Assigning ResponseXML To Variable?
Apr 25, 2010
I'm trying to create a function that will return the value of responseXML so I can assign a variable to it.
Code:
ajax.downloadXml = function (url)
{
var XMLHttpRequestObject = false;
[code]....
Stepping through the function, the onreadystatechange seems to never be executed, so nothing is returned. There's probably just a fundamental I'm messing up on.

how to assign a value to a global variable within a function and can't seem to figure it out. Here's my thought,
<script type="text/javascript">
var global1=""; var global2="";
function assign(vari,strng){
[Code]....
The purpose behind this is creating a form that will work with an existing database that would normally have a text area with lots of information. I am trying to turn it into a checklist that I can run from a mobile device. The global variables woudl be used to fill in a hidden text area that would then be passed on to the database upon submission. I am trying to keep the code as compact as possible.

I am trying to assign a variable to a jquery object that is found using the children() and eq() methods. This is a simplified version of the html structure.[code]Here is the jquery code. All I want to do is assign an object to the variable and be able to manipulate the object through the variable. [code]Again this is a simplified version of my code but the structure is similar.

I've got a piece of code where, for all the world, it looks like this fails in IE 6:
hometab = document.getElementById('hometab');
but this succeeds:
hometabemt = document.getElementById('hometab');
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before, or am I dreaming?

In processing the response from an AJAX call, assume the returned xml string as:
"<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<options>
<option text="new search..." value="search..."/>[code].....
Now, in the javascript:
1)If I use ajaxRequest.responseXML, I can directly use it as DOM document, such as: ajaxRequest.responseXML.getElemetnByTagName("option");
2) Or, I can use another way(assume on Firefox):
var parser=new DOMParser();
doc=parser.parseFromString(ajaxRequest.responseText,"text/xml");
doc.getElemetnByTagName("option");
My questions are.Since I can use ajaxRequest.responseXML.getElemetnByTagName("option") directly, I do not need DOMParser to convert.On the other hand, if the ajaxRequest.responseText is NOT of the XML format, the parser.parseFromString will not work any way.Then, why (under what circumstance) should one use DOMParser?

I'm having trouble figuring out what's going on with IE6's
Msxml2.XMLHTTP object. I have two feed addresses in this stripped down
version of my code below. Both work fine in Firefox (using the
XMLHttpRequest object), but only the thinkgeek one works in IE. In the
processFeed function, it shows the problem - the first alert shows 0
for the wikihow feed in IE, though it can still display the
responseText. Any insight? Code:

I am trying to build a very simple Ajax example with JavaScript and PHP. Basically, the goal is to populate a select list with values dependent on the selection in another list. I am able to do a GET from a server-side script and I see the XML displayed correctly in XMLHttpRequest.responseText. However, when I try to check XMLHttpRequest.responseXML, I am not able to get anything out of it. The alert() shows it as an "Object", so it's not null. I have tried getElementByTagName() from both responseXML and responseXML.documentElement, each time giving a legitimate inner tag, but nothing comes out. What is the correct way of doing it? This is my JavaScript and HTML code:

I have several functions with code along the lines of:
var xmlDoc = requestXML("ajax.asp?SP=SelectRelatedTags&tag=" +
array[i]);
The requestXML() function includes the code:
var xmlDoc = null;
http_request.onreadystatechange = function() {
if (http_request.readyState == 4) {
if (http_request.status == 200) {
xmlDoc = http_request.responseXML;
} else {
alert('There was a problem with the request.' +
http_request.status);
}}};
http_request.open('GET', url, true);
http_request.send(null);
return xmlDoc;
However, the last line (the return) executes before the readyState
reaches 4. How do I return the xmlDoc to the functions only once the
xmlDoc has been assigned? I tried putting the return statement in a
while loop with the condition that the readyState must = 4 - this
worked, but makes the browser popup a message saying the script is
slowing down the system.

The situation is; I receive a response back from the server which i only a part of html code. e.g. a table like <table <tr><td>high</td></tr>........ </table>. In other words, I receive
file as a response which has a part of html file.
My aim is to replace an existing document node with the new response.
If I run the following lines (JavaScript):
var parsedText = document.createTextNode(req.responseText);
body.replaceChild(parsedText, toReplace)
It replaces the node 'toReplace' with html codes with the tags include which is not what I want. The html tags are not wanted but should display in correct format as specified by html (a tabular form if htm tag is <table>)

Any neat way to copy a snapshot of one array to another?
A normal assignment results in the second array pointing to the first,
with changes to either array affecting both.
As a trivial example:
var a=new Array();
a[0]="zero";
var b=a;
b[1]="one";
alert("a="+a.join("*")+String.fromCharCode(10)+"b="+b.join("*"));
.... this results in a and b being identical two-element arrays.
Is there any easy way to set array (b) to be a copy of (a) BY VALUE -
ie using the contents of (a) as they were at the moment of assignment,
but leaving the two arrays separate so that subsequent changes to one
array does not affect the other?

I have the html contents from an iframe stored in a mysql data record. I now want to load that back into the iframe. I can assign the php var to a js var using PHP Code:
var scontent='<? echo ($html) ?>'
but the string has been saved to the db with newline chars in it and is causing a js error because it is being interpreted as an un-terminated string:
var scontent='<P>This is a test</P>
<P><FONT color=#ff0000>Red</FONT></P>
<P><FONT color=#ff0000><STRONG>Bold</STRONG> <U>Underline</U> <EM>Italic</EM></FONT></P>
<P><FONT color=#0000ff>Blue</FONT></P>'
I have tried stripping the newline chars out using php: PHP Code:
var scontent='<? echo (str_replace("
","",$html)) ?>'
It didn't work. I was wondering if there was a way of assigning multiple lines to a js var. any ideas?

I am barely familiar with javascript. I have this html code with an embedded iframe. The html file in the iframe refreshes every once in a while. That is fine. However, in IE, there is this annoying click with every refresh. I googled a bit and saw a few solutions. Seem to me that if I fetched the contents of the HTML file (AJAX call) and assigned it to existing document.
1. How do I assign an entire document in JS?
2. If I did this would this prevent the clicks?

I have a situation where I'm trying to assign a value to an elements innerHTML. When I do this, the value is assigned, but it causes havoc on subsequent javascript calls.I realize this is kind of vague but I'm at my wits end on what to do. I've tried assigning the innerHTML value "NA", just plain text, and it has the same effect.Without being too confusing, I have a table of data inside a <div> where the user can navigate up/down by pressing the <enter> key, pg up/pg dn and arrow up/arrow down. When they move from record to record, I'm highlighting the new row and "de-highlighting" the old row. The row has many fields but only one fill in field which is where the user enters the quantity of the item to be ordered. This is on a local network using the Firefox browser.
Without the above line, all is well. When I use the above line, it messes up the highlighting of the row but also makes the fill-in field "appear" disabled. What I mean by that is when you type a number, you don't see the value change (even though the field has focus and the value is selected) but once you leave that line, the value you typed then appears in the fill in. Normally the value will change as you type a new value.

I'm running a PHP script to check whether the user is logged in or not. If the user is not logged in they are redirected to the login.php page.What I would like to do is redirect them to the PHP page but also grab the URL they were previously on and assign it to a hidden field in the login.php so that I can redirect them back to the page they were on while keeping the URL bar clean.Problem, I know that PHP cannot recognize a hash [URL] so I would need to grab the url through javascript instead of PHP.

I am currently putting together a trivia game and I have stored several items in an array for example the questions, and the answers, points value... etc.
but my dilemma is I have to assign an "id" to the elements in the the array so i can use the function getElementById() to call the information. I do not have a clue how to do this.
*** also the second issue is my array is showing an error as UNDEFINED BUT i have declared it in "var triviaArray"
this is my array:
var triviaArray = new Array [
triviaArray["What's the capitol of Canada?","TORONTO","VANCOUVER","OTTAWA","QUEBEC",10,"choice3"],
triviaArray["How old was Michael Jackson when he died?","35 yrs","50 yrs","40
