Popup Window.opener Redirect

Jan 31, 2008

I'm creating an html-based kiosk for a museum exhibition. It's a page-turning exhibit, so visitors to the museum will be able to turn the pages of a document. The monitor will be a touch-screen and the main browser window will be set to fullscreen, so the user will not have access to any browser features.

All the pages are built and work. My problem is that I want as many users as possible to see the homepage when they approach the kiosk (not the page the most recent user was last looking at). So I'm working on a way for the main window to redirect itself back to the homepage.

The solution I'm trying to make work is this:

When any page is opened (besides the homepage) a timer script runs. When the timer reaches 0, it activates a script that creates a new popup window that says, "Click here to continue reading from the current page." If someone clicks the popup, it goes away and leaves the main page beneath. If no one clicks the popup, it also goes away, but in this case, I need the main window to redirect to the homepage--this is the part I can't figure out.

I think (and I'm new to this so I'm probably wrong) I want an onunload action related to the popup window, so that when the script closes the popup window it will access the main window and change its location. Can this be accomplished with a window.opener in the popup script?

I've tried to do this by putting on onfocus action in the body tag of the main page, to redirect when the main page is put in focus. But in this case, the onfocus action executes when the main page originally loads--I need it to execute when the page is "refocussed." Code:

Redirect / Close Popup Window

May 4, 2011

I am trying to do two things. I have PDF files but the user has to click on the icon and a contact form will come up in a pop-up window. That window has a form and once the form is completed and properly validated, I want the pop-up window to automatically close and go to "white_papers.com?download=1". It will do everything but it only goes to white_papers.com. How can I get it to go to the entire URL including "?download=1"?

Window Redirect Doesn't Work In Chrome?

Dec 21, 2011

I'm trying to do a redirect using the below code:

<script type="text/javascript">
window.location.href = "http://google.com"
</script>

FF and IE work as they should. Chrome doesn't.

The request above to http://google.com, gets a 'canceled' status in Chrome browser > Development tools > "Network".

I've tried several other functions:
location.href = url
location.replace(url)
document.location = url
location.assign(url)
window.open(url, '_self')

Same code pasted within a local html file works fine.

Below is the redirect request that it's canceled by chrome: [URL]

IFrame-name.location Problem Redirect Parent Window

May 5, 2006

After executing the iFrame-name.location=url (which worked fine by way,) there is a very undesirable event; the parent window also gets redirected to the same url.:mad: I am calling this function from a click event on an Image object. I have tried everything from return(false); to window.event.cancelBubble = true; nothing stops the parent window from navigating. The interesting thing is, if I hit the Back button it goes back and still redirect the parent window automatically, over and over.

The odd thing is I have identical code in another project and I never had problems.

Here is a portion of my javascript func:

function clicked_SubmitScreensBtn() {

var url = "ovExplorer.asp?Action=show&QData=BLABLABLA";
var iFrDoc = document.frames("ifrmOVExplorer").document;

iFrDoc.location.replace(url);

window.event.cancelBubble = true;
return(false);
}

And this is my iFrame in the HTML of the parent window:

<iframe name="ifrmOVExplorer" id="ifrmOVExplorerID" src="blank.htm" style="Z-INDEX: 10; VISIBILITY: visible; POSITION: absolute; LEFT: 22; TOP: 380; WIDTH: 306px; HEIGHT: 280px;" marginwidth="1" marginheight="1" align="left" border="0" frameborder="0" scrolling="no">
</iframe>

How To Read Meta Tag Value With Js?

Nov 23, 2005

Does anyone know how - or better yet - have a sample of how to extract information from a meta tag in an HTML document's head tag using Javascipt?

I have looked at the DOM with Firefox - but it seems so long. I'd be really interested in a better way. If someone has the javascript for walking through the DOM, that would be cool too. I havn't built it yet.

Meta Refresh

Jul 23, 2007

I have a requirement to hit a page, run some JavaScript, and move on to another page. It's uncertain whether the user actually has JavaScript enabled, so I can't use JS to effectuate the move to the second page. Here's what I've got:

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv='refresh' content=&#390;url=page2.html'>
</head>
<body>
<script src="http://www.example.com/example.js"></script>
<script>
_xxx = "xxxxxxxxx";
xxx();
</script>
</body>
</html>

My question: will the JS run before the refresh to page2.html? I tested this with an alert() in the script and it seemed to work fine. I just thought some of the W3C gurus out here might be able to give more authoritative answers.

Stopping Http Or Meta Refresh

Jan 14, 2009

I have a web page which takes a while to generate due to serverside processing. I currently show a "please wait" page, which includes a meta refresh tag, as well as a refresh http header, to refresh the current page every X seconds to check if thier data is finished processing. They're also provided a manual link to click to refresh the page, just in case thier browser doesn't like automatic redirection.

I think this works great for just about all users. But I have this idea that it would be nice if I used ajax to check back with the server instead of making the browser reload the webpage. I want this to be an enhancement of functionality, so that users without javascript or ajax capability still fallback on the solid current functionality. This means I need a way to stop the browser from obeying the http refresh header and meta tag. Is such a thing possible with javascript?

Passing Meta-knowledge About A Form Element

Jan 20, 2006

I need to create a table where each element has certain specific properties.

For example, elements in the first column should always have a range of
0-100, and increment by 1. Elements in column 2 might have a range of
0-360, and increment by 0.1. Altogether there might be 8 elements in
each row.

Since this is basically the same javascript function over and over, I
wonder if there is a way to create some <input> element that might
contain this knowledge in a way that javascript can access it.

For example, could I have

<input type="text" class="percent" onkeypress="javascript:blah(event)">

where the javascript function could retrieve the class value?

Since this is going to be fairly complex, I'd like to make it fairly
self-documenting and simple. It's much easier for a maintainer to
understand class="precent" than "javascript:blah(0,100,1,event)",
especially since I am also going to have to pass navigation information
(is this a border element in the table? what are my neighbors? kind
of information... - so that the actual information might end up being
javascript:blah(0,100,1,5,21,16,18,0,1,0,0,event) to denote the data
type, the 4 neighbors, and the 4 border conditions....

JQuery :: Selector Incompatibility With Meta Characters?

Dec 22, 2011

I'm working for a company as a consultant and i'm trying to upgrade their jQuery version to the latest available (1.7.1). Previously they were able to do a selection such as $('a[name*=word<>word]') without any problems, however, after upgrading to 1.7.1 the selection is invalid even when escaping both meta characters with a double backslash ( $('a[name*=word\<\>word']) ) - I know the best solution would be to just change the selection based on something else like a class name, but this is something they are using across the whole site and we have a deadline for this.
