I would very much like to be able to click to expand a submenu in Superfish, rather than the default hover to expand. How can I achieve this?

I spent way too long writing a buggy and bloated jQuery script that is supposed to allow the sub-menus of a drop-down menu be a dynamic width (i.e. the submenu assumes the width of the widest list item). I am probably missing some base CSS property, surely it cant be this hard? My script I wrote is:
// drop down menu
var setWidth = 2;
var nextSetWidth = 0;
$jQ('.nav li').hover(function(){
var thisList = $jQ(this).parent('ul');
if (thisList.parent('li').length > 0) {
thisList.children('li').each(function(){
var thisSpan = $jQ(this).find('span');
var spanWidth = thisSpan.width();
if (spanWidth > setWidth) {
setWidth = spanWidth;
}});
setWidth = setWidth + 16;
thisList.css('width', setWidth);
}
var nextList = $jQ(this).find('.nav:eq(0)');
if (nextList.parent('li').parent('ul').parent('li').length == 0){
nextList.css('left', '2px');
}
nextList.children('li').each(function(){
var nextThisSpan = $jQ(this).find('span');
var nextSpanWidth = nextThisSpan.width();
if (nextSpanWidth > nextSetWidth) {
nextSetWidth = nextSpanWidth;
}});
nextSetWidth = nextSetWidth + 16;
nextList.css('width', nextSetWidth);
if (nextList.parent('li').parent('ul').parent('li').length > 0){
nextList.css('left', setWidth);
}}, function(){
$jQ(this).find('.nav:eq(0)').css('left','9999em');
setWidth = 2;
nextSetWidth = 0;
});
//End of Drop down menu
The HTML looks something like:
<ul class="nav">
<li><a><span></span></a></li>
<li><a><span></span></a></li>
<li><a><span></span></a>
<ul class="nav">
<li><a><span></span></a></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

Submenu items aren't visible when they are Cufonized. To fix this change superfish.js line 105 to: .find('>ul').hide().css('display','none'); and line 113 to .find('>ul:hidden').css ('display','block');

I'm currently trying to parse through all the children list items within a navigation menu so that I can trim off a trailing "|" character. I'm trying the following but its not working correctly,
$('#nav > li > ul > li').each(function() {
var str = $(this).text();
$(this).text(str.replace("|", ""));
});

I'm struggling around to show submenu on mouseover of menu-div. I found a solution to show each children of one menuitem, but I wont to show the whole submenu-strukture of all menuitems. Here is what I've done till now:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "[URL]">
<html xmlns ="[URL]">
<head>
<meta
http-equiv ="Content-Type"
content ="text/html; charset=utf-8" .....
So when I hover over li.first I will get all submenu-items of the first heading! Is it possible to mouseover the div#navi or the ul#nav to get shown all submenu-items from every menuheading?
I tried something like this, but of course it doesn't workjQuery(document).ready(function(){
jQuery(".first ul").hide();
jQuery(".#nav").hover(function () {
jQuery(this).children(".first ul").toggle("slow");
});
});

But here is the tricky part, when I click on a menu item (in the submenu) I want the submenu to display the items on which the page is.For example the menu looks like this:home
page1
page1a
page1b

I am new to jQuery & Superfish, but it seemd like the most logical way to do a quick prototype for a menusystem. I am trying to create a verertical menu system (using superfish-vertical). However, I'd like to tweak the behaviour of the submenu, and have been unsuccessful so far. Here's what the current solution does (straight out of the box) assume menu item 3 is hovered over:

I'm almost done customizing the Superfish jQuery menu to fit my web site theme. I have all of the menu hover and submenu hover styles in place, but I'm having a problem with the color of the top-level menu item's font when the submenu is expanded. The active top menu item's background matches the hover color, but when I hover overa submenu item, the font color reverts back to the original (non-hovered) color. How do I get the top level menu item's color to match its hover color when the submenu is expanded?
The relevant portions of my CSS are as follows:
.sf-menu a, .sf-menu a:visited { /* visited pseudo selector so IE6 applies text colour*/
color:#8C1C39;
}.sf-menu a.sfHover {
color:#FFFFFF;
}.sf-menu li {
background:transparent;
}.sf-menu li li {
background:#FFFFFF;
}.sf-menu li li li {
background:#9AAEDB;
}.sf-menu li:hover, .sf-menu li a:hover {
color: #FFFFFF;
background:#00207B;outline:0;
}.sf-menu a:focus, .sf-menu a:active,
.sf-menu li li a:hover, .sf-menu li.sfHover {
background:#8C1C39;
color: #FFFFFF;
outline:0;
}

I have inherited some code that changes the behavior or menu links with submenus to open the submenu but I need it to both open the submenu and go to the link location.
Here is the code:
$('#leftNav #menu li a').click(
function() {
$('#leftNav #menu li a').removeClass('selectedAccordion');
$(this).addClass('selectedAccordion');
$('#leftNav #menu ul.currentnav li a').removeClass('selectedAccordion');
$('#leftNav #menu li ul li a').removeClass('selectedAccordion');
//$(this).parent('li').addClass('selectedAccordion');
var checkElement = $(this).next(); if((checkElement.is('ul')) && (checkElement.is(':visible'))){
return false;
}
if((checkElement.is('ul')) && (!checkElement.is(':visible'))) {
if(checkElement.parent().parent().parent().is(':visible')) {
checkElement.slideDown('normal');
return false;
}
$('#leftNav #menu ul:visible').slideUp('normal');
checkElement.slideDown('normal');
return false;
}}
How do I put back the behavior to open the submenu AND go to the link location? I found I could add location.href = $(this).attr('href'); and go to the correct, but then the submenus slideUp and are hidden again. I can't figure out why changing the page closes the menus.

[URL]As I hover over Item 15, I want it to be like, "Okay, this list I'm about to display is going to be too long, so let's disregard the 'top: 10px' line in the CSS and instead have the submenu sit with its last item right at the bottom aligned with the bottom of the gradient." That way, we know for sure that the submenu will not reach past the height of the body, and the last item will be visible. The bottom of the last item's cell should "hug" the bottom of the page/gradient.

Trying to create a submenu with a tables and divs from a db, when the mouse is
rolled onto a item a submenu would expand using onmouseover and closed again using
onmouseout.
I got everything worked out but the only thing I cant get to work
is on the <div> that expands the main menu, the onmouseout is being activated
when the mouse is being moved over the sub menus which are the
<tr> and not the main menu <div>.
This is the basic jist of the code that I have a problem with.
<div is out')">
<table width="117" height="78" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td width="117" height="19" bgcolor="#006699"> Sub menu 1</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td height="20" bgcolor="#006699">Sub menu 2</td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>
I've looked on some over submenus that others have created and they use <div>
and <span>, but same problem I have gotten. Would anyone tell me a way of making this work?

problem is that If I point the mouse curser away from the whole menu the
submenu is still shown, obviously if I click once with the mouse outside the
menu the submenu disappears. So I need some kind of remove-submenu function
when the mouse pointer is not pointing on menusubmenu....

My menu navigation(Home, Hosting Solution, etc..)
1. The submenu links need to be centered in the middle of the div instead of aligned to the left.
2. Can the submenu links have a rounded box appear under them, instead of being underlined links. Like these at the top: [url]
3: The top tab needs to stay gray/active/on when the mouse is moved down to the submenu or when it is the active button.
Here is the link of the site [url]

I am trying to understand somecode. I don't think I am understanding everything correctly. Can someone confirm or add to my understanding?
Here is the code, below is my explanation:
- CODE 1 - is saying if the the class subnav_dd is called on an anchor tag on a li, then make the function in the if statement "live". (Live in a sense binds the function to the condition, but unlike bind it allows the condition to be used more then once. ) So if the class subnav_dd is the parent, and has a class of .dis then prevent anything below it from firing. CSS - If code 1 is true, then I will only get the first li to fire, the remaining ones will not.
- CODE 2 - This one is a little tricky. Function ToggleOptions takes 3 variables (target, array, state). The condition is if the div subnav + target have siblings, then check to see how many siblings are there. Put the amount of siblings into an array, then check the state of each sibling. I don't completely the rest of it.
I think if the div subnav is called and something is found in the array then the class dis is either added or removed. Then what? I don't understand why I still need the else that adds a class to #subnav_ +.target
