I am using the following code to show/hide part of an html page. It
works in Netscape and Firefox but dies in IE: "Error: document.layers
is null or not an object"....
Why the following code has the error: 'document.mainform.unknownHw' is null or not an object?

I am trying to setup a form with radio buttons. Each radio button has an OnClick event. When a radiobutton is clicked the current set of radio buttons will be replaced with a new set using document.createElement("input"). Each new radio button needs the same onclick event addedas in the initial set of radio buttons. I first tried:
element.setAttribute('onclick', MyFunction(value));
This, however, will somehow automatically trigger the onclick event! I searched on the internet and found this as the solution:
var new_onclick = function() { alert("this works!"); };
element.setAttribute('onclick', new_onclick);
This will give a "Object" is undefined error!
I've been trying for hours and I can't figure out why IE6 is throwing an derror on the following line of code.
Code:
var parts = rgbString.match(/^rgb((d+),s*(d+),s*(d+))$/); This is the function:
Code:
function rgbToHex(rgbString)
{
var parts = rgbString.match(/^rgb((d+),s*(d+),s*(d+))$/);[code]....
And this is the error:'null' is null or not an object
I have come across an issue that only happens with IE.I have a custom save function that is designed to handle different ajax submits but I will simplify it for debugging. The issue is that once I make a submit everthing is fine at first. Then once I try to submit a second time it craps out. I am checking to see if there is an onsubmit function and then executing it like so before continuing. After the inital submit it is no longer found. When I alert the typeof document on the form it returns object but when I add the onsubmit it says object expected or object is null or undefined.
Code:
function secureBarSubmit(formId)
{
alert(typeof document.getElementById(formId)); // object always
alert(typeof document.getElementById(formId).onsubmit); // func first time then it is broken

Site - [URL] Location of js and css - [URL] The jCarousel works great in all other browsers, but in IE, when you get to the end of the jCarousel it gives the "Error: 'url' is null or not an object" pop up and it won't let me use the left arrow buttons to go back.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am getting an error on this code - sometimes! - and I'm not sure what it is. If I run this as is there is no error. If I add it into another page with other stuff it's ok for a while and then I get an error. So, I added my new page block my block to this code and waited for the error to appear so I could determine a conflict - but it was fine. And then a few clicks later the error.
This is the error in IE. In Firefox it seems to be fine.

Code:
The function is simply called in an onclick event. you can ignore the for loop that all works fine, that just swaps some images in a list.
But the line that is causing the problem is supposed to insert the id of the element that called the function into the input 'ratingField'
What is wrong with this line of code? the debugger says 'is null or not an object'
There is nothing wrong with star.id it is used elsewhere in the function and definately contains a value so I think the problem might be with the ratingInput.value part or the line
This is the code, and I couldn't figure out whats wrong, it gives an error in IE, "document.sitenav.prev is null or not an object"

I know for a fact that it is an object and I'm pretty sure that it isn't null. I will give you a link to the page that I'm troubleshooting even though it's embarrassingly ugly. Does anyone have
an idea of why it's not seeing the <select name=finish> on Line 183 in <Form Name="myform">?
I am trying to select all radio buttons in a document that are not disabled (I thought this had to be: "has attr type=radio and at the same does not have attr disabled=disabled", but I have lost all faith in that). I am sure this is a very simple thing, and I usually dont waste ppl time by asking stupid questions, but I have no idea how do do it. I have experimented for a whole day and is frustrated and tired.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out this script doesn't display any text in the
child window and why I'm getting the null or not an object error.
It's taken directly from the Javascript and DHTML cookbook (not listed
in the book errata on o'reilly website). Initially I get an error
"window.dialogArguments.yourName" is null or not an object. Then I
fill out the field on the form, press the button and the child window
does display but there is no text inside the child window.
Questions: Should I be declaring an object that isn't currently
declared like "window"? or is "window" a built in object that doesn't
need declaring? do I need to assign the dialogDoc.html or "result" to
"document" somehow? It looks like they have me putting a value in
"result" then never actually using "result"... confused... Using ie

Here is a suggestion for the documentation. It can be added to General_Guidelines. This is important because, for me at least, I had to figure it out on my own how to deal with radio buttons. A suggestion in the documentation would have saved me a chunk of time. [URL] Error Placement for Radio Buttons (and perhaps checkboxes). If the default placement of the error message doesn't work for your radio buttons, here is a suggestion.
First, here is my customized message, in jQuery("#frm").validate. Notice the <br> tag.
messages: {
x_gender: " Select One<br/>",
},
Also in the validate function.
// the errorPlacement has to take the table layout into account
// "error" is the error message, as a jQuery object. The element is the first of the group of radio inputs.
errorPlacement: function(error, element) {
if ( element.is(":radio") ) {
error.prependTo( element.parent() );
} else { // This is the default behavior of the script
error.insertAfter( element );
}}
I propose this as the default method for radio buttons. And perhaps checkboxes. This way, in my form html at least, the error message appears on a line just above the first radio button. Otherwise, it appeared immediately to the right of the button, between the button and the label.
i am starting a new project using Visual Studio 2010 ad using the same jQuery filesofa previous project that didn't cause errors.Visaul Studio always raisesthe same error in jquery.min.js Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'parentNode' is null or not an object I click on "continue" for that error message and the page loads fine and I don't see the javascript error icon in the bottom left corner of IE. This really baffles me. When I launch the application using Firefox I don't get an error in Visual Studio. Does anyone have any tips on debugging this jquery.min.js ? Has anyone seen something similar. Just starting this project and I already lost 12 hours troubleshooting this problem. I've looked at the html code and I can't see anything that would cause an error Here is the HTML.

I'm trying to create a questionnaire style series of radio buttons which are hidden and then a different set of radio buttons displayed depending on the previous answer. eg
Q1 Is it a man? (if select yes then display)
Q2 Is he called John? (if no then display)
Q3 Is he called Gary? and so on...
I've been testing using the code below but wondered if anyone had any ideas on how this could be done easily?
