Running Javascript Without Relying On Subsequent Code
May 29, 2006
Say I have the script doing the following:
myFirstFunction();
mySecondFunction();
myThirdFunction();
What happens with Javascript is that, any commands executed in myFirstFunction and mySecondFunction are not applied, displayed, or apparent until myThirdFunction has finished executing. How can I get code to execute asynchronously without relying on subsequent code executing?

The first time I enter the command n it should run the first if statement, when I enter n it should then run the second one as its in zone two. However this is just not happening... What am I doing wrong. Its simply running the second one and skipping the first.

I have a rather lengthy javascript application that I want to run in it's
own window. It looks like it is no problem to do using the window.open and
document.write commands, however this seems like a lot of extra code to wrap
every line of my javascript with mywindow.document.write(""); Is there
anyway around this or perhaps a different approach to running javascript in
it's own window?

Does anybody know a way to retreive the running timers (their ids) in a html
page?
I cannot find something in the html dom at first sight.
Is there collection of timers available (like window.all[], forms[],
frames[] and such)? Some other way?
When you create a timer (setTimeout), the return value is the timer id.
Suppose that some script (which you do not own and cannot change) calls
setTimeout but doesn't store the id. How to retreive it, to stop the timer (clearTimeout(id))?
I though to override the "setTimeout" like below, but that doesn't work.
Probably since the original setTimeout is used before I declare this new
one.
var oldSetTimeout=setTimeout;
var timerSaved=0;
setTimeout = new function(arg,time)
{
/*alert('timer: '+arg+', '+time);*/
timerSaved=oldSetTimeout(arg,time);
return timerSaved;
}

I have a input field like this
<input name="To" type="text" class="input" value="<%=toList%>" size="106"
this calls validateUser() as soon as I update the input field and lose focus
from it.
What I want is that this validateUser() should also be called on the intial
<%=toList%> that I am filling. I tried adding
but that didn't work.
What should I use ?

I was debugging my code looking for a loop. So in the process I added a confirm request and if the user clicked cancel I coded location.replace("Kill.html"). Problem was that the JAVASCRIPT continued to run until either it finished or I used the Task Manager to end the session. :( There3 was a small difference in browsers: Firefox put up the new screen while continuing to run the JAVASCRIPT while IE didn't put up the new screen until after the JAVASCRIPT was finished. I could tell the JAVASCRIPT was still running because the confirm messages kept popping up.

I have put some javascript into my html page (using IE6 as browser), however I get the message: "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options...." Once I have selected that and specified to allow for blocked content ... the javascript runs ok. However I do not have the same problem with loading other webpages (also containing javascript) from the internet!! Does anyone have any ideas?
Another problem I have is that I have opened a popup window, which has a stylesheet linked to it. However it does not seem to know about the stylesheet as my text fonts/ styles are not displayed.

I have an HTML form which contains two date fields to accept airport taxi bookings, sometimes clients book one way, sometimes they book return journeys, some cases even involve 3 or more journeys.
Now there is a field for the date of each journey all contained within one HTML form:
date0, date1, date2 etc... depending on how many legs there are to their journey.
What I'd like to do is set an initial value for all date fields based on the value the user enters into the first.
So if the user enters: 24/04/2009 into [date0] field then [date1] should be automatically set to be 7 days later and [date2] 7 days after [date1] etc.
The user must be able to overwrite the initial values, without affecting the previous dates.
Code:
<form name="form1" method="get" action="booking-function.asp">
<%'ASP Loop Condition for number of date fields to display%>
<input name="date<%=(x-1)%>" type="text" maxlength="10" />
<%'End ASP loop%>

$(".photo img").click(function(){
var title = $(this).attr("title");
$("#display").attr({src:"photo/"+title+".jpg"});});
$("#display").css({"marginTop":"-233px"});

When the page first loads, something goes wrong and your first attempt at viewing any thumbnail always comes up with a blank missing image - but from that point onwards, any subsequent attempts work as intended.

Relatively new to jQuery but have a problem with getting data to display.Using a webform with 2 forms. User slects and inputs data into the first form, clicks a button then using jQuery .ajax submits the serialized data to a php script. The script processes the input into multiple paragraphs of text which is based on the input from the first form.The data is returned to the webpage and displayed in a text area (of the 2nd form) where the user can edit it to fine tune the wording. The 2 forms are displayed in different tabs so it is easy to move back and forward between the 2 forms.
The problem occurs when the user goes back to the first form and enters or selects different text and then click the submit button to generate a whole new text for insertion into the textarea on the second form. For certain fields the modified text is displayed.However if the whole of the text in the textarea is deleted, then the user clicks the submit button to re-generate the text content area then nothing at all is ever interted into the textarea. If have user alert to check that data is returned from the php handler and this text is correct. BUT when I click on the tab to see the textarea (id is "draftrec") there is no text inserted. The relevant function is below and the line that should insert the text into the textarea is:
$("textarea#draftrec").html(data).show();
//------------------------------------------------------
$("form#form1").submit(function(e){

Consider the following code:
<html>
<head>
<script src="jquery-1.3.2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
function DocLoadup(HTMLName,DestDiv)
{
$(document).ready(function(){$("div#" + DestDiv).load(HTMLName);});
}
[Code]...
All seems straightforward enough; and all works well without hitting the error console on FireFox However, I am concerned that, due to my newness in using the toolbox, I've missed something here. In particular, is there a need to explicitly clear "div1" in DocLoadup BEFORE loading the div with subsequent content? Can anyone see anything else in my humble DocLoadup function which would pose a compatibility/functional problem somewhere (for the record, I'm using this to load a page with js in/linked to it)?

The main problem that has got me stumped at the moment is that clicking on the images in the 1st tab work fine. However the subsequent tab selections and clicks do not change the "bigImage" correctly (not at all).
Perhaps some other more experienced forum members can identify what I doing wrong at this time. :confused: I believe it is in my set-up of the onclick events in the "onload=" section, but I not the best at this event stuff yet!

I am working on a piece of code for an academic experiment and it
puzzled me for days, any help?
I use javascript to sort a table in a html page. bascially, a user can
click on any attributes and the javascript code will rank the contents
of the table based on that attribute. This is done.
Now I want to record the click information into an access database.
basically, wheneve the user click an attribute, I want to use asp code
to insert the click information (userid, attribute_clicked) into an
access database.
My current solution is use window.open in javascript and in the open
function, I insert the url of the asp. something like this:
var nW = window.open('', 'newwnd', 'width=0,height=0,left=0,top=0');
nW.location.href = "desc.asp?subjectid="+ subjectid + "&item=" +
attributeinfo;
nW = null;
However, the problem is there is always a popup windows appears when
the code was executed.
What i want to know is if there is anyway to let the asp code running
in the background invisibly by user?

I have copied from a site a javascript code for my web site to create a
pop up. This works fine on older versions of browser but not the most
recent. Whilst I have been searching for some new code to replace the
old code I have also learnt that the javascript will not always work
as it may not be enabled.
Therefore does anyone have some code that I could copy that will work
fine on all browser and if the javascript is not enabled.

of the Amount fields along the right to automatically equal the PETTY

TOTAL AMOUNT field come up automatically as being the sum of the PETTY
CASH SUB-TOTAL and the PER DIEM SUB-TOTAL fields. Please see the
following as an HTML document to see what I'm talking about......

I need to add some javascript code block dynamically to a web page.
I looked into the various postings at various groups but none seems to
be solving my problem.
Among the approaches suggested first one is to create a script element
and set its properties (src etc) and then adding this script element to
the head element.
This works good for a dynamically including the files. But, in my case
I do not have any files but generating the content dynamically which
should be available to other javascript functions in the page. The
script that I need to add dynmically is given Code:

AIUI, it was not all that long ago when the threat to personal users,
was attachments that when executed compromised machines with keyloggers,
trojans, etc.
Now it seems that the big problem is reading a webpage or an HTML e-mail
and getting affected through the scripting. My understanding is that
the script downloads the malicious program from the web and sets it to
run on start up through the start-up folder or in the registry.
I don't know much about this; can someone suggest a good web site to
start learning a bit more about these threats. I have googled, but I am
not quire sure of the best search terms, and since there is so much
information out there, a site that experienced people endorse would be a
lot of help.
In particular, it seems as if JavaScript dowloading a trojran without
the user clicking an attachment is a big problem.

Should I code for users without javascript? I don't know of anybody who doesn't have javascript turned on, but I have seen stats that say users without javascript run as high as 10%. I went to music.yahoo.com, I saw that they didn't code for no-javascript users, leading me to believe the no-javascript is a highly rare group.
