AJAX Problem With Firefox

Feb 17, 2006

I have a page that "logs" changes made to input fields using ajax to
pass data to a cgi. I use POST and it works fine most of the time (all
the time in IE). But it fails when I get the data from a popup that
invokes a function that in turn invokes ajax. Code:

JQuery :: Ajax Not Working In Firefox?

Sep 2, 2009

I'm having an issue in firefox. Here's my ajax call:

$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "newcoleng",
data: "F10=Yes&F11=No",
success: function(data){
alert( "Data Saved: " + data );
}
});

The post always comes back a success in both IE and Firefox. The html response comes back as expected when using IE. However, the html response when using Firefox brings back an error from the server instead of what is expected. I'm not sure why there is a difference when using Firefox. My guess is that the content-type that the server is expecting is not correct when using Firefox.

IE presented no problems, but firefox insists on mangling the chars.

Here's what I'm currently trying. code...

If I look at what is posted using the tamperdata plug in I can see that the charset specified in the header is utf-8. But the chars in the posted data are garbled.

Any ideas how I sort this?

Ajax :: Firefox Call Fail ?

Mar 12, 2010

I have an Ajax call and it keeps return nothing versus some text when the ready state is 4, and the status is 0 inside Firefox 3.6.

I debug the server and it did return some text. The browser just doesn't expose it.

The JSP code is in a Weblogic server in port A, the JS code is included in the JSP coming from Weblogic port B (2nd server, same host). The Ajax call URL is on the same Weblogic server/port B as the JS. The Ajax call is started from a click on a button from the JSP page serving on port A).

Here are the configurations that works with the identical code:

1) Exactly like above using Internet Explorer

2) Exactly like above using Firefox, with the exception that the server is OC4J versus Weblogic

3) Exactly like the above (Weblogic), with the exception that the JSP and JS codes are in the same (single) server/port and using Firefox browser

So this is very strange. The same Weblogic server would work if all files are in a same server. In any case, the server code always work, and always return valid value (I wonder if some header is different). In fact IE works.

I think it's maybe security issue of Firefox handling of 2 servers. However, the same Firefox does work with OC4J servers.

Firefox - Replacing The Whole Page By The New One In Ajax Response

Sep 24, 2006

We have the following situation - when Ajax request is sent what's
being returned by the server is usually an XML (which is used for DOM
updates) but sometimes it's HTML which is a whole new page that should
replace an existing one. I.e when we issue an Ajax request we don't
know what will be returned and analyze the response to act accordingly.

Now, the way to replace the current document with a new one used to be
easy and portable for both browsers (we're only supporting IE6 and
Firefox 1.5):

document.open();
document.write( head );
document.write( body );
document.close();

where "head" and "body" are two parts of the result HTML. We had to cut
it to two (rather than going simply with document.write( NewHTML ))
because of IE - our head section contains references to external
JavaScript files (<script type="text/javascript"
src="sth.js"></script>) and IE only loads them when document.write()
call ends. So if body contains any script block (<script
type="text/javascript".. </script>) using any of JS referenced by
head - IE would fail with something like "Resource undefined" if we
push the whole new HTMl in one go by using document.write( NewHTML ).
But it worked perfectly fine in Firefox, meaning

document.open();
document.write( NewHTML );
document.close();

did the job just fine. What's even more important - it also evaluated
all JavaScripts correctly - both in external files referenced by the
head and in the JS blocks embedded in the body.

Until Firefox 1.5.0.6/7 where things stopped working completely - our
lovely and used-to-be portable code

document.open();
document.write( head );
document.write( body );
document.close();

caused Firefox to loose all CSS/JS and display an HTML only page (as if
CSS/JS were disabled). Removing document.close(); improved the
situation a bit by displaying the page with CSS this time but still -
*no* JavaScript was evaluated (meaning, JavaScript blocks embedded in
the document's body were not evaluated).

I took a different path from this point by pushing the new content to
document's head and body "innerHTML". It worked but not for JS
evaluation - I had to do that manually. To evaluate the JS referenced
in the head section of the document - I've traversed the head's DOM
tree while looking for the "script" nodes, then downloaded all of them
one by one using a synchronous Ajax calls (don't laugh!) and eval()-ed
the response. To evaluate JS blocks embedded in the body of the
document - I've traversed the body's DOM tree while looking for the
"script" nodes and eval()-ed them.

The problem is following: eval()-ing external JS files after
downloading them with Ajax doesn't work in 100% of cases - some
statements using Prototype functions fail to execute ("prototype.js" is
one of external JS files referenced in the head). Anyway, I'm almost
sure that what I'm doing is plain wrong, i.e it's sounds silly to
download all JS files referenced in the head and eval() them !

So how do I fix it ? Simply put - how do I replce the content of the
document to the completely new one received as a response to
asynchronous Ajax call ? The new content conatins doctype, head, body -
it's a completely new page. And all JS referenced in the head and
embedded in the body should be evaluated as well.

I really wish

document.open();
document.write( head );
document.write( body );
document.close();

was working in Firefox as before. Is it simply a Firefox bug, should I
submit it ? Btw, document.open.write.write.close() works just fine in IE6.

JQuery :: Code - Repeatable - With Firefox 3 And AJAX

Sep 9, 2009

I have found a problem with Firefox 3 and AJAX, and give code to replicate it below.

The problem is when you have a resource, e.g. /docs/1234, which is fetched both directly as a web page and as AJAX (XMLHttpRequest). The server detects these cases based on the X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest header, and sends back different content, e.g. just a raw div or wrapped in a full HTML page.

The problem is when you use a jQuery AJAX request to fetch the page again. If Firefox has /docs/1234 in its cache, then load('/docs/1234') wrongly gets the non-XHR version of the page, and this is the version it will insert into the DOM. This screws up the page, since you get a second copy of the layout wrapper HTML inside the original layout.

The code below replicates this:

- The home page (/) fetches /docs/1234 into the lower pane using XHR
- click on the link to fetch /docs/1234 as a full HTML page
- click back, and the main page ends up inserting the full /docs/1234

HTML into the lower pane

You can see that I've set a Cache-Control: header, which ought to prevent /docs/1234 from being cached at all, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. You can confirm it's present using curl -v [url]

This problem doesn't occur with Opera. Looking at the server logs, when you hit Back you see that $.load fetches a new copy of the page, so the AJAX request isn't using a local cached copy. (This is true even without setting the Cache-Control header) So arguably this is a Firefox problem. However, since part of the purpose of jQuery is to abstract away and compensate for browser differences, I thought I'd raise it here first.

The only workaround I can think of is to use a different URL for XHR requests, e.g. add '?xhr=true' to the end.

To run this code, you'll need ruby and 'gem install sinatra'

JQuery :: Memory Leak With 1.6.1 Ajax And Firefox 4.0.1?

May 28, 2011

Attached is a sample html file (named jqmleak.html - rename it to remove the txt extension and drop it into your web server to test for yourself) that I've put together to demonstrate a memory leak with the $.ajax function in jQuery 1.6.1 when run in Firefox 4.0.1. The file loads jQuery 1.6.1 from the Google API CDN. Next, a simple function is defined that runs $.ajax to request the html file itself. This function is then set to run once every second using setInterval.

In Firefox 4.0.1, on both Win XP and Linux (ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit), I can watch the amount of memory consumed by Firefox gradually rise. It takes a few minutes for the problem to be observed, because initially the memory will decrease with no other activity in the browser. Then after about 5 minutes or so, I can watch the memory used by Firefox slowly but steadily increase. I can use the handy 'about:memory' tool in Chrome to monitor this alongside other browsers. Chrome, Opera, and IE do not exhibit the same problem with this test. Their memory usage will vary within a range of about 2 or 3 mb, but over a long period of time they do not increase their total amount of memory used. This problem is only happening in Firefox 4.0.1 as far as I can tell (I also used safe mode in Firefox to make sure no plugins were interfering with the test). I have tried both GET and POST methods with the $.ajax call, and with the cache setting both enabled and disabled. The result is the same.

Is this a jQuery problem, or maybe instead a bug with Firefox? I see similar bugs reporting memory leaks in other situations, but usually specific to IE. I was about to report a bug for this, but I thought I'd check here first to see if anyone can duplicate this problem, and/or point out what I should do to prevent the memory leak in Firefox.

AJAX :: Working With Firefox But Not With Internet Explorer

Mar 28, 2009

Here's another cross-over issue between the two browsers: IE and Firefox Please, take the time to view my test website: www seemyinvestments dot com I suggest you use Firefox first, Note the first page will be the index.php for the very website itself. Please, scroll down the source code file until you see the following line: $mainframe =& JFactory::getApplication('site');

Note the word, JFactory, is underlined, and the word, getApplication, is in green. Clicking on either word will successfully invoke a AJAX function in Firefox. For example, a popup window will appear in the upper-righthand corner of the browser if you click on the green word, getApplication. (The popup has test data in it so it doesn't make any sense right now.) Clicking on the word, JFactory, will display that source code file using AJAX....quick and clean.

With Internet Explorer, this is all suddenly broken! I swear it worked as good as in Firefox, and now suddenly nothing happens. With IE, two runtime errors occur. One Syntax Error, Line 214, and the other is a 'Expected Identifer' error, Line 4114. How the heck can I track down these errors? (What's out there an IE equalvent to FireFox's Error Console??)
