Display Placeholder Text In Older Browsers
Aug 31, 2011
how to display placeholder text in older browsers. I've succeeded in applying the following code (taken from p224 of "DOM Scripting", by Jeremy Keith) to a single input by its ID...
Code:
function elementSupportsAttribute(element, attribute) {
if (!document.createElement) return false;
var test = document.createElement(element);
[code]...
how these functions should be used and how I can change "resetFields" to use the test function from the first code example, instead of Modernizer?

This should be an easy answers since I am a newbee and never redirected older browsers.For example I am learning JSON now and the below browsers are the only browser that can use the faster and safer JSON.parse parser. older browsers need to use javascripts eval() to parse json files to javascript objects.

I have some JS code that uses XMLHttpRequest to get an XML file then loops through to display each item from the file. This happens relatively quickly but there is about a second delay before the content shows up--I want to display a loading message while that is happening. Everything's working great in Firefox, but all the webkit browsers I've tried (Chrome + Safari), don't display the loading message in any fashion. It's not that the function to display the loading message isn't firing (because if I open it and then take out the code to close it, it does appear after all the XML processing is done).
I've even tried making opening the loading message a prerequisite (with setTimeout even, to make sure it's not just happening too fast), for running the XMLhttprequest, and it still don't show up. My hypothesis is that the browsers seem wait until all the processing is completed (ie: the XML file has been downloaded and converted to HTML) before doing anything. So both the open and close loading message functions are firing, but they're "let loose" at the same time so the net result is no loading message. I'm not exactly at liberty to disclose the code, so I'm hoping there is some known issue with this that someone is aware of, without having to show all my code.

I am new to jQuery but I have managed to get the awesome anythingSlider to work on other sites but I can't work out why this isn't working here: [URL]. On FF, Chrome and Safari on Mac some of the images appear with incorrect text: The slider is set up like so:
<div class="anythingSlider">
<div class="wrapper">
<ul><li>
image a
text a
</li>
<li>
image b
text b
</li> etc...
</ul>
</div>
</div>
However, inFF, Chrome and Safari on Mac the image a appears with text b, image b appears with text c, etc. I have gone through the code and I can't see what's wrong.

I have a script that runs a sprite animation on the canvas, adapted from here: [URL] After wondering why it wouldn't work on Safari or older versions of Firefox, I saw this: [URL] and implemented the suggested shim. However, I'm still getting some errors that I can't explain for the life of me. To make this easy for everyone, I threw it in a jsfiddle: [URL]

Is there a jQuery way for me to retrieve the placeholder attribute of a form input element? I've tried the obvious:
alert
(
$

[Code]....
but it returns undefined in both firefox and chrome for some reason! All other attributes are displayed fine with the above code... is this a bug in jQuery? using the latest version. Is there a workaround?

I have a script i downloaded to add a twitter feed to a page on my site. Everything works perfectly, except there is at least 15-20 seconds until twitter loads, so what the user sees is a blank spot, and if JavaScript is disabled, its obviously a blank space.I wanted to add a placeholder such as an animated gif to that spot, I just don't know how to go about doing that, and how would i have the gif hide when the script functions.

The banner on my page takes longer to load than the website... Right now nothing is at the top, then suddenly it will appear then after it loads. I was wondering if it's possible to have a placeholder there that says "Feature Banner is Loading" so visitors know something will appear there before they click away to another page.

just came across this in a book for browser javascript on/off detection:
Code:
<noscript>
<img src="monitor.php?scriptoff=true" />
</noscript>
just wondering if browsers when js is off will ever access any
<script type="text/javascript" src="file.js"></script>
files? i mean wouldn't it be better not to bother with the noscript thing and just be aware of if file.js is accessed? or do some browsers access the file.js even when js is off?

I currently use a switch case structure to display text so different stuff
appears each day of the week. It is a pain in the butt to put the text in
"document.write" statements. Is there any way to do this without breaking
the input text (which can be a page or so of text) into individual lines?

I'm looking for a script which can look up a number in a HTML document. There are 12 of these numbers on different HTML sites. I want to display them on one page without going through the trouble of looking at each HTML page to see that number.
The number on that page changes once in a while (without having a certain pattern) and therefore it would be usefull to display all 12 numbers on one page.
In short; Is there any way of script that can read regular text from an HTML page (maybe indicated by line number?) and then display that number on a page?

This is a follow up to my older thread, about tables and finding images within them. So after getting some help from "Krupski" :thumbsup: I found myself stuck again. I'm trying to go at this rather from an other point of view, instead of getting the cell information I am now trying to get the alt text value. from within the image tag. but being a novice at this well ive hit a wall. :confused: My code so far. searches though the table finding the sad images then i want it to display the Alt-text or an other value table_id or similar. also is there a fast way of putting in Alt text like A1,2,3 B1,2,3 etc like an automated loop. (might work on this after the main problem is dealt with)

I have an ASP page that send data to a database. One of the fields
is "Date" (no quotes). The form name is FrontPage_Form1. I would like
the Date field to auto populate. So, I did some research and the only
thing that I could come up with that worked was this:
<script>
function upDate() {
FrontPage_Form1.Date.value=new Date();
}
setInterval('upDate()',1000);
</script>
