Opening File From Browser

Feb 28, 2003

I understand how it works, however, when pressing the open button to open the file, I'm getting a javascript error that says "Access Denied". Does anyone know how I can make it possible for a user to select a file and open it from my webpage? This would work great if it actually worked! Any ideas?

Re-opening Browser With Confirm Box

Oct 28, 2007

I'm new to Java Script and I'm having trouble getting something done. What I'm trying to do is have a confirm box open when the user closes the web page that asks a question. If the user clicks cancel, then the page stays closed. On the other hand, if the user clicks OK, then a page opens. The problem is, I have no problem getting it to work if the user "unloads" the page by using a link to another site, but I don't know if it is possible to use java script to re-open the browser, and then open it to a specific page if the user unloads the page by closing the browser.

My logic says it's not possible. Java script works in the browser, so how can it do anything once the browser has been closed? Am I right? If not, can you show me how to edit the code to make it work? Here's what I have so far:

<script type="text/javascript">

function showalert(){

var conf = confirm("text here");

if (conf == true){
window.location.href = "http://www.nameofpage.com";
} else {
return true;
}}

</script>

Opening New Browser Windows

Feb 26, 2003

I have a question about opening new pages when a link is clicked on a webpage. What I want to happen is this:

On the main webpage, I would like to have links to other websites. For example:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Now, if I was to click links 1,2 and 3, I would have 4 browser windows open: The window containing the original webpage, plus the 3 windows that were opened by clicking on the 3 links. (I am using a href="www.,,,,," target="_blank"></A>)

Now, what I want to happen is this, I only want the mainpage to have ONE child window so that at any given time, there will be at most 2 browser windows open, the main page window and one child that is opened by clicking on a link. If I click on Link 1 followed immediately by Link 2, I don't want 2 child windows to pop up. What I need to happen is when I click Link 1, it needs to open a window. When I click link 2, the browser window that contains the webpage from link 1 now needs to show the webpage that from link 2. Is there a way to do this using javascript window.open? Code:

Opening New Browser Window - Hiding URL?

May 12, 2011

I want to open a new browser window using javascript. I don't want to display URL in the dialogue. Here is my code.
Code:
var windowFeatures = "top=100,left=100,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no,menubar=no,location=no,directories=no,titlebar=no";
var windowObjectReference = window.open(resourceURL,"_blank",windowFeatures);
The new dialogue shows the URL but doesn't allow to modify it. Is there any way to completely hide the url? Although I have specified resizable=no browser allows me to resize the window. I am using firefox.

JQuery :: Use Specific Css File Depending On Browser And Browser Version

Sep 18, 2010

On my site i use a lot of features that are unsupported by older browsers, and right now it looks pretty stupid when the features are only partially shown. So i was wondering if there's a way of making the browser look to different css files depending on which browser and version it is. For example, css3 gradient backgrounds are supported in firefox 3.6 or something, but not in 3.0. All the hacks out there is to 3.*, so it changes for the allready working 3.6 too if i hack it. I want to controll it so that i have a specific css file for the none-supporting version and lower and one for the supporting and above. I looked at a bad browser plugin (because it has some of the basic features im looking for)

Print File Without Opening It?

Feb 17, 2009

I have a webpage with a link that causes a file to download. I'd like the file to print instead of downloading. I do not want to open the file because it is an XML format specific to a barcode printer and seeing it is not useful to the user (as well as usually causing the browser to complain). I am, however, fine with using the regular printer selection dialogue that Javascript accesses with the print command.

Opening Random File In Same Window?

Aug 23, 2010

I am trying to write code a page which will randomly generate links to sound files. I want the user to be able to click on the link and then hear the sound file without a separate window opening up, or the page changing. The following code generates the links correctly, and some of the code allows files to be played in the same window. But only when the file is specified i.e. not randomly generated. I can't figure out how to combine the two things i.e. generating links randomly, and playing the file in the same window.

Code:
<html>
<!-- code for random links -->
<script language="JavaScript">
function randomsound(){

Saving A New Element To XML, Without Opening The Entire File

Dec 18, 2007

i basically have a log (log.xml) that i'm wanting to add a new "row" to everytime something happens in the web application. however, log.xml has the potential to get huge and opening/saving/etc... could start taking up quite a bit of resources.

i'm just wanting to simply add a new row to the xml file without pulling in the entire xml file. can this be done?

the log looks something like this...
<log>
<entry date="12/18/2007 12:03:42" description="This is a test."></entry>
</log>

and i just want to keep adding to the xml without opening up the entire file.

i also have PHP loaded on the system - so maybe that's an option as well... pass the entry through javascript to PHP and have it write the new entry?

File Browser Form Tool

Jul 26, 2006

I am writing a database which I edit locally using PHP / MySQL / JavaScript. What I currently do is to list all my DVD covers from a single folder into a drop box but what I would LIKE to do is to have a browsing facility (similar to uploading files) which is obviously a lot quicker. However, what I need is not an upload file form object, rather a simple click button which will
open a browser, allow me to select a file and return the name of the file - just the file not the full directory structure. Is it possible to either just get the file upload form object to return just the name or, using either PHP or JavaScript write a function that will do what I need?

Output/Input To A File Instead Of The Browser

Jul 20, 2005

I have a CGI that logs into a a secure site of mine. Basically, all the CGI
does is send the username and password I have set up, and then the normal
page opens in my brower. But, I would rather send this HTML to a file, parse
it, and spit out a different page depending on the user that's logged in.

The problem is that once the username/password gets passed to the web
server, it opens to a new page, the default page. How can I get the HTML
from that page without it opening in the browser?
