I have a tabular html form where users can enter a number of titles and file specifications in columns. Having the users actually ENTER the full filespec (path AND filename) has proven problematic so I'd like to give them a way to browse around the local system on which the browser is running, and select the file. When done, they hit Submit and the filespec get sent to php along with everything else on the form.....
So far I've gotten lots of "you can't do that" (I stupidly thought the input type="file" would actually work), and found a few javascript samples that MIGHT do it if I could get any of them to work. I CAN'T be the first person ever to need a way for users to do this to upload or email files or whatever. I"m sure I'm missing something important, but I'm astonished there isn't a reasonable way to do this in html.
First, CAN THIS be done in javascript - Display the form. Show any previously entered values in the fields. Let the user change existing filespecs, enter new filespecs, or browse the system to select filespecs. Put whatever they select in the field. When they hit submit send the filespec (the WHOLE filespec) along with the other data back to php for storage?
If so, does anyone have a pointer to a good, simple, idiot-proof example? Unfortunately, at this time I know VERY little about javascript, so I need something that can be understood and quickly implemented...
I have several .js files that are included in various jsp pages.
I've read somewhere(can't remember where?) that the browser caches .js files.
If this is the case is it better to include all of them in the 1st page of my app regardless if they're used in this page & take a performance hit once? - or am I missing something?

I have the following JavaScript (see below). The script requests an XML file from the server and displays it on the page.The script works fine when the requested XML file is stored on the same server as the script.The problem is when I try requesting an XML file from an external server such as the National Weather Service. I get an error. If I take the XML file from the National Weather Service and save it to my server it works. Why can't I use my script to request XML files stored on external servers?

I have four folders and each folder has one images, let say ( images-one.jpg, images-two.jpg, images-three.jpg, images-four.jpg). now,in index.php page there are four buttons, each buttons for each images. if i clicked button numer two for images-two.jpg, and then it will show that images name from that folder in index.php page. and then if i reload same index.php page or refreshed same page, i want to show SAME images that I clicked before which is images-two.jpg. how can i write that code to show images from four files, each files are in each folder.
I've found a post regarding this issue but it's a little bit different this time.So I've created a .php script which creates some galleries where users can click them and browse their respective photos. It works like a charm in Chrome and FireFox, but IE doesn't like it.With this code:

When I click on the gallery thumb it should open the first photo in fancybox and browsing through the gallery should by peanuts. And it is, but with IE just opens the .jpg in a blank page without fancybox. The strange thing is I've used the same script approach in another website and the fancybox works just fine with IE too. So why doesn't in this case?

The following code is working fine in firefox n not working in IE8... I get the Object Expected Error when the code hits the if(GBrowserIsCompatible())..... line in the javascript code. Clear cache and browser history does not work. Does anyone have a resolution for this?

On my site i use a lot of features that are unsupported by older browsers, and right now it looks pretty stupid when the features are only partially shown. So i was wondering if there's a way of making the browser look to different css files depending on which browser and version it is. For example, css3 gradient backgrounds are supported in firefox 3.6 or something, but not in 3.0. All the hacks out there is to 3.*, so it changes for the allready working 3.6 too if i hack it. I want to controll it so that i have a specific css file for the none-supporting version and lower and one for the supporting and above.
