Can I Tell If HTMLElement Object Is Selected ?
Jul 17, 2010
In Javascript if I have an HTMLElement object, for example as returned by a call to document.getElementsByTagName or document. getElementById,is there any way I can tell whether that page element (eg paragraph, image, or DIV tag) is currently selected on the page ?I know there are functions such as window.getSelection which can query selected text. However what I would like to be able to tell is whether an arbitrary element represented by a JavaScript HTMLElement object is part of the current selection that the user has made on the web page.ie. this would cover any type of element not just text.Are there any other possible ways to achieve this, eg JavaScript calling into a Java program for example ?

We all know (and love!) the fact that Mozilla exposes element constructors (HTMLParagraphElement, for example) for prototyping. Turns out Opera 8 allows you do to the same thing.
So this leaves Safari, which has actually allowed you to do this since 1.0, *but* doesn't publicly expose the constructors. The below code exports constructors into public variables matching those in Mozilla and Opera 8:

if (navigator.vendor == "Apple Computer, Inc." || navigator.vendor == "KDE") { // WebCore/KHTML
function(HTMLConstructors) {
for (var i in HTMLConstructors) {
window["HTML" + i + "Element"] = document.createElement(HTMLConstructors[i]).constructor;
}
}({
Html: "html", Head: "head", Link: "link", Title: "title", Meta: "meta",
Base: "base", IsIndex: "isindex", Style: "style", Body: "body", Form: "form",
Select: "select", OptGroup: "optgroup", Option: "option", Input: "input",
TextArea: "textarea", Button: "button", Label: "label", FieldSet: "fieldset",
Legend: "legend", UList: "ul", OList: "ol", DList: "dl", Directory: "dir",
Menu: "menu", LI: "li", Div: "div", Paragraph: "p", Heading: "h1", Quote: "q",
Pre: "pre", BR: "br", BaseFont: "basefont", Font: "font", HR: "hr", Mod: "ins",
Anchor: "a", Image: "img", Object: "object", Param: "param", Applet: "applet",
Map: "map", Area: "area", Script: "script", Table: "table", TableCaption: "caption",
TableCol: "col", TableSection: "tbody", TableRow: "tr", TableCell: "td",
FrameSet: "frameset", Frame: "frame", IFrame: "iframe"
});
function HTMLElement() {}
HTMLElement.prototype = HTMLHtmlElement.__proto__.__proto__;
var HTMLDocument = document.constructor;
var HTMLCollection = document.links.constructor;
var HTMLOptionsCollection = document.createElement("select").options.constructor;
var Text = document.createTextNode("").constructor;
var Node = Text;
}
In Opera < 8, all elements inherit directly from Object(), so you can still prototype Object() if you need to do element prototyping. Internet Explorer's elements *don't* inherit from Object, oddly enough, so who knows with that browser. In any case, there you go. It also happens to work in Konqueror (AFAIK).

This is irritating cause i read a arcticle with a solution to this in one of the many newsletters i receive, but then i didn't need it and now i do i can't find it, and i'm searching for days now .
I have say 3 links
link1 --- link2 --- link3
all of then formatted nicelly with CSS. When i select one of then, say link1, it becames with a diferent background color.
What i want is to keep tha backg color even when the user clicks anywhere on the page (thus loosing focus) and until another link is clicked.
I tought this could be possible in a CSS only way, but now i think i have to use some Javascript.

I need some jQuery code to get the data from the URL (example.com/?areaCode=1234) and then use it to add selected="selected" to the correct option from this set.
<option value="1111">one one one one</option>
<option value="2222">two two two two</option>
<option value="3333">three three three three</option>
<option value="1234">one two three four</option>
I hope you understand, it's quite hard to explain even though its super simple.
I can do this in PHP by doing<option value="1234" <?php if($_GET['areaCode'] == 1234) { echo 'selected="selected"; }>one two three four</option>

I have come across an issue that only happens with IE.I have a custom save function that is designed to handle different ajax submits but I will simplify it for debugging. The issue is that once I make a submit everthing is fine at first. Then once I try to submit a second time it craps out. I am checking to see if there is an onsubmit function and then executing it like so before continuing. After the inital submit it is no longer found. When I alert the typeof document on the form it returns object but when I add the onsubmit it says object expected or object is null or undefined.
Code:
function secureBarSubmit(formId)
{
alert(typeof document.getElementById(formId)); // object always
alert(typeof document.getElementById(formId).onsubmit); // func first time then it is broken

Can assign a new function to a built-in object in Firefox:
But IE and Opera don't have a MouseEvent or HTMLElement that can be set up in the same way. Can you do this in IE or Opera, or just Firefox, and maybe Webkit?

Is there any way at all to create a new template object that inherits from the built in Date object so as to be able to add new methods to that child object without adding them to the built in Date object? I've tried everything I can think of and as far as I can tell it keeps referencing the Date function instead of the Date object and so doesn't work.

On my index page load (only in Internet Explorer), a message box pops up saying "Message from Web Page [object Object]". After clicking OK the photo gallery loads and there is no problem.No idea how to fix this, or really what the error means. You can view the error from my site here

I am trying some simple things with javascript and trying to use it in a object oriented way. However I am now facing a problem in which I can't access an object variable from an object method. I am using jQuery.
My code is as follows;
Code:
My problem is that the variable msg1 does not work when accessed from function called from the jQuery get function. I get the message undefined. Therefore I am wondering, is there a way how I can access msg1 of my object instance from the get function of jQuery?

How would I go about copying all the prototype functions AND the constructor from one object into another object, and then call them?
I know I can use this.example.call(this), but that's not an acceptable solution. I want to deploy this style over dozens, potentially hundreds of objects.

I've been trying to create a 'loading page' for a from. When a user submitts a form, a loading animation is displayed on the page. Then I have javascript connecting to a url on my server that generates a dynamic file and returns it from memory. My problem is that I can display the text from this new file, but what I want to do is prompt the user to save the file locally. Is there a way to make this sort of conversion in javascript?
