Setting SELECT Option Value
Jul 19, 2007
In JS can you set the value of a SELECT dropdown box by text value, not index value?
The following will set the SELECT box by the index value, selecting the second value in the dropdown box
var varyear = 1
document.myform.year.options[varyear].selected = true;
however i want to set it like this...
var varyear = 2006
document.myform.year.options[varyear].selected = true;
...to set the SELECTED value to 2006...which doesn't work

I have a little bit of a complex script where I have a <SELECT> that is pre-loaded with options that are loaded from a database in PHP. But, when this page is loaded the <SELECT> is disabled, and is only enabled when an onChange() is triggered on another <SELECT> that is situated on the same page.
Anyway, when I enable the <SELECT> I would like to have one of the <OPTION>'s selected (instead of having a blank <SELECT>).
The line of JavaScript that I have so far (but isn't really getting me anywhere) to try to select an <OPTION> when the <SELECT> is enabled is as follows...
document.forms['edit_consultant'].elements[con_elements[j]].options[selectedIndex].value = consultants[conid][j];
..where I am guessing that the 'options[selectedIndex].value' will select the <OPTION> with the value of consultants[conid][j] to be selected.

I'm using the following code to remove an option from a select control based on a selection in a different select control and the option text in the select option that is being removed. The code works as I want it to, but I would prefer to use the option value for identifying the option to remove instead of using the option text. I've tried several different ways to do this, but can not find the proper syntax.

I have a drop down menu with options. Is there a faster way to display a tool tip based on the value of the <option> tag other than having to manually set title="" for each <option> tag?

n the following script, I am trying to set selection to a select
option element, that is newly created within the script. It works fine
on IE installations on Windows 2000 and some XP machines. But on some
XP machines, the selection doesn't happen and it defaults to the first
element in the options array. Has anybody come across this problem ?
Any known workarounds?

I'm trying set an option with a certain value to selected. I'm using this: $('#mySelect option[value="' + myValue + '"]').attr('selected', 'selected'); This has worked in another piece of code I wrote, but now IE 6 and 8 are throwing an error (in the debug bar). It's something similar to this: "The selected attribute couldn't be set. Unknown error." Anyone ever experienced something similar?

I'm using Prototype and scriptaculous either, but here it is:
I have two select areas and scripts to transfer items between the two.
Everything works great in FF, but in IE when an option gets removed it
removes the entire select area. Has anyone ever seen something like
this before?

According to [URL] intended way for jQuery to change dynamically the selected option of a dropdown select control isassigningthe desired text instead of the value. I found this way veryinconvenient (data structures usually deal with value codes, not value descriptions) and it seems to work only sometimes.
Trying different options I came out with this approach that seems to do the job so
far:
function setSelect(pID,pSelectedValue)
{
$('#'+pID + ' option:selected').removeAttr('selected');

I have a form that uses jeditable to edit-in-place several fields and select boxes. Everything is working great. Now I need to a way to add a new option to the select list. What I would like is the user select "Add New..." from the select list that would pop-up a dialog window where several fields are filled in. When the form is saved the select field is updated with the new ID and description. I use Facebox for pop-up windows to display notes when the user clicks on a topic. I know Facebox can be used to display a form. It would be ideal to use this ability when creating a new option for the select box.

I have a google map which gives directions in different languages based on a select box selection. Google gives directions in English as a default, and if you make the selection AFTER the directions are displayed, then it changes languages. All good so far.
But if you make the language selection first, it still displays in English and then you have to select your option again. What I'd like is to say be able to choose "Italian" and for the directions to come up in Italian on the first hit.
My test page is here (http:[url]...) - you can click on "to here" or "from here" and enter "alyzia, greece" in the input box to see what I mean. I'll post the relevant bits of code below, too. locale is the variable the API uses for language selection.
var to_htmls = [];
var from_htmls = [];
var locale;[code]....

If one selects Merge, then i want another form displayed with input fileds etc, but if one select Nuke then a different form will be displayed and if one selects the last option then both above forms will be displayed. In order to design a custom select element look in my site, I was messing with the css and opacity value to fade the actual select box and put a background image in a div right above the select element. The functionality of the select box is preserved no matter if opacity is set to 0, so I was able to accomkplish my goal.But, that worked for every other browser around except IE6.Is there a please someone there that encountered this problem and possibly knows some kind of workaround?

How do i select an option in a combo box? i have tried looking on the internet but dont really know what i should be searching for. what i want to happen is that when a function is called
a line of code will select a specific option in a combo box. something like:
//excuse the dodgy syntax
function select_combo() {
cb_1.select[3] //where option 3 will be selected (or 4 if first index
is 0)
}
the combo box would be something like:
<select>
<option>First</option>
<option>Second</option>
<option>Third</option>
</select>
The function would change the selection in the combo box.
