Document Declaration Prevents From Working?

Jan 22, 2010

I have the javascript (which is pasted at the end of this request) on my website, but it will not work whenever I include the Document Declaration just above my <head>.

Is there something I can change in the code that will make it work?

The top part is in the head and the second part is at the end of the html code.

Here is the code:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
floatX=25;
floatY=125;
layerwidth=100;

Firebug Prevents Page Interaction?

Whenever firebug detects a js error on a page, it prevents you from interacting with the page, so you can't scroll, you can't click, you can't do anything except close the window.

JQuery :: Selectable Plugin Prevents Click Event?

Mar 2, 2009

I've recently started working with jQuery. Using v1.3.1 and UI v1.6RC6. I created an accordion with another accordion nested within it. I've set both to selectable. Things seemed to be working fine until I noticed that IE and FF were behaving differently. IE allowed me to open the accordion tab that contained the nested accordion, and then allowed me to open up the nested accordion. In FF, I could not open the nested accordion. I managed to get it working in FF by setting the cancel property to li element (which contained the nested accordion). Questions:

1) I traced through the code and didn't see where jQuery unbound the click event that should have been caught by the accordion headers. The only thing that I can see is that the selectable items catch the mousedown event, and when caught create a helper div element at the same position that the mousedown occurred and at z-index 100. I've read elsewhere that a browser registers a click only if the mousedown and mouseup occurred on the same element. Does adding this element fool the browser into thinking there wasn't a click?

2) Following #1. I've read that event bubbling follows the DOM hierarchy - from child to parent, However, is it correct to assume that the target element initially determined by the element with the highest z-index (assuming all different)? Once triggered then event would bubble up ignoring z-index?

3) If #1 and #2 are fairly accurate, does anyone have any idea why IE would seem to still register a click event? Maybe it ignores the fact that another element with a higher z-indez was added and simply compares mousedown/up coordinates?

JQuery :: Use .load, But It Prevents Me From Setting Css Color On What Is Loaded?

Mar 9, 2011

I have code that lets the user click on a link. When he does that, it calls the .Load function. This loads some HTML (a div and some contents) into a tag. Then it tries to color the left border of the DIV that it loaded. Now the interesting thing is that it does succeed to color that border very briefly - but immediately the color is covered up with black, which is the original color.

Array Declaration On FF Vs IE

Sep 13, 2007

There is something that I don't understand well, I use array for
combining strings like

items = ['hello world', ', how are you', '?', 'the end'].join('');

in FF this works well but in IE I had to add something like this

var items = new Array();
items = ['hello world', ', how are you', '?', 'the end'].join('');

My question is why is there a need for var items = new Array(): and
why items = new Array(); doesn't work? I don't want the items to be a
global variable, since it was declare inside a function I want it to
be local only.

Document.getElementById Not Working In IE?

First a little background. I have a client (in-house) who insists that our training pages (launched from within iframes on a parent page) be able to load .wmv files with variables for the width and height parameters so we don't have to recode when videos are switched. Flash videos are not an option.

I've searched the net and have received several suggestions and even code snippets from several sources but the only one that comes close to working is this one:

Object Declaration Question?

Oct 9, 2006

Below are some over simplified examples of code the create a single
instance of an object and I was hoping some one could give me the pros
and cons of each approach.

First declaration: In this case a single object is created using object
literal notation and both the get and __Private methods are availabile
for use and no closure is created.

ABC.Util.SomeObject =
{
get : function(val)
{
return this.__Private(val);
},

__Private : function(val)
{
return "testing";
}
}

Second declaration: In this case a single object is create and only the
get function is availabile for use and a closure is created.

ABC.Util.SomeObject = function()
{
var __Private : function(val)
{
return "testing";
}

return {
get : function(val)
{
return __Private(val);
}
};
}();

Use A Literal In A Function Declaration?

Jun 14, 2010

I have the following code which attaches a function to events in x number of comboboxes (x will probably always = 4, but I do not want to hard-code this). I wish to pass the value of i to the function being attached as well as the value of tempData. In other words, I want the parameters in function to be the value, not a reference variable.

In the current example, I am using the hard-coded variable ci. This I want to be replaced by a literal created when the event handler is attached (the value of the loop variable i). Also, notice that I get the filter value in the event handler (assigned to the variable ct). I would like to replace this code with the value of tempData which would also be determined when the evenet is attached (it is the same value in this case, but it keeps the onChange event from having to do this each time it runs).

var props = {
col_0: "select",
col_1: "select",

[code]....

Declaration Order Issue

Aug 28, 2005

Say I have a code snippet like the one below:

var elm1 = document.getElementById('elm1');
var elm2 = document.getElementById('elm2');

function doStuff(e) {
// Some stuff is done here...
}

function addListeners(e) {
elm1.addEventListener('click', doStuff, false);
elm2.addEventListener('click', doStuff, false);
}

window.addEventListener('load', addListeners, false);
This code will generate an error, namely "elm1 has no properties". To many I guess this isn't very surprising, and my own take on this is that the addListeners function is run before the variables are declared. But what I fali to see is why? To me, a fair beginner with JS, everything is in its right place. What am I missing?

I would very much appretiate if someone could explain the order (when and where to declare the different parts) in which my code here should be ran. Is there something special to have in mind when using window.addEventListener('load', functionname, fasle);?
