Function To Load Text From Separate File And Insert It Into Page?
Jul 25, 2006
I have a text file that contains a whole bunch of data points neatly formatted (it's basically a CSV file). I need to create a quick JS function that would load the CSV file (from a URL) and display it with in a page. No parsing is needed! I just need to suck down the file and insert/display it within two div tags.

Is it possible to load a separate page into a div tag using Javascript? or doo I need to resort to C# and ASP.NET? What I have is a main page with one content div I wanted to switch based on which heading item a user chooses. I know I will probably need to set the other pages to a fixed width which is fine.Might it be easier to just make my content into an image and load the image? There will be a few lines of text in the image.

Calling Jquery function in separate file?
I'm sure this is simple but I can't work it out.
I have an html file that includes jquery and javascript functions file (functions.js) that contains a simple jquery function.
HTML
Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

I have been successfully using the following "myAjax" function to load text file information from the server.
ajax.js:
After I load the text file, I store the text "records" into an array by doing something like this:
Where the '}' character is my record delimiter. It could just as easily be ' ' or ' ' or the like.
Again, I am not having any problems doing it this way as it suits my current needs.
Now the question(s)
1. Does the call to read the text data from the external file always read in the entire contents or can I read one line or delimited record at a time and store it to the array directly without the text storage?
2. If the text is always read completely (my suspicion), can I safely delete the "TextInformation" after I convert to the array format? Is there any memory penalty for doing it this way as the text information can be somewhat lengthly and I don't like the idea of having doubled memory usage when I only need the information in array format anyway?
This is the idea I am considering, but I don't know if there are drawback to this method of if there is a better way to accomplish the task.
ajax.js:

so I have a html page with the following code included in it:
[Code]....
how would I reference the contents of the text box in a separate Javascript file? I have tried document.form.UserInfo.value and many, many variations and just can't get it to work. I presume it has something to do with the paragraph having the same name?

I have a single webpage that contains information on all 50 U.S. states. There are 50 links at the top to jump down to the state you want, and at the bottom of the information for each state a Back to Top link.
I'm making the Back to Top link into something more complex, and it will require three or four lines of code.
So that I don't have to repeat the code 50 times, and create a burden when I need to edit it, I want to place it in a .js file and call it x. Then below the information for each state I'll simply have:
Does calling code from a .js file 50 times slow down the page load? Which method would load faster?

I have a folder of images from which I access individual pictures using the ID[Who] variable index passed down from the parent frame plus a local index variable p.
document.write('<img src="Photos/'+ID[top.Who]+p+'.jpg" width="100" border="3"><BR>');
where an example file in Photos is PhotosAndiamo1.jpg, the ID in this case resolving to "Andiamo" and the local variable is = 1. This works great.
I would like to add a file of text captions associated with the pictures, preferably saved in the Photos folder such as PhotoAndiamo1.txt.
While I can fetch the images easily by document.writeing the <img ....> command, how do I do a similar fetch for the text data and document.write it to the HTML? (Short of the hassle of creating text images and fetching those.)

I want to have some text in an html file, but I don't want to have several paragraphs in that file. Can I use Javascript to insert text from a different location? If so, how do I do that?Can it really be impossible? I mean, you do it with pictures all the time... I just want to do it with text instead...I can't post any code because I don't know how to do it. >_>" I've been trying to find stuff online, but most of that was to put a whole window inside it, with scrollbars and stuff.

outputting the results from a javascript search function onto a new page. Right now I am using a javascript search script on 7 pages and it works but the results overwrite the current page that the search was initiated from. I would like it to open a new page and print out into a specific area. Im not really proficient in js, tho I know enough to get by. since ive been grinding my gears at work trying to get this to display right. I'll post the code tomorrow morning when I get to work so you can see the function.

I'm writing a script and I've encountered a problem.. I have a txt file with many words, each word in a different line. For example: the file words.txt contains:
word1
word2
word3
word4
word5
I need to load the content of the file into a variable in my script. I prefer that all the words will be in the same variable with line breaks, but if you'll figure out a way to put it in an array, it's ok too. I really don't know how to do it, and I tried to google but didn't understand.. By the way, I don't want to change the txt file to js file, I need it to remain txt..

I'm guessing Javascript security shuts me down here, but just thought I'd post this on the off chance a guru here might know.I'm using ASP.NET AJAX's new AsyncFileUpload control. Functionality-wise it's awesome. Appearance-wise my product manager hates it. I'd like to hide it, and trigger its functionality from a button whose appearance I can fully customize.I tried doing this via calling its click() method, which opens the file selection dialog fine. However, once a file is selected, causing the form to be submitted, the infamous "htmlfile: Access is denied" error rears its head.

My drop down uses an <optgroup label> facility (6 optgroup categories, many values per category).This works fine (when the user chooses a category from the first drop down, a second drop down menu refreshes with the values for that category).HOWEVER, the above system requires me to have every VALUE in plain text on every page. This is no good. It is affecting how the search engines view my page (the text cache version).I want to store these values in a separate file so the search engines do not cache all the values as content on every page.

I was reading up on how to load and parse an XML file into an html page and I found through w3 a great tutorial with sample code: [URL]. It appears to work fine on their website but when I try it from my desktop it doesn't work. So what I have is an html file with contents:
<html><body>
<h1>W3Schools Internal Note</h1>
<div>
<b>To:</b> <span id="to"></span><br />
<b>From:</b> <span id="from"></span><br />
<b>Message:</b> <span id="message"></span>
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
{// code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari
xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();
} else {
// code for IE6, IE5 .....
And then the xml file named "note.xml":
<note>
<to>Tove</to>
<from>Jani</from>
<heading>Reminder</heading>
<body>Don't forget me this weekend!</body>
</note>
For the record I have tried this in chrome and ie.

I have an issue on the following page: [url]
If you look on the right panel, at the heading "What our clients / journalists say", you will notice that it fades into another set of text. However when the page first loads because it takes a few seconds loading in the twitter feed, you will see a big lump of text running down the page.
Only when the Twitter feed has loaded does the lump of text disappear. Can i overcome this somehow?

I am trying to minimize the amount of script that I use on my website. I have sections of each page; each section has the same basic layout. The divs and images that I want to make appear and disappear all have nearly identical ids, the only difference is the number at the end of the id.Is there a way to get one script to automatically detect which id number has been clicked and then show all elements with the same number at the end of the id? I would also like it to hide the elements in the hide function below (basically they are the elements that do not share the same id number).I currently have everything working the way I want it to using multiple functions like the one below but I woul
$("#2thumbNail2 , #ledBar").click(function () {
$("#type201 , #type203 , #type204").hide();
$("#image201 , #image203 , #image204").fadeOut("slow");
[code]....
