JQuery :: Chaining Function Syntax?
Mar 5, 2010
just a quick question about syntax.What's the difference between the following functions?
$("#menu li").hover(
function(event) {
if ($(this).is(".active")) return;
[code]...
If you notice, at the end of the first hover function, there is an excess (), whereas on the second, there isn't. They are both functional. I was just curious as to why this is added sometimes and other times not.

I have seen the following methods to call a function in jQuery.
Case 1: $.validator.methods[method].call
Case 2: $.validator.methods[method](parameter1)
Where can I find the reference document for the usage of [] to call a function in jQuery.

What is the proper syntax for something like that?

My Javascript is very limited, but I get on pretty well with Jquery (I love it!) so some of what I say here may be seriously flawed I've done alot of searching on this but not found anything that fits what I need (I'd rather write and understand my own code than use a plugin) What a want is a simple function (or other means) of replicating the callback function for lengthy animations (so I don't end up with a load of functions within functions within functions) So I want to be able to animate (or change) a multiple number of elements IN TURN - ie once the previous animation has completed - eg
div1.animate({property: value}, 'fast');
div2.animate({property: value}, 'fast');
div3.css({property: value});
div1.animate({property: value}, 'fast');
div1.css({property: value});
div3.animate({property: value}, 'fast');
I know I can do this with callbacks, but as I said, this gets messy Can I stick these in an array and pass to a function to manage this (and if so how baring in mind my limited Javascript

I've discovered, that remove() function can't be chained, as it runs before other functions in chain.
Is it done on purpose? I believe that calling remove() as a callback, is much more clumsy, than chaining it. Am I wrong?

When I click the background image, f1 gets called and executes as expected, but f2 doesn't get called after the animation in f1.
Drupal.behaviors.director = function(context) {

var y = ev.pageY;

the following code works fine, but the span is NOT a child of the Li element. Instead it is a childof UL. If I remove the .data() from the chain, that SPAN is created as a child node, like it should be.
$(".mainmenu-filter-content ul")
.append($("<li id='flt_" + data.id + "'></li>")
.data("filterdata", data))
[code]....

Sorry but I can't get the very first tutorial to work. I put the custom.js in a test_jr directory in htdocs. I also put the starterkit.html file in the same directory. I copied the contents of jquery-1.4.4.min.js into a jquery.js file also in the same directory. Then I did the custom.js page shown here:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$("a").click(function() {
[Code]...
I tried clicking on the [URL] and I get the starterkit.html page. If I click on the "some link" it doesn't do anything. What am I missing? There are syntax errors in my editor starting on the line with the asterisks* Why is there an error there? It looks like it closes the click function?

In pseudo code, here's what I'm trying to do with some text:
shrinkText.changeText.EnlargeText.
The jQuery I'm using for this:
$('span#calendarNumber').animate({
color: '#999',
fontSize: '12px'
}, 500 ).html($('#calculatorSampleInPopup1').val()).animate({
color: '#900',
fontSize: '40px'
}, 2500, 'easeOutElastic' );
What happens visually upon triggering this is this:
- HTML content changes
- text shrinks
- text enlarges
I think what is happening is that the first animation is suppose to span 500 (miliseconds?) but jQuery doesn't pause for that, it just starts the animating and goes immediate to the second event which is to change the text. In otherwords, I think it's triggering correctly, it's just not producing the visual effect I want. Is the solution to put a pause of some sort between the first two events? If so, what's the proper method?

There's something I can't understand. If I do:
Why does jQuery return elem1 and not the created element ? Returning the created element does much more sense to me since:
a) I already got a reference to elem1 if I need to do further manipulation.
b) I got a references to the 'div' element I've just added.
The way jQuery does it, I'll never get a references to the element I've added.
Can anybody clarify this for me? Is it a 'jquery way' to work this?

I haven't used jquery for quite a while and I'm trying to simply alter out the text in a div with an ID of "test" but I'm running into trouble.
Code:
var mytest = $("#test");
alert(mytest);
I'm sure it's because I've selected the div as a whole, but I've tried selecting the first child with no success.
I suppose I should first chain in a "p" selector, then select the first item, but I'm not quite sure how to do it. What I think is my closest attempt is as follows:
Code:
var mytest = $("#test").("p")[0];
alert(mytest);

I've been programming in jQuery for some time now, and for the first time, I came across an issue where I am writing out the location of a TD with an ID="step" to get the innerHTML with html(). I receive a null value, but when I use td:first within the chain of elements, it works.Has anyone experienced this issue or have any idea why this is not working? I've tried other TDs with diffirent IDs within the same row, and the same null result happens.Is there a possible limitation to the numbe of IDs used within the chaining of the $() call?

I have just written some jQuery code that had to navigate to a parent sibling then 3rd child. My code was
$(this).parent().next('ul').children('li').children('span').children('input').attr('checked', 'checked');
Is there any way to optimize this I thought this would work
$(this).parent().next('ul').children('li span input').attr('checked', 'checked');

I had a look at sIFR.js code after parsing it and I have a question
about function syntax. For example
var f=function(){
// statements here
}();
What is the purpose if the second set of parentheses following the
closing brace? Is the intention to execute the function immediately
after it has been defined?
Most functions in sIFR.js do not have this syntax, but a few do.

i copied the code from the book like this:$('a[@href^="mailto:"]').addClass('mailto'); to try to change the links which start with "mailto" to the new class "mailto" but there's a error reported: uncaught exception: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: [@href^="mailto:"]

so i wrote this slider with some help from an admin, everything works as I would like it to but I'm trying to make it a plugin so i need to tighten up a certain part of the code:
(function( $ ){
$.fn.jmSlider = function() {
// get total width of all li elements in the slider
var wrapWidth = 0;
[code]....
what i would like to do is instead of using "li:first" and "li:last", i would like to use first-child and last-child so the element doesn't need to be a li, in can be anything that is the direct child of the parent container.

I have a text string that is a complete html doc. How do I tell jquery to parse that?
Variable theDoc holds the other html doc.
I tried:
var doc = $(theDoc);
If it is "this" doc it looks like: var x = $('table:contains('test')).html(); I tried: var x = doc.find('table:contains('resume')).html();
It keeps saying something is null.
So what is the syntax to look inside another doc , not the one the code is currently in?

I keep getting a syntax error on line 3 and 4 of this very simple script. Normally firebug would give me enough info to fix this but jQuery escapes me. I can see no reason for the errors.
<script type="text/javascript">
$(".shipping-switch[name='shipping_switch']").click(function(){
var selector = "div#sub-address";
if($(this).val() === "1"){
$(selector).slideDown("fast");
} else {
$(selector).slideUp("fast");
}});
</script>

I'm still trying to get to grips with jQuery syntax,I'm working on an accordion-style menu and I'm struggling to get a hide behaviour to work.
Basically I want to hide all of the controls within my specified parent control which have an ID starting with "accordionBody_" except the first one. (So that the first pane is expanded and the rest are hidden on load.) I'm using the following:
$('#' + containerId).find("div[id^='accordionBody_']:not(:first)").hide();
But it's not working - it just hides all of the controls.
