Return Value From Fn - Doesn't Execute The Catch Clause In A Consistent Manner
Mar 26, 2011
What to return from my functions. Initially I was returning true or false to indicate success. But really, true only indicates that the function completed, not that it successfully did what it was supposed to do.
Try/catch is pretty useless as the browser tends to ignore most errors and so doesn't execute the catch clause in a consistent manner.
I notice libraries tend to return an object reference, which would be undefined on failure.

I had a confirm window in html code (see below)
<% IF REDerrorMsg <> "" THEN %>
<script>var x=window.confirm("");document.write(x);</script>
<% end if %>
It displays on page as True/ False when I click 'ok' or Cancel. I need to write code in such a way when 'true' return ' Do Insertion', when cancel 'Abort Insertion'. How to catch the value 'x' in server side code in VB.

FF, Safari, Opera all execute this javascript code to refresh the page properly, but in IE version 8.0.6001.18904 the page doesn't seem to refresh on click of orange_refresh button. I have checked out a different version of IE8, don't recall exact version, but it did seem to work fine in that one, whatever version it was probably the latest now that I think of it. Check out code below any sug.'s could be helpful, though its probably a bug..
<a href="javascript:document.location.reload();"
onmouseover="window.status='Refresh'; return true"
onmouseout="window.status='Page Refreshed'"><img src="image/orange_refresh.png"
width="30" height="30" border="0" /></a>

$("#scroll").hover(function(){
$(this).find(".front").stop().animate({
top:"184px"},500,function(){
$(this).find(".front").stop().animate({ top : "7px"}, 300);
});
});
I try to make a scrolling picture. when mouse roll over the image with .front class will scroll down, but it has to come back after mouse roll out. the scroll down is working but I wrote a callback function, but it doesn't work.
html part
<div id="scroll">

I have a function defined in my document's <head> section which adds a <script> tag to a specified <div> tag. The added <script> has a src="" attribute pointing to a PHP file, which dynamically returns JavaScript. In Safari, the src file isn't downloaded. Neither is any code contained within the new script tag [such as alert()]. In IE(6) and Firefox, this works as expected. Here's my code:

I'm trying to load one page into another using the .load() method. This loaded page contains a script that I want to execute when it has finished loading. I've put together a simple example to demonstrate:
Index.html:
<html>
<head>
<title>Jquery Test</title>
[Code]....
When the link is clicked, the content should load and the second paragraph should fade away. However it doesn't execute. It is not just a matter of the DOM not being available, a simple alert("") won't execute either. However, if I do away with the #toLoad selector in the .load() call, it works fine. I am not sure why this is, as the <script> block is clearly in the scope of the #toLoad div? If the script from content.html was in the .load() callback, it works fine. I have worked around the problem by having the callback use .getScript () to load "content.js" afterwards and have the JS logic in there. This is arguably a more elegant solution anyway, but I'm keen to know *why* the above doesn't work, is it a bug?

I'm using ajax to grab a response from a PHP page, on success, the ajax sets a variable. After the line that calls the ajax function is the line the returns the variable (a global variable). Problem is, because the variable is returned right after the ajax function is fired, it doesn't give the ajax enough time to set the variable. The work around I've thought about would be using the ajax function as a variable, and returning that variable in the initial return line.
Here's some code for reference:
The function that will return the response I'm trying to collect:

The value of lastModifier varies from browser to browser. For example, for a server writing the header:Last-modified: Fri, 04 Jun 2010 20:41:59 GMTSafari 4 puts out a literal string that is exactly what is found in the document header, Fri, 04 Jun 2010 20:41:59 GMTFirefox 3.6 and Internet Explorer 8 put out a reformatted string in local time (not sure if it's the server's local or the browsers local, since my server is in the same time zone).06/04/2010 13:41:59Is there any way to get a consistent lastModified string without doing browser sniffing? I would expect sniffing to not be resilient to change, given that lastModified output has changed before in browser history, based on posts from several years ago, and will likely change again.

I'm trying to write some javascript code that will swap two rows in a
table, in an attempt to provide users with an easy and visual way to
manually change the order of the listed items in a table.
The sample code works as it should in IE, and switches the two rows
nicely.
In Mozilla however it fails the first time, but for some odd reason it
works fine afterwards.
Mozilla doesn't seem to be removing the duplicated node the first time,
which makes it appear as if an extra node is inserted into the table
(which is actualy the case), but on subsequent attempts, it seems to be
removing the duplicated node perfectly... Code:

Is there a more concise way to do something like the the
desired code below?
The gripe is with the try-catch syntax. It takes *way* too
many lines of code to evaluate a conditional expression
when zero or more parts of the conditional expression may
trigger an error. In this case, the trigger is a call to
a non-defined (null) object.
In other words, how can you do a more simple 'try' statement
that simply spits out true or false, depending on whether
the 'tried' code threw an error or not?
Defining a function don't seem to work because you
can't pass the 'try' code as an argument. Extending the
'Global' constructor is not an option, so now what? Code:

I'm looking for reminders on how to ...
1. Get all links in a page.
2. Apply an onclick event handler,
3. that cancels the usual link click event
4. and puts the link address into a form element code...
What's behind the question is a screen scraper test I'm doing, whereby I call a website address via a form, and clicking on any page link should put the target address into the form and then submit it. I think I'm on the right tracks - it's just cancelling the original click event I'm not sure about.
