Variable As A Form Element Name?

Sep 14, 2007

Is it possible to use variables as the name for a form element e.g.

<script type="text/Javascript">
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/Javascript">
var myvar = 1;
</script>
</head>
<body>
<input name="myvar" type="radio" value="radiobutton" />test
</body>
</html>

I tested the above and looked at the course. The name is shown as "myvar" and not "1", so I guess it didn't work.

Can't Assign Variable To Element

Feb 25, 2011

I have several lines of code in different functions where I need to refer to elements in document.form.max, so I figured I would define it as a global variable called tb1 to shorten the writing. The result however is the page senses an error as soon as it gets to tb1.value, of which I can't figure out why since things work when I change tb1 into a local variable. I was under the impression that global = full scope, so I'm not sure what's wrong here.[code]...

Storing An Element's Colour As A Variable?

Jun 4, 2009

I tried and tried for so long to get this to work, but I just can't.

Here's what I did:

var testvar = document.getElementById('example').style.color;
alert(testvar);

Not only would the alert come up empty each time, but IE reports that "testvar" is undefined. Why isn't it working? And if I'm going about it the wrong way, how can I store an element's style info, such as font colour like in this example, as a variable?

Set Variable Width On Element With Slider?

Aug 7, 2011

I'm a new Javascript coder; it's still pretty easy for me to get snagged on stuff. Anyways, I had a question for a specific project I've been trying to figure out.

I have an element set with CSS to a width of 160px. What I want is a way for users to the site to drag a slider back and forth to set the width of the button. Some sort of smooth animation while this is happening would also be nice. I'd also like a way to set a max width on the element.

So, can this be done? I'm guessing it would use jQuery, but I don't really know.

JQuery :: Detect What Type Of Tag/element Is Variable?

Feb 13, 2011

I have a variable that contains Form Elements. So these elements can be eitther a :text either a :check box See code below:

var currentValue = $(targetedInput).val() ? currentValue = $(targetedInput).val() : currentValue =$(targetedInput).is(':checked')

I was hopping that this line of code would assign a different value to currentValue depending on what kind of object i have. My idea was that If the current Object is a check bot it doesn t have a val attribute..

Empty Array Element Variable Type?

Oct 22, 2009

What type of variable is an empty array element? I thought it was undefined, but i noticed that they have different behavior than undefined does:

var r=Array(1);
var s=r.concat([0,"",null,undefined]);
alert (s.toSource()) //==="[, 0, "", null, (void 0)]"
typeof s[0] //==="undefined"
typeof s[4] //==="undefined"

As you can see, 0 and 4 both === undefined. Yet, they don't have the same toSource()...
Is this special type named anything specific? Or more importantly, can it be detected outside of an array as being distinct from undefined? I am thinking this would be the same type as ({}).nonProp ...
I guess the question is actually, "can you tell the difference between uninitialized and undefined"?

JQuery :: Store In Variable Only First / Only Second Of Element's Multiple Classes

Apr 22, 2010

I'm using this bit of jQ to add a class to two different elements based on the class of another (parent/grandparent, etc) element.

First, when there's no class at all in <div id="main-content">, the 'active' class is added to *all* the #nav-primary LIs, and also to *all* the #aux-left DIVs; how can I modify this so that in the absence of any class on #main-content, do nothing?

Second, how can I target only the first or second of multiple classes to store in the 'containerClass' variable, e.g., <div id="main-content" class="apples bananas">?

Text Element In Form Created With CreateElement Can't Pass Post Variable?

Nov 16, 2011

My code is this:

Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html lang="EN" dir="ltr" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>

[Code]...

In a few words it creates a button which when it is clicked it launches the add_text script. Add text script creates a text element for a form and puts a random value for the textbox. Textbox also takes a name which is of array type name="txt[]". Also form has the post method.

When I press e.g. 4 times the add text field button 4 text boxes are added. But when I click the submit button I get a result of 1 instead of 4 when the print count($txt) is executed. Copy paste the code to see the problem.

Variable Scope And Crossing Functions - Resize Plugin In Order To Obtain The Varying Computed Width Of An Element When The Window Is Resized

Mar 23, 2010

I am using Ben Alman's JQuery resize plugin in order to obtain the varying computed width of an element when the window is resized (the element in question is a page wrapper that exhibits the expand-to-fit behavior of a block box, and it's computed width is obviously influenced by the resizing of the window. Essentially, what I need to be able to do, is to reference a variable that is defined in a .resize() function ('width_page') in a seperate .each() function.

[Code]...

I now understand that variables can't cross boundaries like in the example above, which leaves me a little stuck. I also understand that this is specific to the context of the .resize() function, and that it can't be taken out of it without using an element selector. Is there some way I can call the .resize() function in my .each() function?

Declare A Variable Inside A Function - Returns White Space - Not Variable Value

Aug 17, 2010

I am trying to declare a variable inside a function and use it later on in my code... but it just already returns white space... i.e. not variable value. I am setting it within this function:

function show_video1(){
document.getElementById('video1').style.display="block";
var video1Name = "Education World News (Part 1)";
document.getElementById('video2').style.display="none";
document.getElementById('video3').style.display="none";
document.getElementById('video4').style.display="none";
[Code]...

and trying to call it later on with this: <script type="text/javascript">document.write(video1Name)</script> It might be worth noting that each one of my 11 videos will hace a different name.

Onclick Defined Variable - Print Variable Some Place In Document

May 28, 2007

i'm not really sure how to explain this, since I know nothing about javascript, so i'll try and illustrate by the use of php (hope it makes sence)

I have a set of different links, like:

<a href="link.com?page=text1">text 1</a>
<a href="link.com?page=text2">text 2</a>
<a href="link.com?page=text3">text 3</a>
etc, where page is dynamic and can be anything I chose..

Another place in the same document, I echo out what the page variable is, like:

echo "$page";
so when clicking "text 1" the echo will output what i've defined the page to be, in this case "text1" ..

So I want to be able to click the links and change the output of the echo all depending on what i've defined in the link - without refreshing the page!

Is there any easy way to do this?

ChangeYear - GetFullYear - SetFullYear Functions - Extract The 4-digit Value From The Today Variable And Store The Value In A Variable Named Year

Oct 13, 2009

a.) specify two parameters for the changeYear function: today and holiday.

function changeYear(today)(holiday){

b.) in the first line of the above function, use the getFullYear() date method to extract the 4-digit value from the today variable and store the value in a variable named year.

first line

c.) in the second line; use the setFullYear() date method to set the full year of the holiday date object to the value of the year variable.

second line

d.) in the third line, use a conditional operator on the year variable. The test condition is whether the value of the holiday date object is less than the today date object. If it is, this means that the event has already passed in the current year and the value of the year variable should be increased by 1.

third line

e.) in the fourth line of the function, again set the full year value of the holiday date object to the value of the year variable.
