date selection is a <select></select> dropdown menu and it has the usual in it, today, yesterday, this week, last week etc. The problem is I need it to have a 'Custom' selection to run reports for custom dates. When 'Custom' is selected in the dropdown menu, two text boxes appear underneath with YYYY-MM-DD watermarked in them. I have assembled enough code from around the web to get this to work and it works fine, the problem I have is that when the user clicks off the 'Custom' option and on to a different one, I need the textboxes to disappear again.

I want a page to have a different item pre-selected in an option menu-button according to the parameter at the end of the URL. Eg if the URL ends in "?choice=Beta", the item that says "Beta" should be pre-selected. Here's what I have so far:

I have a scenario where I show a drop-down-with-few-items in a JSP page, to the user.
The length of few options in the drop down is greater than that of the drop down's, hence our requirement is to show the hovered (not selected) option as tooltip for user's convenience. I am not able to use title attribute for displaying tooltips in my browser.

I am currently looking to create a JavaScript menu for a website I am working on. It currently expands and collapses on click. The code in question is pasted below:-

As you can see, it basically shows and hides the menu (when clicked). I want it to open the menu when clicked and close when another menu is opened. I have looked and have not been able to find a solution into it. Ideally I donot want it to be a long piece of code as I do have a working menu but with many more lines of JavaScript than the one I have posted.

Is there a way to remove (not disable and not delete) an option in a "select" list, and restore it later when needed?
I have a form with many huge lists ("select" with many "options") that depend on eachother. I am dynamically updating the form through server, and wish to update the list values by sending a mask string. This way I could remove and restore the options without the need to pass the whole list again.
I tried many ways but none work:
* option.diabled="disabled" is not good because it is still shown
* option.style.visibility='hidden' is not good because it is still taking a row
* option=null is not good because I will not be able to restore it
I need a method similar to the following one for remove/add fields in a form:
remove:
<field>.style.display='none';
restore:
<field>.style.display=block';

I have an select option list, each option has a numerical id, value and text. Each option has an array of its own. So when I choose an option from this list, I want to insert the options array into another option list with an id, value and text. Whats the best way of doing this? How do I select an array based on the value or text of a select option? For for example, take a list of car makes. If I choose the make Audi, how do I select the array of Audi models and insert these models into another select option list. All makes and models have their own numerical id, value and text.

I wanted to create a small DHTML code that created a unordered list of input forms dependent on the number selected from the select dropdown menu. Problem is that it doesn't seem to want to generate the list. I think the variables are within the scope of the function too, and I didn't get an errors from the javascript console when using firebug. The script itself runs, I tested it when I used the old standby alert(); to see if the script was active. Here's the code:

I'm using the following code to remove an option from a select control based on a selection in a different select control and the option text in the select option that is being removed. The code works as I want it to, but I would prefer to use the option value for identifying the option to remove instead of using the option text.
