Capturing Referring URL With Cookie?

Apr 15, 2010

I am using a third party shopping cart service written in php. I don't have access to the php code so I decided to use javascript to write a cookie. What I'm trying to do is have the cookie capture the referring URL and then keep it for a day and have it follow where ever the visitor goes in the shopping cart. Then when they check out, the referring URL will populate a form field and be returned as part of the form results. This way I can track where my visitors come from. My code is below and I'm adding it to the file designated as the head section. (The files I have access to must use some form of include but I can't use php in them - just html and javascript. I've tried.)

I have an alert in the code that suggests something to do as well as set the cookie. The alert comes up and the cookie is set but when you go to another page, the alert comes up again and another cookie is set. I just need to have it set once so when they fill out the order form, I'll know where they came from.

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
cookie_name = "dataCookie";
var referred;

[code]....

In the body I am reading it with a form field of

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="javascript">
document.write("<FORM>")
document.write("Originally Referred by:")

[code]....

Referring Web Page

Feb 3, 2006

Without having to create a cookie....I would simply like to "grab" the referring web page of visitors to my site.

I am going to call this script from a small flash Action Script file but that doesn't really matter at this point.

If anyone can answer this simple question I'd appreciate it. I have done a search but could not get a direct answer within the first 4 pages.

Allowing Access From One Referring URL?

Mar 5, 2010

I create eLearning materials which are given away as a communty service to help people improve their health. A typical eLearning project has a few educational screens (using a Learner Management System-LMS-template) and an interactive exercise (on an external web page-htm or html-usually accessed by button which navigates to the exercise's URL).

The interactive exercise should only be accessed from inside the eLearning lesson using the button, because it requires understanding of the way it works plus important cautions to assure proper use. I need to prevent the use of the URL outside of taking the lesson (for example, someone taking the lesson acquires the exercise's URL from their browser history and then may give this to others who access the exercise directly-without necessary knowledge and cautions).

I tried document.referrer, using JavaScript. Using the referrer URL from inside the lesson and adding the JavaScript to the exercise's htm code worked OK in FF, but not in IE 8. In FF, if the referrer was not the correct single URL from inside the lesson, then it redirected; if the correct URL, the exercise appears.

The JS code follows:

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
var oksite = "http://www.mysite.com/xyz/courseidxxxxx/yyyy/zzz.html";

[code]....

In IE 8, I was not able to get it to work. Using an alert, I noticed that the referrer in IE 8 was blank.My web hosting (GoDaddy) is a shared Windows hosting. I would have to upgrade from IIS6 to IIS7 to use PHP. Bigger challenge: I've never used PHP. If possible, I would prefer to use JS. But, I am open to any suggestion that will help.I am also wondering if part of the IE 8 issue is that I am using IE 8 X 64?

I want to append a string "&sid=xyz" to the current page URL if the referring URL comes from site [URL]. I have the following code -

if (document.referrer.indexOf(/xyz/) > 0) {
query = query + "&sid=xyz";
}

However, the string is not being appended.

Cookie Editing - Using - Only Displays Certain Text If The Cookie Is A Certain Number

Apr 30, 2009

I am making a sort of text based game (Just a hobby) I like to do that sort of thing. So, anyway, considering all I can really do is code HTML, and very, very light javascript, I kinda need some help.

I basicly know how to do everything except affect & Use the cookies. So what I need to do with them is to

#1.) Have a code to change the cookie number, say... on the click of a button.

#2.) Have a code where it only displays certain text if the cookie is a certain number.

I cant code JS and have no idea how hard/easy this is.

If it is insanely hard & needs a master coder, just tell me and ill take it off. I dont want to be wasting anyones time.

IE6 Always Rejects A Particular Cookie Regardless Of Privacy/cookie Setting

Jul 23, 2005

I have an embedded system with a web interface. One of the web pages
has a small JavaScript program that, when run on IE6, always displays
the message that cookies need to be enabled:

if (document.cookie.indexOf('asm_session') == -1)
{
document.cookie = 'asm_session=0'
if (document.cookie.indexOf('asm_session') == -1)
{
document.write("Advanced System Management access requires
cookies to be enabled."+'<br><br>');
}
}

This problem only occurs with IE6, not Mozilla. It also only happens
on some of the embedded systems, but this problem exists for everyone
running IE6.

The problem isn't limited to the Javascript code, either. On another
web page from this embedded system, a cookie is set the normal way,
via the HTTP header. This cookie is also rejected.

When I display any page that attempts to set a cookie, IE6 displays
the blocked icon and says that cookies on that URL are blocked.
However, I have set all privacy and cookie options to their most
permissive. I've spent the past hour changing every option I can find
that's even remotely related to cookies and privacy, and nothing
changes. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Retrieving Cookie Data Through Document.cookie

Jul 20, 2005

In my web application we are able to store large data in the browser
cookie keeping in mind the limit of 300 cookies per cookie file, 20
keys per cookie per domain and 4KB max size of each cookie. We are
unable to retreive this large amount of data immediately after storing
through document.cookie in IE browser (The same works fine in
Netscape).

Is there any limit on the size of the data that can be retreived using
document.cookie in IE browser? Could you please suggest a solution to
this problem I am facing.

Capturing The Output Of A Script Src Tag

Jul 20, 2005

I'm sure you all have seen how using the src argument in a script tag
is essentially the same as including the body of the script within
your page. For example:

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://somepage.com/somead/show_ads.js">
</script>

Is there a way to capture the html output of that script and save it
to a variable or text file so that I can use a language like php to
parse it and look for certain words or phrases?

For instance, this particular url executes some javascript code which
produces an iframe on my page, but view source only displays the
script tag. Using innerHTML I can get the iframe code to print in
another browser window, but I would prefer the iframe html be save to
a variable or text file so that I can write a script to parse it on
the fly.

Capturing URL In Address Bar Before Refresh

Oct 5, 2009

My client has a training site that is associated with 4 different domains. If a user navigates away from one of the domains to another site (for instance www.google.com) they want to display a message and ask them if they want to leave the training site. my understanding of the window.location.href is that it will capture what is typed into the address bar until the request is submitted to the server but by then they are leaving the site. below is my code on the onbeforeunload event. conceptually: i want to capture the URL, compare the hostname and if the host name is one of the 4 domains then allow them to proceed, if it is not then as them if they want to leave the site. if they click ok allow them to move forward, if the click cancel then reload the page. I know this is considered bad design and i have expressed this but this how they want the site to behave.

<script type="text/javascript">

{
var strCurrentURL = window.location.href;

Capturing Form Reset

Aug 8, 2005

I've got a form that is enabling/disabling other fields based upon radio selections. I've got it all working, except with the form reset button. My "refresh" routine just iterates through the radio box to check which item is selected based upon e[i].checked state and enables/disables accordingly. Unfortunately it seems the reset event fires before the actual state of e[i] has been reset and my form enabing/disabling gets out of sync.

var btn = document.getElementById('formData');
formValidation.addEvent(btn, 'reset', formValidation.refreshUI, false);

refreshUI: function() {
var e = document.getElementsByTagName('input');
for (var i=0; i<e.length; i++) {
if (e[i].type == 'radio' && e[i].name == 'ipType' && e[i].id == 'ipStatic' && e[i].checked == true) {
document.getElementById('ipHost').disabled = false;
document.getElementById('ipAddress').disabled = false;
document.getElementById('ipMask').disabled = false;
document.getElementById('ipGateway').disabled = false;
break;
}
else if (e[i].type == 'radio' && e[i].name == 'ipType' && e[i].id == 'ipStatic' && e[i].checked == false) {
document.getElementById('ipHost').disabled = false;
document.getElementById('ipAddress').disabled = true;
