I am having a strange problem with a javascript function that does not return the value but returns the code inside the function. My best guess is that I am incorrectly calling the function hasLandedOn()and jquery is interpeting it. Why is this happening? I highlighted the parts in red.-Tom ReeseThe following is returned NOT the variable imageName.
function hasLandedOn(){
var selectorLoc = $("#selector").offset();
var imageName = "";

I have what I think is a strange issue but others may see something I am missing.I am using AJAX functionality to process a php script on a server and then place the output of the script into a div element.Here is the code snippet
Code:
function doWork13(typeCode,colorBlockName,objectCategory,imgID){
httpObject = getHTTPObject();
if (httpObject != null) {[code]....
This code shown here works perfectly BUT....I do not want the alert message to be there. When I remove that line of code the script fails to function. There is no error just nothing happens.The function is to replace one image with another and the variable in question is simply the ID tag of the particular image being modified.As I said it works with the alert but does not with out, could it be a timing issue in that the alert gives enough time for the if statement in the setOutput13 function become TRUE

In one variable i have some data ex: var data = document.getElementById("imageId").value; I want to pass this data to another function inside another function ex: var button1 = '<img src="images/Remove-button.gif" width="70" height="15" onclick="removeVerifyImageRow(this),saveLibData('+data+')"/>';
while running the application i am getting an error incase if the data is string ex:if data is 'image1' i am getting an error, but with number there is no problem ex: if data is '1122'.

Here is the code:
for (var i = 0; i < BS_crm['activityTypes'].length; i++) {
var clickFunc = function(){ activityList.showForm( -1, {blockType:[""+BS_crm['activityTypes'][i]['id'], "0"]} ); };
var type = {
[Code]....
Now, basically what I am doing here is running through one array to create an array of objects, that will be used to create links that will use whatever onClick function I pass it. The problem is that on the second line I need the BS_crm['activityTypes'][i]['id'] to be a value, not a reference. If that line was simply changed to:
var clickFunc = function(){ activityList.showForm( -1, {blockType:["3", "0"]} ); };

I have develop an ActiveX with Visual C++ 6
And I will call functions on this ActiveX from a javascript.
I know how to instantiate the activex object (with the balise <object>).
But how can I do to call a function of my ActiveX and pass to this function
some parameter by reference.
Here is what I have :
the function in the ActiveX :
void test(long *t, long FAR* nb)
{
t = 3 ;
}
And here is what I try to call this function in javascript:
var myT = 0;
my_control.test(myT); // here is the problem that
alert("T : " + myT);
But I receive the value 0
So how can I do to pass parameter by reference to a function of an ActiveX?
Is there anything to change in my function in the ActiveX?

I have just started using the data functions in jQuery for keeping track of a few items on the client. The user can click on links, which call a function that updates the display and stored data value.I am storing data as a set of columns, named c1, c2, c3 etc.
I update the relevant column like this
function UpdateCol(column)
{

I have this code:
HTML Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>
[code]....
The practical scenario is I have several functions attached to the jQuery ajaxSucess event. Each function needs to execute once during initial load and after when the JQuery ajaxSuccess event is fired. So I am just looking to see if I can eliminate a a few lines of code and learn something new in the process, that is really all.

I need to create a code that takes in a function f and a variable x and gives me f(f(x)). For example, if f(x)=2*x and x=3, then f(f(x))=12.
I've tried to look at this from two angles: creating an extra variable to define the function within the function and reusing f on itself. But I can't use either properly.
How can I get my main function to accept a function as its first parameter [function(2*x, 3)]? Is that even possible? I could specify the function f within the twoTimes function, but the point is for f to be a changeable parameter.
I had come up with, but it definitely doesn't work. How should I approach it?
var twoTimes = function(f,x) {
f = function(x) {};
var r = f(x);
return f(r);
};
twoTimes(2*x, 3)

This will work perfectly, but as soon as I need to pass Strings inside the selectShape function, I get stuck.
So the question is, how can I create the following and have it working

I need it to work on all browsers as I understand this is difficult for this type of command.
Why does the below code not work in ANY browser let alone all of them.

file1.html

I'm wondering if there is a way to identify the "current" tag or the tag within which an event is triggered as a reference point in a javascript function.
Thus, can I set up a function so that when a certain tag is clicked it will do something to, say, the child of the tag that was clicked?
The function would say "do something to the child of the tag that triggered the event by being clicked."
I know I can do this by identifying the tag by ID, class or some DOM location. What I want to know is if I can can identify it by the fact that it is where the event was triggered.

Is it allowed to define a function INSIDE some 'if' statement?

I'm trying to access some of the global's inside my class LiveSearch
and I have no idea how to go about it. Here is what I have so far:
<script type="text/javascript" src="query.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
function LiveSearch(global) {
this.theglobal = global;
this.initialize();
}
LiveSearch.prototype.initialize = function() {
$("#thebutton").mousedown(function() { //when we click the button
alert(this.theglobal);
});
}
$(document).ready(function() {
var objSearch = new LiveSearch("globalvalue");
});
</script>
On page load I create a new LiveSearch instance and it assigns
theGlobal = "globalvalue" and proceeds to initialize(); At this point
Im using JQuery to setup an onmousedown event on a button on my page
with id="thebutton". When I click the button the alert comes back with
'undefined'. How can I get direct access to my theglobal variable? Code:

I think I've had JavaScript variable scope figured out, can you please
see if I've got it correctly?
* Variables can be local or global
* When a variable is declared outside any function, it is global
regardless of whether it's declared with or without "var"
* When it is declared inside a function, if declared with "var", it's
local, if not, it's global
* A local variable that is declared inside a function is local to the
whole function, regardless of where it is declared, e.g.:
function blah() {
for(var i ... ) {
var j ...
}}
i and j will both be visible within blah() after their declaration.
* the notion of "function" in this context also applies for this kind
of construct:
var myHandler =
{
onClickDo: function()
{
in the sense that whatever one declares inside onClickDo with "var"
will only be visible inside onClickDo. What else, am I missing anything?

I'm making a project which creates tabs with a class. I don't really know how to explain it better but this is how it works:
<a href="#" id="tbs_tabs">Create</a>
<script type="text/javascript">
var tbs = new Tabs('tbs_tabs');
tbs.theme = 'classic'
tbs.create_option('abc','#');
tbs.create_option('abz','#');
tbs.create_option('abf','#');
tbs.create();
</script>
It first creates the new class and tells it the id, then it creates as many options as you want and creates it.
My problem is with this line:
for(i=0;i<this.option_values.length;i++)
{
li = document.createElement("LI");
li.appendChild(document.createTextNode(this.option_values[i]));
addEvent(li,"click",function(){oThis.select_option(i); return false;};
ul.appendChild(li);
}
What I was trying to do here is add an event to the LI element that refers to the current tab class but doesn't use the CURRENT i value but the value that was when the event was first created.
For example.. If my i value is currently 2 and I add the function, then I want that when I call the function, the value will still be 2 and not the current i value. What happens now is when I call the function the value is something like 5 or 6.
