Detecting Mouseclicks At A Specific (x / Y) Location
Mar 14, 2010
Is it possible to call a function when user clicks on an (x,y) point (or a small area). I can't place a new object and just set the "onclick" value, so is it possible to do it without that?

Is that possible?

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to detect if a browser supports a specific URI scheme with javascript. So far the only close-but-wont-cut-it solution seems to be looping through navigator.plugins and check for plugins known to support these schemes, but that wont cut it (not maintainable, lacks perenity and have not found such a list). I have HTML anchor tags which use the geo [URL] and tel [URL] uri schemes. These are recognized by the iphone web browser (at least, tel I'm sure of) but not by the more general browsers.
If I click on any of these links in an nonsupporting browser of course, I get a nice browser alert box telling me the scheme isn't supported. But you cant trap that with javascript. I've tried fiddling around with window.navigator and even tried some iframe embedding magic to see if this would work, no success yet. What I want to do is detect I the scheme is supported and if not, prevent the links from a) appearing as links and b) be clickable. So far, I've been able to hack something out of firefox with this:
Code JavaScript:
(function(){
var schemes = ['aaa', 'aaas', 'acap', 'cap', 'cid',
'crid', 'data', 'dav', 'dict', 'dns', 'fax',
'file', 'ftp', 'go', 'gopher', 'h323', 'http',
'https', 'icap', 'im', 'imap', 'info', 'ipp',
'iris', 'iris.beep', 'iris.xpc', 'iris.xpcs', 'iris.lws', 'ldap',
'mailto', 'mid', 'modem', 'msrp', 'msrps', 'mtqp', .....

I am completely new to Javascript and html... but not to programming.
I'm trying to modify something that someone wrote and trying to keep it standardized... meaning they way the did it. Here is an example of what they did. code...
What I'd like to do is display a png image file in a similar fashion if possible... I'm not sure if it can be done use getElementById.
Actually, I'd like to do <div> instead of a table so that I can layer images. I've converted the table above to using <div>, but again, I can't figure out how to do this with an image file.
The main reason for doing this is because I'd like to use the setTimeout feature.

My CMS won't let me customize their HTML structure they didn't give me access to their templating system. But they'd let me access their Head section were I could add custom Javascript and CSS. Example this would be their template structure:
<body>
<div id="wrapper">
<div id="maincontent"> Maincontent </div>
<div id="left"> Left Contents </div>
[Code].....
The reason why the injections was structured like that is, I want the regular divs to be rounded. the Inject1, Inject2, Inject3 would be style in my external CSS. I think it would also be great if it was like a class that i can just be apply it to specific ids or class.

In searching answers to my quest, I have been looking for a method using
document.write to display the thumbnails in one division while showing text
about the thumbs in another division.
All I've seen so far is that document.write('does this') and that's it.
Nobody expands on this and explains what else you can do with it.
It's like they're more interested in showing you the ads than the
information you need.

I have a client that has ads on her website that really slow down the site. These ads are called by an off site javascript file and I want to use a jQuery(document).ready or similar method to call these files after all of the site content has loaded. But these files contain document.write functions to add more javascript files. Since I want to load the files after everything else has loaded, this in turn makes the page blank and then loads the ad. Is there a way to position where document.write will write to?

<div class="box top"></div>
<div class="box main">
<div class="box header">
<div class="badge"><ul><li class="active"><span>60</span></li></ul></div>
[Code]....
What is happening is $(this) is no longer based on .expand being the (this) that is clicked.
like if i have a button SOMEWHERE randomly on the page with this
<div onclick="Minimize('_alerts');">Click Here</div> this will minimize alerts but because the (this) in minimize function doesn't actually point to the right button that I want to add a class to.
Is there a way to modify the minimize function so that it finds the <div id="mytoggle"><ul> <li class="expand boxminimize" rel="_alerts"> using the rel toggle, and then changes the class of the li from expand boxminimize to boxexpanded??
just like the .expand click function I posted on the top of the post that works?

Another thing that has been driving me crazy is that css positioning is handled differently by different browsers. JS is not my area, but I can do a lot with CSS, and I do, but cross browser compatibility is killing me.
I can use an IF IE statement and only IE runs that segment of code, but I haven't been able to figure out out how to make ONLY firefox or ONLY opera or safari enact an encapsulated segment of code. The same type of IF statement doesn't work for them.
Is there a single method using JS that works for all browsers?

I know this code works just fine:
function result(){
var result = document.getElementById('resss').innerHTML;
}
But what I actually want is to import data from a table of an external website. E.g. I want to get the innerHTML of a specific cell in column 3 and row 2 of a specific site.

Danged if I can find the thread, but I swear I saw a $.url() reference in here a day or two ago. It was beingutilized for parsing out the window.location or window.location.search parameters. I made a mental note because that was something I would be needing to do.
Now I can't find it, either because the search isn't finding it or I was dreaming about this function existing.
I rummaged about the API docs and didn't find it there either. Is it something provided by one of the plugins and not a function native to jQuery?

I'm trying to use JS to move the cursor from my user login text field
to the password text field - I've put the onKeyPress() event in the
user input tag but then I press the Tab key the cursor doesn't move -
function detect_tab_key()
{
var key_code = window.event.keyCode;
if (key_code == 9)
{
document.forms[0].frm_password.focus();
document.forms[0].frm_password.select();
}

example: onkeypress="return eventHandlerFunction(event)"
Why is it that you need the return keyword?
Where does the argument event come from?
I know it works, I just want to know why it works.
I've been looking at some refferences and can't seem to find an answer if someone could give me an explanation or point me to a website, that would be great.

I can do this no problem with javascript - except for the detecting flash part. I have no idea how to have a js detect flash - or even if its possible.

I have a dynamic web page with three vertical divs.
In the style attribute, I do not specify the div height because I don't know that until they're draw by the browser.
However, I'd like to add a fouth horizontal div acfross the bottom of the page at the bottom of the tallest of the vertical divs.
Is there any way to get the height of a div after it's drawn?

If I detect an empty textbox, I fill it with a value ('Dad'). If I do this twice, the second time around IE 6 fails to notice that I've cleared the textbox again, thus leaving the textbox cleared. Is there a recommended workaround? Opera 7.23 is detecting the second deletion fine.

I am trying to detect whether a user entered text in a textarea
or hit the delete/backspace button (thus, erasing something). Once
that is detected, I would like to set "var bSaveRequired = true;". It
would be great if this function worked cross-browser -- IE 6.0 and
Firefox.
