JQuery :: Create Little Windows That Aren't Entire New Pop Up Pages?

Jul 6, 2011

I've recently begun this week going through tutorials to learn some jQuery. My whole motivation was to create little windows that aren't entire new pop up pages. Think of being on facebook, going through some pictures and clicking the "Share" button. It's a new window that pops up but not an entirely new page if that makes sense.Unfortunately the w3schools tutorial didn't really point me in a direction to be able to do this. Any ideas on where to learn it?My real intentions are to learn how to do something like the pop up that you see when you first load this page:

Javascript & Windows XP SP2 Security

Jul 23, 2005

As most Javascript coders probably know by now, IE on Windows XP SP2 likes
to prevent our code from running right away (the user is asked to give
permission the first time). Although I can see the danger in allowing all
scripts to run, the fact that IE makes it sound like we are going to install
some huge, horrible application when we are simply adding rollovers or
client-side validation or some other simple little thing really frustrates
me. Specifically what stuff does IE block? Does it check for certain methods
in the script? Does it block everything until you say it's OK? What can
places do to allow their scripts to be run without the need to be validated
by the user? I have heard about "Signed Scripts", but I feel that it would
be hard to modify and develop when a script had to be "Signed" every time.
Any comments?

Controling Windows Media Player With JavaScript

May 22, 2006

I'm working on controlling Windows Media Player with JavaScript. I have all my functions working but a few. I want to sync the movie so that when it finishes the movie it loads the new one.

Now I was thinking of doing something like:

function PlayNext(movie)
{
if( Player.controls.currentPosition == Player.controls.duration )
{
// execute code to load next movie
}
}
I have that function being called every half second and I still can't get it to sync.

Convenient Way For Windows XP Internet Explorers To Add My Javascript Bookmarklet?

Aug 14, 2005

In pre-Windows XP Internet Explorer, adding a bookmarklet for a user was
really simple. All I add to do was create a link that executed
addFavorite().

Internet Explorer under Windows XP won't allow that due to its new security
measures.

How can I make adding a bookmarklet convenient for my Windows XP IE users
without having them to do surgery on their security preferences?

Right now I'm having them Ctrl-D to add a new bookmark. Right-click the new
bookmark to get the Properties dialog, and then pasting in the contents of
my bookmarklet. This is quite messy as you can imagine. In addition, when
they save the bookmarklet, they have to hit "Yes" to an error box telling
them that "javascript:" does not have a registered program associated with
it, do they want to save the bookmark anyways?

How To Call A PHP Script Using JAvaScript

Mar 18, 2006

First let me describe the problem. I have an HTML form that in one
field has an onBlur call to a JavaScript function. When you exit the
field, it calls the JavaScript routine, which in turn calls a PHP
script. The PHP script runs returns the value needed. And returns to
the JavaScript. The JavaScript function is then supposed to set
alerts depending on the values returned from the PHP script. It
doesn't. If you then move the cursor into the field and exit again,
it again runs the JavaScript which calls the PHP script then
proceeds to show the alerts exactly like it is supposed to.

I did some experimenting, and if you use a button to run the
JavaScript, the exact same thing happens. Click the button and the
PHP script sends back the value, but no alert. You click the button
a second time, and the alert shows.

I am using the JavaScript monitor in FireFox v1.5 so I can see that
the PHP script is being called and returning the correct value the
first time. So what I am trying to figure out is why the routine has
to be called twice before I get my alert.

Below is the HTML, JavaScript & PHP that I am using....

Can A Hyperlink Call A Javascript Confirm Prompt?

Mar 17, 2006

Hi, I have this JavaScript, which I only want to occur if a user clicks on a
hyperlink hotspot in a large image:

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var answer = confirm ("This link is not available, click OK to load a
similar link, or Cancel to not.")
if (!answer)
window.location="http://www.yahoo.com/"
// -->
</script>

To make matters more challenging, there are about 10 hotspots in the image,
and I want them each to have a different value for window.location. I.e. if
the user clicks OK in each hotspot, each one will redirect them to a
different site.

Call Javascript In Parent From Child (pop Up) Window

Jan 12, 2007

I have some javascript that works in Firefox 2 but not in IE 7. In the
parent page, a user clicks a link and a new window is opened so that
they can maintain some values. When the user is finished, they can
click either a save or a cancel button. If the user clicks the save
button, I want the parent page to be refreshed and then the child
window to close. I have this working perfectly in FF2 but it does not
in IE. In IE, the parent page is refreshed but when it refreshes, the
screen that comes back is the same screen as the child window. When
the child window should close, it instead is being refreshed and comes
back as a blank screen. Code:

Call Javascript Files In Header Or Footer?

Sep 14, 2010

I've been using JavaScript for a few years now I'm not a huge expert I rely more of JQuery. I am just wondering what best solutions are there to call Javascript files (and to make pages load faster):

Normally I request all these in the Header like you normally would but I have seen and heard people to call their Javascript files in the footer to make page load faster and have all their Javascript functions all in the footer as well.

Is this a good idea? What are the downside? Should I just keep all my JS in the Header as usual?

Child Windows Can Not Access Window.opener When Multiple Child Windows Are Open

Jul 23, 2005

I have a parent window that pushes a new window object onto an Array
with the following code :

OpenChild()
{

//totalNumWindowsCreated is global

totalNumWindowsCreated = totalNumWindowsCreated + 1;
childWnds.push(window.open(link, "child" +
totalNumWindowsCreated,"dependent"));

..
..
..
}

This pops up a new window with every call. In the child window I call
a parent function onbeforeunload, appClose() :

function appClose(){

if (window.opener && !window.opener.closed){
window.opener.CloseChild(getQueryString("application"));
}}

This is in my frameset tag of the child code :

<frameset ... onbeforeUnload='appClose()'>

The window.opener.CloseChild() function is called perfectly when I have
one child window open, but as soon as I create another child window
both of the open child windows don't ever call it. They do both go
into the onbeforeunload appClose() function, but do not call the
window.opener.CloseChild() function inside of this routine.

Anyone have any ideas why when I have two child windows open I can't
access the window.opener functions?

I have tried taking each new window out of the array and used the
following code in CloseChild() :

CloseChild()
{

//win and totalNumWindowsCreated are both global

totalNumWindowsCreated = totalNumWindowsCreated + 1;
var win = window.open(link, "child" +
totalNumWindowsCreated,"dependent");

..
..
..
}
