JQuery :: Browser Differences In Handling Xml File Structures?
May 13, 2009
I am having a problem with a script that I am writing and I believe it is centered within a piece of jQuery code. I have some code like this (simplified slightly):
$.get('news/testfeed.xml', function(data) {
$('record', data).each(function() {
var $link = $('<a></a>')
.attr('href', $('link', this).text())
[Code].....

Currently I'm developping an application with RoR and jQuery. Is the first time I try to use this wonderful library so I'm still a little naive Right now I'm having a problem that I have no idea how to solve. Documentation, google, etc have been useless for me in this point (probably because I'm not searching the right terms) So I'm creating an invitation system: simply, a form where you put an email address and when you hit submit it makes an ajax call. The server should answer with some data such 'how many invitations the user have left', possible errors and (if in development enviroment) the url for the invitation (debuggin purposes), everything coded in json.
The problem is that sometimes when sending an invitation firefox pops me up with a download dialog suggesting to save an "application/json" file with all the data that the server processed. My jQuery script should be taking care of handling it and it is not. I have told Rails to render the answer in json format: render :json => message.to_json message is a hash with a format similar to {:error => "There was an error, sorry", :invitations_left => current_user.invitations_left} And I have also specified jQuery the type expected in the return of the call:

I have a document with a parent element that has mousedown,mouseup and mousemove events registered to it. The parent element has some child elements as well. I observe inconsistent behaviours between browser types when I hold the mouse button down, move the pointer and release the button.
ie7 - mouseup fires when over a child or parent
op9 - mouseup fires only when over the parent
ff2 - mouseup fires only over a child or parent but only if the pointer has moved since the mousedown occured

I am returning the following to $getJSON() and not getting any results:
{"QC":["x","y","z"],"RM":[{"DEFAULT":"default_project1"},{"DEFAULT2":"default_project2"},{"DEFAULT":"default_project3"}]}
In the "RM" array there are three objects, each a single name/value pair. The name of the array[0] object ("DEFAULT") is identical to the name of the array[2] object. No results are returned by the getJSON call. Since each object is a separate array value, there shouldn't be any object name collision problems. Note that if I change the name of the array[2] object to "DEFAULT3", the data structure is handled properly.

On my site i use a lot of features that are unsupported by older browsers, and right now it looks pretty stupid when the features are only partially shown. So i was wondering if there's a way of making the browser look to different css files depending on which browser and version it is. For example, css3 gradient backgrounds are supported in firefox 3.6 or something, but not in 3.0. All the hacks out there is to 3.*, so it changes for the allready working 3.6 too if i hack it. I want to controll it so that i have a specific css file for the none-supporting version and lower and one for the supporting and above. I looked at a bad browser plugin (because it has some of the basic features im looking for)

actually i am working on a project "random password generator". What basically is to be done in this project is to generate user password for the username randomly he has provided. Then, this password is to be stored in a text file in the following manner
UserName Password
ABCD JU12H6
Sdjksj HJudfdsfd
Now my problem is that every time I just try to generate a new password, either a new file is made or the heading is rewritten again and again or if I just try to change the variables true and false, then the username and password headings are not printed. Please help. If someone knows how to do this using if-else method then please tell me, how it can be done? The code is attached.

i'm using URL... to load and preview music on my page.It all works really well, when you write pure static html code with just [code]And it will automaticly transform that url into a working custom-player. Done with the soundcloud api.But when i use $.getJSON and dynamicly get down a list of urls that i try to insert with:[code]*side-note(it's the same result with $('#addbtn').click, just wanted to try live as i hoped it would update the elements upon being added. But did not work out.)The url gets inserted into sc-player class div, but the rest never gets transformed into the custom-player with the sc-player.js script.It just remains an ordinary a href. It is as if the sc-player.js never is being "loaded" which i can understand why it won't. Question is how do i get it to successfully transform my urls that are being dynamicly added with javascript into the custom-player instead of just the url to the song?

I'm familiar with Java so I shouldn't be too lost. What I'm about to do is add support for a web app from Firefox to IE that uses OpenLayers.
I've searched and found a link to this site from another thread which had a list of supported functions and what not here: [URL]
From what I've read in the last hour it seems as though I will have to use some browser sniffing (isMozilla, isIE8, etc) and have multiple conditions (if-else's) in my functions to use the proper calls. Does anyone have extra material that contains differences between IE and firefox? Someone mentioned to me that in lists IE doesn't support trailing commas but ff does..

Does anyone know why the following code would work perfectly in FireFox but error out in IE7?
function readPageNumber() {
var split1 = document.cookie.split("=");
var split2 = split1[1].split("/"); <-- This is the line that errors
var split3 = split2[4].split(".");
var page = split3[0];
return page;
}
The error reads:
Error: Ƈ' is null or not an object.
So why does FireFox execute the code correctly and IE7 does not?

This is what im trying to achieve. At the top of my page there is some
search functionality, through which you cause to be loaded a string
representing an HTML page. Below this and occuupying about 80% of the
window real estate, there is a DIV. There is also a toggle button with
two options "Code View" and "Text View" as I have named them. Depending
on which mode you are in, you can see the block of HTML either as code
(in other words the tags are not rendered. You see the HTML as it
exists.) or as text (rendered HTML). Consider the following code, which
is a simplified version of the page.
<script language="javascript">
var mode = "code";
var s = "<html><head>
<style type="text/css">
My Stylesheet
</style>
<title>
MyTitle
</title>
</head>
<body>";
function ViewDoc()
{
if(mode == "code")
document.getElementById("docArea").innerText = s;
else
document.getElementById("docArea").innerHTML = s;
}
function ChageMode()
{
if(mode == "code")
mode == "text";
else
mode == "code";
}
</script>
<HTML><BODY>
<table>
<tr>
<td>
<input type='button' onclick='ViewDoc()' value='View Document'>
<input type='button' onclick-='ChangeMode() value='Change Mode'>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<div id='docArea'/>
</BODY></HTML
The variable s contains an actual example of some HTML im trying to
load here (with the contents of the stylesheet omitted.)
Now, the following works fine in Internet Explorer. It does not work at
all in Mozilla Firefox. In firefox, for example, I have to cut out the
stylesheet, or the entire page goes fubar. Without the embedded
stylesheet, the "text" view (rendered html) works just fine. But the
"innerText" does not work in Firefox, and im not sure how to replicate
it.

Is there a way I can use a css file based on browser type.
For instance, if it's a webkit browser can I download/use a css3 css file and if it's a IE browser type use the non-css3 css file and use it ?

In Firefox 2, document.getElementById is returning an HTMLDivElement,
in IE 7, it is returning an Object.
For example:
<div id="errorTableDiv">
</div>
....
errorTableDiv = document.getElementById("errorTableDiv");
alert(errorTableDiv);
errorTableDiv.appendChild(someTableNode);
Firefox prints HTMLDivElement and lets me appendChild() later on
IE prints Object and gives an error on the appendChild()
I do not understand why this happens or what the most socially
acceptable way to fix it is.

The following code results in the exact same output. Is there an advantage to using i++ over ++i (or visa-versa) in the loop? :confused:
<script type="text/javascript">
var tarr1 = []; for (var i=0; i<10; i++) { tarr1.push(i); }
var tarr2 = []; for (var i=0; i<10; ++i) { tarr2.push(i); }
alert(tarr1.join(',')+'
'+tarr2.join(','));

given in percents and that are placed into another elements with
percentage sizes, if the content overflows them (of course, overflow is
set to the value of "scroll")

I am writing a database which I edit locally using PHP / MySQL / JavaScript. What I currently do is to list all my DVD covers from a single folder into a drop box but what I would LIKE to do is to have a browsing facility (similar to uploading files) which is obviously a lot quicker. However, what I need is not an upload file form object, rather a simple click button which will
open a browser, allow me to select a file and return the name of the file - just the file not the full directory structure. Is it possible to either just get the file upload form object to return just the name or, using either PHP or JavaScript write a function that will do what I need?

I have a CGI that logs into a a secure site of mine. Basically, all the CGI
does is send the username and password I have set up, and then the normal
page opens in my brower. But, I would rather send this HTML to a file, parse
it, and spit out a different page depending on the user that's logged in.
The problem is that once the username/password gets passed to the web
server, it opens to a new page, the default page. How can I get the HTML
from that page without it opening in the browser?

I have some code that performs differently in Opera than it does in any other browser. So I have a stylesheet specifically for opera. Is there a way to do something like this, where I check the browser, and if it's not opera, then load the default sheet, otherwise load the opera-specific css?
