JQuery :: Detect Browser (ie - IE6-7) And Open A Display Message
Jun 8, 2011
Is there any jquery script that would detect a browser. What I exactly mean is when a visitor opens a website, the script detects the browser and if it's IE6-7, the message to upgrade/change the browser is displayed. It'd be nice if the rest of the screen got blurred, as it is in some jquery photo galleries.

I want to use jquery to detect what type of browser you are using and display a link to a .wmv file if you are on IE or display a link to a .mp4 file if you are any other type of browser.I have this script declaration in my <head> section.
<
script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js"></script>
In the body section I have the following
<div id="block"></div>
<
script type="text/javascript">[code]....
Nothing is being output on the page at all. I've tried to patch this together from various example on various web sites. How can I make this work?

In a nutshell I need to know when the user opened a new tab. I lookedaroundand I can't find an answer to it. Most of the browsers keep the same session id for the new tab, which in turn makes my application not happy.

I have a classified listing application (php) that shows an alert message on the main page to let the user know if there was an error, if the listing was entered, if a required field was left blank, etc.
the simple jquery code is:
$('#alert').fadeIn("slow");
setTimeout(function() {
$("#alert").fadeOut(3000);
}, 4000);
the alert msg. displays whenever the page is loaded. However, if someone navigates with the forward or back buttons in the browser, or reloads the page, the alert message displays again.
I am pulling my hair out for a solution that shows the alert only once and then does not show an alert again until a new message is generated.

How can I change this so that the alert message is shown in the browser (no pop-up) using jquery?

I'm having troubles trying to detect the browser close event. (in FF or IE) To do this I'm using these events: "unload" and "beforeunload", but both are more or less the same, I mean, when I refresh the page or navigate away thru some link, these events catch the same action, but I just need to catch the browser close event, no the page refresh, no the click thru, just the browser close...

I'm relatively new to jQ and would like to determine if a named window is already open. If it is then I want to change focus to that window/tab. The scenario is this. I have a link in App1 that opens a new window to an already existing linked (related) web form in App2. If the user forgets they have that window open in App2 and clicks the same link in App1 as before (to open the related form in App2,) it opens a window that is not the same window as the original window. I need App1 to detect if a window already exists in the browser of the same name and if so, change the browser focus to it.

A website I'm designing vgdesign.net/thc has a form in the footer. It functions how I want right now (to my knowledge) except for the fact that after a user submits a form and it passes validation, I want a message to be displayed that says "Thank You". I have a class created for this in my stylesheet but I don't know how to trigger it when the form is sent successfully. Essentially, I would like the result to look like this:
If the form doesn't pass validation, I want it to not display until the users fix the errors in the validation pop ups and resubmit. The php script that sends the form contents to the specified email is at the top of my index.php page. The validation tool I'm using is called jquery inline form validations (found here: [URL] How can I have that success message pop up when the form was successfully submitted?

In the current world of browsers, there are quite some different brands, IE, Firefox, Opera, Netscape, etc.
Is there a better (more widely acceptted way) to detect which browser I am using?
Someone may use: navigator object and check the indexOf, while others may use the object detection such as document.all, window.opera,...

Even I am trying the browser close event for cross browser and this should trigger only when X button is clicked or page is refreshed. Here's the code pasted above which I am using but it only works in IE. I know the issue is because of window.events and ClientX/ClientY. my code to make it work in all browsers? This is very urgent and have been striving since 3 days...
*Please Note: Current code is working in IE only and to check you have to close the browser window or refresh the page with mouse click

I've seen plenty of browser detection scripts but they all seem to be slightly different and don't really fit my needs. I have various places where if the browser is IE I'd like to display [this html code] else [display this]. For example, if a browser is IE I want to use this CSS file
otherwise use a different one and if it's IE make this cell x pixels high else make it y pixels high. I'm sure this is easy ....

my CSS style is:
.text{font-family: Gill Sans MT, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;}
But Gill Sans is by nature much smaller than Verdana at the same pixel size.
So IF the browser does not have Gill Sans, I want to change the font size to 10pixels.
Is it impossible?
