JQuery :: Setting CSS Style - Turn User Select Off For Unique ID
Oct 24, 2010
Are there limitation on what can be set for css styles? I have a script which sets a unique id but I wanted to turn user-select off for that item. I thought this would work:
var
id = 'wrapper_'
+(new Date().getTime());
var
wrapper = $('<div id='+id+'></div>'
);
$(id).css({'-webkit-user-select: none;'});
The error I get is:
Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token }

My understanding had been that $.css("width") would return the original user selected style, eg "100%" or "10em", and $.width() returned the computed width, always in "px". Not so, following the code through for .css(), it calls something called getComputedStyle and the only difference between the two functions turns out to be a post-fix of "px" on the .css() result - not very useful. I need to know whether my user has called me with a proportional dimension, or a fixed one. How to tell with jQuery?

This recursive menu is built with ColdFusion and then Javascript is used to turn the style display on or off. The problem I'm running into is this. The menu currently has 4 levels. MicrosoftMicrosoft TechnicalDynamicSystem CenterWindows ServerHyper V The menu is collapsed and as you mouse over an item that has child elements it expands. The problem happening now is the menu loads expanded only for the 'Microsoft' element. (note this is the only menu tree that has 4 levels).
So it looks like this when loaded initially. MicrosoftMicrosoft TechnicalDynamicSystem CenterWindows Server When you mouseover 'Microsoft' it then expands the 'Hyper V' menu item underneathe Windows Server. Mousing over 'Microsoft' should open 'Microsoft Technical', etc... I imagine the code doesn't support that many levels because if 'Hyper V' is moved out and put under 'Microsoft Technical' as a child the menu works fine.

Let's say you have two elements, and you know their IDs; is there a way to select them both at the same time; something like $('#test #test2')?I realize I could just select them both on two different lines and apply the same function, or use class or something to track them down; but sometimes I just want to grab two elements by ID and do the same thing to them. I assume I'm just missing the syntax.

Suppose I have something similar to this HTML (this is not my exact HTML, rewritten to simplify):
<a onclick="ShowHide(); return false;" href="#">show/hide</a>
<div>
<div id="summary">Summary of info below</div>
<div id="enclosure" style="display:none;">Information</div>
</div>
<a onclick="ShowHide(); return false;" href="#">show/hide</a>
<div>
[Code]...
These DIVS are full of information populated from a MSQL db. So the DIV names cannot be unique. I have this jQuery code:
[Code]....
This code actually works perfectly except for one major headache. When I click the 'hide/show' link on any of these - the only one that hides or shows is the first set. After research I feel like I'll need to use the .parent() selector or (this) somewhere but I feel like I've tried every combination.

I'm trying to change a div (#box) from being floated left to not being floated (i.e. being a normal block-level element) when a link (#move) is clicked. I'm doing this:
window.onload = function() {
var z = document.getElementById('move');
z.onclick = function() {
document.getElementById('box').style.float = 'none'
document.getElementById('box').style.width = À¡px'
}
}
However, the div remains floated (confirmed by the handy FF web developer extension). The width does change, so it seems my problem is with the style.float bit. What am I doing wrong?

I have a couple of layers that are hidden.
When an image is moused over, I want to show the appropriate layer,
then hide it on mouseOut.
The problem is, I get an error telling me "document.all[...].style is
not an object" for whatever layer I have created first. It seems as
though when the second layer is created, it overwrites the first one ....

given a cell from a table...
function Tbl_GetCell(tbl, row, col)
{
var theRow = tbl.getElementsByTagName("tr")[row];
return theRow.getElementsByTagName("td")[col];
}
I can set attributes like width, height, and align, but how can I set cell style info?
cell = GetCell(tbl,row,col)
these work fine... cell.align = "center"; cell.height = 22;
but this doesn't... cell.style = "font-weight: bold; text-decoration: blink"

I have some simple code to have one div bounce around inside another. It works fine on Firefox and IE, but for some reason in Opera and Chrome it only moves left to right.
This suggests that Chrome and Opera allow you to dynamically set style.left but not style.top. This seems odd to me.
why this won't run as intended on Chrome or Opera?
Here's a very simplified version of my code to demonstrate the problem:
Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>

I have a ColdFusion page with a select drop down list. On submit, I'm storing the value in a cfparam and trying to use jQuery to auto select that particular option. Currently I'm using :contains but this is unacceptable because it selects the last item that contains the cfparam.
$("option:contains('<cfoutput>#form.company_type#</cfoutput>')").attr('selected', 'selected');
Is there something like this:
$("option").equals('<cfoutput>#form.company_type#</cfoutput>')").attr('selected', 'selected');
[Code]....
I willconsider other alternatives to accomplishing my objective.

I have a pop-up window system on my site that shows an absolutely-positioned div over the entire page as a "pop up" of sorts when someone clicks a link. I use this simple line of Javascript to disable page scrolling when a "pop up" box is opened by a user:
document.documentElement.style.overflow = document.body.style.overflow = 'hidden';
The problem is that when a user is scrolled down on a page and clicks a link to bring up one of my pop up boxes, when the overflow is set to 'hidden' to disable scrolling, the page "jolts" back up to the top (similar as to what would happen if someone clicked an <a> element with href="#" ). However, the links are not actually links, but span tags that are programmed with JS to trigger the scrollbar to be disabled when clicked, so that is not the culprit here. I've narrowed the problem down to that one line of code which I posted earlier. Apparently, setting the documentElement overflow style to 'hidden' scrolls the user to the top of the page automatically along with "disabling" the scroll bar on the page.
I am wondering if there is a way to prevent this jolting to the top of the page each time that JS code is triggered. I don't want users to have to scroll back down to where they were each time they open a pop up dialogue box on my site, as this would be detrimental for usability purposes.

I have a single select dropdown in my application which is hidden for one type of user group. Before a user from this group can save any data, I have to explicitly select the default value of this dropdown for him as this dropdown is not visible to him.
Issue: In IE, this default value doesn't get selected as it is not populated but works fine in Firefox. Is this a jQuery bug?

I'm setting up a fictitious shopping page which uses cookies to remember what a user has selected. The products are photographs that the user can select either framed or unframed versions and I'm trying to put a confirmation box if the user actually requests framed and unframed versions of the same photograph. The code I'm using actually worked before I tried to add this extra functionality but I can't work out how to test for this extra bit. Here's my code and it sets cookies with names as either lulworth01 for the unframed version or lulworth01f for the framed version. The bits that work are in black and my extra code for this test is in red.
function getCookie(name){
var index = cart.indexOf(name + "=");
if(index == -1)
return null;
index = cart.indexOf("=", index) +1;
var endstr = cart.indexOf(";",index);
if (endstr == -1) endstr = cart.length;
return unescape(cart.substring(index, endstr));
} function setCookie(name) {
if ((name.charAt(name.length-1)='f') && (getCookie(name.substring(0,10))!=null)) {
confirm("You seem to have placed orders for both a mounted and framed image of the same photograph.
Is that OK?");
} else {
alert("Thank you.
Your basket has been updated.");
x=parseInt(getCookie(name)) || 0;
y=x+1;
var today = new Date();
var expiry = new Date(today.getTime()+28*24*60*60*1000); // plus 28 days
document.cookie=name+"="+y+";expires="+expiry.toGMTString();
cart = document.cookie;
}}

This one is throwing me off! Either I am making a stupid mistake or I'm doing it totally wrong I have an array, and I am trying to select unique values from it and assign it to another array. Here is the code:
Code:
var flag;
for (i=0;i<=pdfs.length-1;i++)
{
flag = 1;
for (j=0;j<=pdfs2.length-1;j++)
[Code]...
The problem is that the if (pdfs2[j] == pdfs[i]) statement ends up never being true. There are URL's to pdf files in the array. On the other side, if there is a much easier way to select unique values from an array, please feel free to point it out.

disable select until user puts mark in check box. Then enable select.I have two select box's on a page. The first asks what product, the second is based on the first and presents a list of pdf's according to which product the user selected. (yes, multi dimensional)What I have works fine, but now i need to make the user put a check mark in a check box before the First SELECT box becomes enabled/available.So basically, when they agree, they can get the download.Here are my select boxes.
HTML Code:
<form>
<select name="category" style="width:180px"></select>
<select name="site" style="width:180px" onchange="openLink(this.value)"></select>[code]....
(ignore the The 'open' button. It's there in case the default option is what the user wants, so they don't have reselect via the select box.)
1. How do I disable the select boxes by default on page load?
2. How do I detect that the user has put a tick in and the enable the disabled Select box?

I'm trying to set a cookie when a user clicks a hyper link.
Do you think I should prevent the default behavior of pressing a link first, and then set the cookie?
Or could I just set the cookie on a hyper link click event, and hope the client sets the cookie, before they are directed to another page.

The following will set the SELECT box by the index value, selecting the second value in the dropdown box
var varyear = 1
document.myform.year.options[varyear].selected = true;
however i want to set it like this...
var varyear = 2006
document.myform.year.options[varyear].selected = true;
...to set the SELECTED value to 2006...which doesn't work
