Javascript Can't Read From External CSS Page

Dec 28, 2006

If you give an element an inline property, as in

<div id='testDiv' style='display:block'>blah</div>
then an alert(document.getElementById('testDiv').style.display) will of course give you "block." But, if you give the element a property through an external CSS file, the same alert comes up empty!

This is causing me big problems as I've discovered and is ridiculous. Can javascript read properties from external CSS sheets?

Creating A Link With A Javascript-read XML Page

Oct 24, 2005

I have an XML document which lists some information about movies(Title, actor, etc.) I am using Javascript to pull that data and display it as html. Is it possible to create a link for each one of those titles that are pulled from the XML in my JS? Here is my code:

for (var i=0; movies.length > i; i++)
{
var Title = movies[i].getElementsByTagName("title");
var Actor = movies[i].getElementsByTagName("actor");
var Price = movies[i].getElementsByTagName("price");
results += i+1 + '. ' + ' "<span class="title"><a href="http://www.imdb.com">' + Title[0].firstChild.nodeValue + '</a></span>"' +
' starring <span class="actor">' + Actor[0].firstChild.nodeValue + '</span>' + ' and costs approximately $'+ Price[0].firstChild.nodeValue + "<br/>

";
}

document.getElementById("displayresults").innerHTML = results;

Read Css From External Sheet Via?

Jun 12, 2010

I got some divs with IDs which I position via css in an external file.So I got something like this on the html-site:

<div id="i1" onclick="move(1)"></div>

In the css-sheet there ist something like this:

#i1 {position:absolute; left:193; top:47; height: 20; width: 20; background-color: #369e1c;}

Everything is positioned as I want it, but I want to read out the position of the div (to position something else), but getElementById somehow doesn't work. It all worked well, when the css was directly in the page, but it won't if it's in an external file.Basically I do something like this:

function move(where){
var ids = "i" + where;
var newtop = document.getElementById(ids).style.left;[code].....

How Can I Read Args From Url Using Javascript?

I thought this would be simple for me to work out, but I can't seem to find reference to it. I'm flexable on how I call a URL, thus, if I have any one of the following:

http://www.mydomain.com/index.html?err=1
http://www.mydomain.com/index.html?dup

How can I read the value to the right of the question mark?

How To Read Dynamically Generated XML With Javascript And ActiveX XMLHTTP Object?

Jul 23, 2005

Ive been banging my head on the wall for hours with this one, hopefully
someone will know what Im doing wrong here :

The Goal:

I have an xml file that is generated on the fly via JSP which I want to
load into a Microsoft.XMLHTTP ActiveX object and manipulate via
javascript on the client side. Data is retreived from the server at the
request of the javascript without having to reload the page.

The Problem:

For the JSP to dynamically output xml, the file must have the extension
JSP, which is set to the mime type of dynamo-internal/html on the
server side (as we are using ATG Dynamo). But the javascript on the
client side will not retrieve anything unless the file extension is
..xml (or the mime type is recognized as text/xml). So the only way I
can get it to work is to change the extension to .xml, which then of
course amkes it so that the server will not process any of the JSP
code.

Ive tried to override the mime type within the javascript, using the
setRequestHeader method after opening the file, but no luck. A call to
alert the value of req.responseXML.xml after the send() turns up empty.
Ive only gotten it to work if I use a static xml file in palce of the
jsp. Sample of the javascript code is below:

if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
// branch for native XMLHttpRequest object - THIS WORKS
req = new XMLHttpRequest();
req.overrideMimeType("text/xml");
req.onreadystatechange = processReqChange;
req.open("GET", "models.jsp?cId=300006&mId=TAC24", true);
req.send(null);
alert(req.responseXML.xml); //this gives me the resulting xml file
} else if (window.ActiveXObject) {
// branch for IE/Windows ActiveX version - NOT WORKING
req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
if (req) {
req.onreadystatechange = processReqChange;
req.open("GET", "models.jsp?cId=300006&mId=TAC24", true);
req.setRequestHeader("Content-Type","text/xml");
req.send();
alert(req.responseXML.xml); //this gives me nothing
}
}

In looking at the following example the Microsoft gives (bottom of
page):

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...B;EN-US;Q290591

I just dont see what could be going wrong here.

I should note that I successfully got the script to work using the
XMLHttpRequest object and the overrideMimeType() method. This works
with FireFox and I think some Mozilla clients, but not with the all
important IE5, which instead uses the XMLHTTP ActiveX control.=

ATLAS And External Javascript

Does ATLAS support the use of external javascript va this syntax

--myPage.aspx--

atlas:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
<Services>
<atlas:ServiceReference
Path="webServices/securityService.asmx" />
</Services>
</atlas:ScriptManager>
....
<script language="javascript" src="js/myScripts.js">

doSomthing();
....

--myScript.js---

function doSomthing()
{
// I GET A UNDEFINED 'securityService' error at this line
securityService.myfunc(returnFunc);
}

the work around I had to do is copy the code from myScript.js to myPage.aspx and then to call it I needed to do this:

setTimeout(doSomthing,600);

I had a problem calling the javascript function when the page is loading. so I had to set a time out or else I get the same undefined error.

Changing External CSS Using JavaScript

Feb 17, 2005

I am looking at ways of altering the appearance of web pages by calling alternate external stylesheets. This has obvious use in catering for accessibility issues.

There are existing sites that offer the facility to change font size, font colour, background colour, but these use server-side code. I would like to do this using client-side code, because I want to intergrate this with an HTML-based virtual learning environment (VLE) that is unlikely to accept server-side code.

I can obviously call a second stylesheet, which overrides that called in the <head> part of the HTML code. However, I cannot do this by user control using an <a href "javascript" ... call.

What is going wrong? As I have indicated in the comments in the file, the 'document.write' statement works in its own right to call a new CSS file. The function also works in its own right. However, the href doesn't do what I expected.

However, that is just the start. If I can get this to work, I would like a way of passing the 'new' stylesheet to other pages, so that the user selects their options once and then sees the same appearance in all pages in the VLE.

External JavaScript For Navigation?

Nov 24, 2005

My website uses only HTML currently. I want to store the universal left navigation HTML in a separate .js file with a link to the stylesheet, and call the .js file from all HTML files. Could you help me do this?

Below are the details:-

One of the files, which contains this left navigation and other content, is: index.htm

The stylesheet is: style.css

The left navigation is below:

<!-- Left Nav: Want to make this an external leftnav.js file -->
<table>
<tr><td class="one"><a href="abc.htm">ABC</a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="two"><a href="xyz.htm">XYZ</a></td></tr>
</table>
<!-- Left Nav: Want to make this an external .js file -->

What will be the leftnav.js file with a link to the style.css file?

What script needs to be placed in the index.htm file?

Loading External JS Before Page Page Load (specific Span Element)

Jul 19, 2010

My goal is to load the JS for a specific element before displaying that element. I integrated a third part script, and it works well. I set the timer here:

The JS is in my heading as <script type="text/javascript" src="countdownpro.js"></script>

About mid-body I have: <span id="countdown1">2010-07-20 00:00:00 GMT+00:00</span> which allows for the setting of a target date to countdown to.

When the page first loads it shows the above long format target time, until the js/meta tags kick in to modify it to just show the actual countdown as 00:00:00.

I have attached countdownpro.js to this post. I tried shifting the function CD_Init() to the top of the script, and also appended it inline with the .html. I tried setting the big external script to "defer", but neither arrangement worked. I also tried placing the src file right at the top.

I would like to have a page on my site containing links to external URLs. When I click on these links, a new window should open with the new URL and some text formatting javascript (or other language) code be applied to it. This would be like loading a new URL and then apply a bookmarklet to it. But I want to be able to do both in one shot. you click on the link, open a new window, and apply the code to the URL. Also, when you open the new window, the location bar should show the external URL, not mine. It doesn't have to necessarily be done with Javascript.
