Is this possible with JQuery? I have the following code which I think Should do this, but it's not working :/These are two different functions which I've been testing, and the html element is supposed to create a dropdown list via some PHP which will have the option "Other" within it. Unfortunately, I have no idea exactly how to turn "Other" into a text box when the user clicks, and I've been spending a lot of time on this already.

var value = $(this + 'option:selected').text();
console.log(value);
)};
I just want to get the text of the select element I just changed. However, this is returning the text of the selected value of ALL the select elements on my page.

i have in my code a box called "box1". When the user clicks inside the "box1", a function called "showWidth()" returns the element and the wifth of the element. The function has 2 paramaters:
1) ele (element)
2) w (width)
in this line, how am i supposed to use the "ele" with text.() ?? ele.text("The width for the " + ele + " is " + w + "px."); /* PROBLEM HERE!!!! */
In order for this to work i do: $("#box1").text("The width for the " + ele + " is " + w + "px."); but if i have many different boxes with different ids, i can't create so many functions and have:
$("#box2").text(
$("#box3").text(
$("#box4").text(
$("#box5").text(

I've got a little jquery bit to add some behavior to linked mp3s. You see this here: [URL]. Basically, jquery adds a speak icon and a player when the link is clicked, and the link title flies off and fades to the right:
[code] jQuery('a[href$=mp3]:not(.amplink)')
.wrap('<div class="mp3_span">' + '</div>')
.addClass("mp3_title")
.attr("title", "Click to Play")
.before('<img src="' + anarchy_url + '/images/114.png"
title="Click to listen" class="speaker" style="margin:' + mp3imgmargin + '"/>')
.each(function awesome() { .....
This works more or less how it would like it in all browsers except ie7. There the block that is created for the expanding text pushes everything down, even though the link are given a position:absolute declaration.
The pertinent css:
[code]
div.mp3_span {margin-left:90px; width:600px; position:relative;
display: inline !important; height:1.5em !important;}
a.mp3_title {font: oblique small-caps normal 1em/1.5em Arial, sans-
serif; display: inline !important; position: absolute !important;
cursor: pointer; width:500px; outline: none;}a.mp3_title:hover
{cursor: pointer; outline: none;}
a.mp3_title:active {outline: none;-moz-outline-style: none;}
img.speaker {border:none !important ;cursor:pointer; position:static !
important; vertical-align:top; }[/code]
I can't seem to do no matter what css I apply, and, of course, I' rather not hack the jquery script. So again - how can I keep the text animation without having the following elements getting pushed down?

I am trying to detect the DOM element on a unkown web page from thecurrent selected text on that page.Which means: I select text on a web page and then I would like to getthe dom element to which this text belongs.What I came up with was something like that: (imagin we selected theword John on that page....)var array = $("*:contains('John')"); ---> get all domelements that contain the text 'John'But, instead of returning all dom elements that contain 'John' , itreturns only the path from the HTML element to the P element thatcontains the text 'John'. (HTML->Body->P)Did I miss something ? Is there a complete different way to accomplish

I'm trying to read (and then change) the text on two buttons in my
user interface:
<button class="primary approve">Approve selected</button>
<button class="primary reject">Reject selected</button>
Now depending on how many checkboxes (elsewhere) are selected, I want to change the text to something like "Approve 4 selected" I'm tried in vain to acess:
$("button.primary").each(function(){
console.log( $('this').text() );//fails
console.log( $('this').html() );//fails
});
and for completeness sake I also tried $(this).value -- but of course it returns the .value attribute of the button. 2 questions: How do I access the text and change it?

I'm trying to simply replace a certain string from the contents of an element, I tried this:
<div id="errorCont">Microsoft and Apple</div>
var ErrorContText=$("#errorCont").html();
ErrorContText=ErrorContText.replace("Apple","No one");
$("#errorCont").html(ErrorContText);
So the div SHOULD now say "Microsoft and No one", but it's not working.

You can't select the 'text' part of an 'a' element with css, e.g. in the statement <a>some text </a> you can't use a css attribute selector a[text = "some text"]{} to style the 'a' element. You can select all named attributes such as HREF, TITLE, etc. Does jquery's .attrib map strictly to the css usage or is there some way I can match on that part of an 'a' element?
I need this because a menu list I'm working with doesn't by default require a TITLE element so I can't assume I can match on this attribute.

I found something with $("#myid").html() to get this, but I am not sure how to use it, really tried but I am a freshman.

I'm trying to bend my mind to insert a <div class="image_container"/> before the text in an list element
<li>text1</li>
<li>text2</li>
<li>text3</li>
should become:
<li><div class="image_container"></div>text1</li>
<li><div class="image_container"></div>text2</li>
<li><div class="image_container"></div>text3</li>
$('li', this).before('<div class="image_container"></div>')
makes<div class="image_container"></div><li>text1</li>
I tried other things, but I think I'm overlooking an obvious command.

Is there a way (selector) that would allow me to select an element by exact mach of containing text. example:
<div>
This is some text
</div>
<div>
This
</div>
Lets say i want to select only the second div
$("div:contains('This')")...
okay, it would select it, but...it would also select the first one. I could iterate through each div and check if the text is matching but that's kinda dirty way of doing this. Is there any selector which would allow me to do this without iteration?
