Change Of Mouse Pointer Is Only Visible If I Move The Mouse

With the following code I can change the mouse pointer. However, if you
click in Mozilla (with IE it works perfect) on 'Show hourglass' the mouse
pointer changes only if you move the mouse at least on pixel.

I'm making a webpage for a little embedded device with a touch screen. I don't want the mouse pointer to be visible until the user clicks on a link in which case the mouse pointer should change to an hour glass until the new page is displayed (the device is rather slow so the user needs to get some feedback while waiting). code...
This properly hides the cursor after the first page is loaded but it doesn't display the hour glass when I click on the link. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
I have done a little work on a simple script to change images on mouse over and on mouse off. It was meant to be a very simple one but it is not working and I am not quite sure why.

I have a JavaScript routine that runs on a timer and updates the position of a background image using the CSS background-position property. In Internet Explorer, it changes the mouse pointer to an hourglass when it refreshes the screen, and this is really annoying since it happens on the timer, about every 100 milliseconds or so. Is there anything I can do about this?
Is it possible with jQuery, or JavaScript for that matter, to trap the mouse in a div or other tag so that it can only move around in it. I'd like this for a modal window so thta the user knows that they must do something in the window first before carrying on.
I would like to change cursor to pointer when mouse is over li element and it works until mouse gets over input or label element. I want to have pointer alse when mouse is over label or input in li elment.
I would want to show a div (the information about the song) when the visitor hover on a cover art on a radio website but this div overlap the cover art with an opacity of 0.7

The problem is that when the information div appears, the mouse pointer isn't on the cover art div anymore for the navigator so the information div disappears, and so on... resulting in a flash effect.
I've been given the task of mantaining and fixing a website which I didn't design.
I'm using Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.x. Specifically, the problem is that navigation menues (written in javascript) don't disappear when the mouse moves outside of the area of the menues (some of the menues are nested two and three levels). As long as the mouse cursor remains *within* the options of the menues, the option under the mouse cursor is highlighted and the corresponding sub-menu is displayed. If the mouse pointer then moves over another option of the menu then the former sub-menu hides, the new option is highlighted and its corresponding sub-menu is displayed, or, in case of a nested sub-menu, the corresponding sub-menu is displayed. So far so good.
As I said before, the problem arises when the mouse pointer moves *out* of the menu area. In this case, the last menu + sub-menu (if available) + sub-sub-menu (if available) remain visible treading any underlying content, instead of auto-hiding after half a second, for example, as is the case of all well designed websites.
As far as I could find out, the original programmer used some third-party tool to design the menues, and the javascript code was automatically generated by that tool. By the way, the code ....
I have a jquery statement that enables or disables a button depending on whether a checkbox has been selected in a grid. This works fine in firefox but in IE the button is still displayed as disabled after checking the box. When you move the mouse pointer over the button is instantly becomes enabled. Showing an alert dialogue also makes the button display as enabled. Is there anyway to force IE to refresh the button display after running the statement?

I am wanting the user to move their mouse over a word and a description should appear. Like this: [URL], move your mouse over copyright symbol, which is down in the right hand corner of the photo. The problem i have is when i try to move my mouse down too the menu that slides on mouseover. The moment i remove my mouse from the menu it moves away again(just like i made it).
So my question is: can i make a div that pauses all script? That way i could do that with menycontent and force the menycontent to show.
