Button OnClick Event Works Great In IE But Not In Safari/FF?
May 14, 2009
I've spend about 2 days writing this javascript code and it works great in IE only to find out that it does nothing in Safari/FF.
Here is my code:
<script type="text/javascript">function calculate() {
var thetotal = 0;
var silver = 0;
var gold = 0;
[Code]....
Basicly what the script does is using some variables in my form will calculate a total price in real time when you click the "Calculate" button. Works great in IE, but in Firefox/Safari it won't do a thing..

var myVideo = {
Having issues with the video plugin for jQuery. This works great for Chrome but not Safari or Firefox. In Firefox it just shows up as a grey box with a light grey 'X' in the middle, and in Safari as nothing. I'm guessing it's something about the MIME but I have no idea what to do about that.

I'm just restating my "site abandonment" post but with a clearer title as I realized it probably only made sense to me and me alone.
I have window that pops up with our commerce system. I have it set to pop up a window via JavaScript if the visitor quits early in the process (abandons the commerce system before completing all of the steps. The new popup is just a customer survey ("why are you leaving, is there something else we can help you with" etc. etc.).
Here's the problem, it works fine in IE, but in Firefox, anytime the page in the original commerce window is changed, refreshed or advanced to a new page, the survey popup window is called rather than just on window close.
Again, here's the two JavaScript routines that handle clicks on the graphical close button and on the window 'X' close button. Code:

I've been working on this for about four hours (two today, two yesterday) and keep hitting the brick wall. I'm trying to create a function that will add an attribute to specified tags. As the title says, it works great in FF and not at all in IE7. Probably the first question you'll ask after you see my code is "why?" Well, I've got a form with over 100 form fields in it, and if I can avoid manually adding an attribute to all of them, I'll take the JS route.

Each instance of what I need edited also has an id on the page for referenceSo things like <p id='titleonebox' class='editable'>Title that can be edited</p> If I'm updating the DB I have it all figured out because I'm updating X where X is X.However on the index page itself I have 'headers' that I want editable for each div(The divs are populated via the DB and they edit fine)I've tried using save.php from jquery's jEditable documentation but it won't save the value when I refresh the page.

I have written a PHP script for a secure client login system and it is working on Firefox and Chrome. But it doesn't work on Safari and IE. I have noticed that some of the javascript functions do not work at all while a few of them work.I am pasting the part of my code that does't work up here:
<script type="text/javascript">
function newdir(i)
{
[code]....
When I click on the create folder button (newdir.png), I don't see the alert message that I gave for debugging. I have the SAME problem with 2 more buttons on the same page.

I have two select lists that have option lists that are created from external XML lists that contain course offerings available at different locations. Each location has a different set of course offerings. When a user selects a location, the javascript code will hide / show the option entries that correspond to the course offerings for that location. If a user selects a course offering, the javascript code will show / hide the locations that offer those courses.
Click events are attached to each of the Option entries with the code below. The code works correctly with Firefox and Opera, but the click events are never triggered in IE, Safari or Chrome. The Chrome debugger seems to indicate that the click events get set up in Chrome (although I am not sure where JQuery saves event handler data). Each option entry has a unique ID tag.
$(".locn_option_select").click(function (locnevent) { // Set up click action on the option entries
locnevent.preventDefault;[code].......

I have a site which displays a selection of advert listings. We log the number of clicks each advert receives via ajax requests.The listings link to both internal pages on our site and external pages, hence the ajax - we cannot log the'clicks' by logging the requests on the destination pages as these are not all on our site for us to log. Also, I don't want to potentially get false positives e.g.from bookmarked pages - hence I am logging the actual clicks, not the requests on the destination.
All is OK in most browsers, but there is a problem with Safari (I am running Safari 4.0 on Windows XP running in Virtualbox OSE) but only where the destination is to open in the same window/tab (some listings go to a new window, some don't). I am logging clicks via an ajax request in the onclick event, which is working fine when the listing is to open in a new window, but it appears that when a new window is not to be opened, the ajax never gets sent.A have constructed the following minimal test case:
index.html
Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" [code].....
Note the line commented '****' in index.html which cancels the action of the link. When this is not commented out, the ajax request is sent correctly. Without it (the desired situation) the ajax request never gets sent. Its as if Safari saves up the ajax requests to do later, but never sends them as the new page cancels all such 'saved up' actions.I am using the Safari web developer tools, but I have also checked this test case by checking the Apache logs. Note that as a test case I don't pretend that it will work in IE, but it should work in standards compliant browsers and has been tested on Firefox 3.6.6 and Opera 10.6. The Apache logs show that logger.txt is being requested, unless it is already in the browser cache.Possible workarounds I've considered, but would prefer to avoid:
On the site in question the only such links that currently open in the same window are internal, so I do have the option of logging safari clicks by logging these requests as opposed to clicks and checking the http referer on the server side. As this is not a very flexible solution as it relies on these specific circumstances, also relies on all other links successfully making a new window, and furthermore relying on http referer could result in false negatives I'd rather find a solution within the javascript.I haven't checked whether an asynchonous request would work, but I don't wish to do this anyway just in case there is ever a server problem that prevents the response coming back (note that for these purposes the response is actually superfluous - we are sending the server a message but don't need anything back). I also want to avoid the delay in sending the user to the destination - there is no point having to wait for a response we don't need.Lastly, and my prefered workaround unless I can find anything better, is to make Safari (only) open all links in a new window anyway.

I have identical code in my index that works, so I'm just guessing the error is somewhere else, I know IE is not the best target to aim for - but I really want this to work in the windows default browser....
Here is the php page...
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>[code]....
and here is the javascript that works in the index but not here...
function Abort()
{
document.location="AddFamilyMember.php";
};
When I load the page everything looks ok, but click on the abort button, and all that happens is that the little error symbol pops in the lower left of IE. The names of the two files are "AddFamilyMember.php" and "AddFamilyMember.js".

I created a "cancel" button for my form at the clients' request, I
accidentally copied a submit button and added an OnClick event- a very
simple javascript.history function. It did not appear to work at all-
it kept submitting the form. I changed the submit button to a plain
old button and it worked fine.
Can anyone explain how the browser works with a javascript onClick
event ona submit button? Does it automatically submit the form no
matter what onClick event you use?

I am wondering if it is possible to navigate anchor links using a button onclick event. I want next and previous hit buttons to navigate the already existing hits (#hit1, #hit2, etc.).For instance, I have:
<script type="text/javascript">
var numHits = {HITS}-1;
function nextHit(){[code]....
I have seen working examples with the href tag (e.g. <a href="#" onclick="func();return false">), but nothing with buttons. I also can't seem to get the working href examples to work on my server.For instance, I cannot get this code to work, it just goes to js_required.html:
<a href="js_required.html" onclick="doSomething(); return false;">go</a>
function doSomething(){
alert("test");
}

I am have an MVC app that generates a list of rows, of which one of the columns is a button. Here is the rendered HTML for the buttons:
<input
id
="btnUpdate21"
type
="submit"
value
="Approve"
synchId
="21"
/>
<input
id
="btnUpdate22"
type
="submit"
value
="Approve"
synchId
="22"
/> .....
Following is my selector that I use to bind the buttons to my click event:
<script
type
="text/javascript"
charset
="utf-8"
>
$(document).ready(function
() {
$('input[id^="btnUpdate"]'
).click(promptForSynchDate);
});
I have been trying to access the button Id, though what I really need is the attribute synchId, to use inside of a modal. I have so far been unable to access either one of them. My modal works fine. But the value of either attribute is always "undefined".
Here is my click event handler: (I stuck the alert in there just for debug purposes)
function promptForSynchDate() {
$(document).ready(
function () {
var test1 = $(this).attr('id');
alert(
'test1 is : ' + test1);
$(
'#approve-synch').dialog({ .....

Doing web page with ASP/VB.NET. Have text boxes for UI on page. Two command buttons - Submit (for db update) and Cancel. I need the Cancel button to prompt the user to verify cancellation. Need OK/Cancel buttons on alert. If user selects Cancel-no action. If user selects OK then I want the text boxes cleared of user text input and focus returned to first text box. I think this may be the code but do not know how to apply it.
function Clear()
{
var res=window.confirm("Please confirm cancellation-text boxes will be cleared"); [code].....
Is this code valid or invalid for the events I need? How do I set it to fire when user clicks the ASP Cancel button?

Well I have been working on a website, got it to work perfectly in Firefox and Safari.BUT, in Internet Explorer it refuses to work.The website is called Auction 4 PenniesIt was inspired by Swoopo, a auction website with timers.I wanted to attempt creating the website without cheating (viewing available source) and without having to purchase a $800 clone.Right now how it is setup is:-The page loads-Then the page uses AJAX to retrieve the Products Page-On the Products Page it has Current Timers and Current Highest Bidder with Amount-After that is all loaded, it will loop every second after that, but not reloading all products, just pulling information from the database on another page (using ajax) andcreating JS with the information pulled. The returned JS then is executed to reset the Timers and Highest Bidder (in case of a change)I know there is a Fix to edit the registry on the computer, but there are problems with that.

Everything works fine in Firefox, IE and Chrome. However in Safari, it's like the contents of form-handler.js are not there, its not doing anything. Using Safaris dev tools you can clearly see the script has loaded fine.

When a user visits index.html on my site, they input their email address. The form redirects them to "confirmed.html", the form also writes a cookie with their email address.When the user gets to confirmed.html, I use an "if/else" statement. If there is a cookie (email address), I append ("#"+user_email) to the window location. I do this so that when the user shares with "addthis" tool, I will know who is sharing. Unfortunately addthis only shares the current page, so I want new users to the site to be redirected to index.html My code works in firefox, but not safari. In safari it just seems to redirect to index nomatter what. The user never even sees confirmed.html.
var user_email = unescape(document.cookie);
if (document.cookie)
