I am having problem regarding browser issues! I need to accomplish this task:Browser requirements should be( IE7,IE8,Firefox 3, Firefox 4, Safari 5, Opera, Chrome) and higher. I want to detect if user's browser is below the requirements compatibility above then I want them to redirect to error page, let say compatibility.html if browser is below requirements!..If the browser meets the requirments, it should continue to load the page requested by the user.

On my site i use a lot of features that are unsupported by older browsers, and right now it looks pretty stupid when the features are only partially shown. So i was wondering if there's a way of making the browser look to different css files depending on which browser and version it is. For example, css3 gradient backgrounds are supported in firefox 3.6 or something, but not in 3.0. All the hacks out there is to 3.*, so it changes for the allready working 3.6 too if i hack it. I want to controll it so that i have a specific css file for the none-supporting version and lower and one for the supporting and above. I looked at a bad browser plugin (because it has some of the basic features im looking for)

I've been to sites where they've got a script that bounces me out 'cause I don't use IE. That always leaves me feeling ruffled and having a door slammed in my face.
I've been looking around and can't find a script that detects the following:
First visit popup
Browser Version
JavaScript Enabled
(Connection type would be useful like 56k minimum)
It opens in a new window, gives the "option to continue"
(click continue, closes window)
Click "Cancel" would politely bounce them back from where ever they came from as well as closing the little window.
Am I dreaming?

Basically, I need a browser detection script that will detect what version of what browser the user is reading. My site works with IE 5.5SP2 and up, Netscape 7.2 and up, Opera 7.1 and up, and Firefox 1.0 and up (have not tested on any Mac browsers).
What I want the script to do is once it's detected a version of one of these browsers or higher, to continue loading the page. If it detects a lower version, or any other browser, I want it to direct users to a page telling them they are using an old or untested browser, where I have links to update the tested browsers and a link to continue to the site anyways
I have tried a couple scripts, but they only partially work. The one below seems to work so far for the two browsers I can test on (It goes to the good page for IE 6 and the bad page for NS 4.79 (I added Firefox and Opera myself, so I don't know if it works).
browser = navigator.appName
ver = navigator.appVersion
version = ver.substring(0,1)
if (browser=="Internet Explorer") {
if (version<="5.5")
document.location.href="index2.html"
}
if (browser=="Netscape") {
if (version<="7.2")
document.location.href="index2.html"
}
if (browser=="Firefox") {
if (version<="1.0")
document.location.href="index2.html"
}
if (browser=="Opera") {
if (version<="7.1")
document.location.href="index2.html"
}
How do I specify that IE 5.5 has to be 5.5 SP2? And how do I specify that every other browser in the universe except those lined out above in the code has to go to index2.html? I don't know how to specify that Safari has to go to index2.html while Netscape 8 doesn't.

Does somebody know the code to detect the Blackberry version with javascript? If its a blackberry i need to detect the version of the OS because our mobile site only support version 4.5.0.127 and up. If the version is under that i have to redirect the user to another page to tell him that his OS version is not supported, they have to update there OS before using our mobile site.
<script language=javascript>
<!--
if((navigator.userAgent.match(/blackberry/i)) && !request.getHeader("user-agent").matches("^BlackBerry[0-9]{0,6}/(4\. (5\.(0\.(1(2[7-9]|[3-9]{1}\d{1})|[2-9]{1}\d{2}){1}|[1-9]){1}|[6-9] |1[0-9]){1}|[5-9]|1[0-9]){1}.*") ) )
{
location.href='notcompatible.cfm';

I've obtained some server side PHP code which places the browser and version (taken from the USER AGENT string response header) in a class of my body HTML element i.e. <body class="ie ie7"> I'm using this as a CSS hook for cross browser styling.
Im running the site on Wordpress with a caching plugin which spits out a HTML version of the page. The problem is, is that the cache doesnt refresh on a per new user basis so if the first user comes in using Chrome this will get added to static file <body class="chrome"> and obviosly wont refresh if the next user is on say IE as it is now cached as a flat HTML.
I'm wondering is there a better way to do this client side and manipulate the DOM after the page has loaded? If so, anyone got any code that can do this?code...

The « navigator » object contains strings which
specify the browser and version; however, this is in general not
very genuine. Mozilla (and therefore Netscape 6+) allows this to
be freely set, and Opera and IE allow it to be modified. There
are also at least 25 other javascript capable browsers with
their own strings here.
Generally though, you don't need to identify which browser is
being used. There are alternative techniques, but which one you
choose depends on why you want to redirect browsers. If it's to
offer different CSS stylesheets, then....

Working on the basis that MOST Internet users to visit the site I have built, have IE6 or later, I would like to add a browser-detect capability that ONLY focuses on IE6 and sends the user straight away to the alternative page. If using a browser older than IE6 neither the real page, nor the alternative, will work anyway, so it doesn't matter which one fails for them. I've lost my Javascript book (shoot me in the head!) and trying to find browser detect code online, I keep finding massive reams of code where the intention is to detect exactly which browser is being used. I'm not bothered, unless its IE6.
The site works fine in Opera, Firefox and IE8, I had to tweak it slightly to work fine in IE7, but for IE6 it would completely ruin the feel of the site for everyone else if I were to tweak the main site. So, please if someone could paste the code that would say "If user's browser is IE6, then auto-redirect to this page",

Does anyone have a quick script to find which version of IE a page is
being viewed with?
Specifically, I want to seperate version 4 from versions 5+, and post a
warning against using 4.
I expect I'll have to search out the (navigator.appAgent) string for
the MSIE substring, but since I don't need it until tomorrow, laziness
dictates I ask here before getting on with it. Is there another
variable? a less cumbersome way?

In the home page (index.html) i have a flash intro. The first time a user sees the website, the intro should play. Once he goes to another page (about_us or contact_us) and comes back to the home page, it should show a different swf (the version without the intro) - i have created two swf files. I need to know how to change them when the user has already seen the intro or was in the home page before. When i googled, i found something on cookies. I have no clue on how to set them and change the swf file.

I have a page where I list hardware devices we monitor for customers. Each row displayed also shows the status of the device i.e. whether it's running, paused, starting up etc.
To improve page load times I list the devices but don't query for their status until the page is rendered. This is because some queries such as via SNMP or other API's can take as much as 5-10 seconds to respond. So for a list of say ten devices it could take well over a minute of the user looking at a blank page. So I do the following instead -
On the device list page I have the following script:
$(document).ready(function () {
var devices = $('div[name="runStatus"]');
devices.each(function () {
// Get device ID (I embed this using the HTML5
[Code]....
What I'm finding is that if I allow this script to run, all links on the page become unresponsive.
I'm guessing this is because I've quite a few almost parallel async requests blocking until they get a response from the server and somehow the "UI thread" is being blocked by this?
However I thought this wasn't supposed to happen with AJAX.
I find this 'blocking' behaviour to happen in IE8, Chrome 8.0 and Firefox 3.6. Chrome in fact shows the arrow cursor + spinning-toilet-bowl-of-death (I'm using Windows 7) as if the page isn't completely rendered.
There are only six or so items in the list and happens even if I comment out the $('div[data[data-deviceid=... line.

I have just written a expanding menu which works great in IE6/NS7, what I have installed to check with, but the first person I went to show it to had IE 5.0, and guess what? It fell over.
So, I am wondering if anyone has any ideas about how I can go about checking this in IE5. I am using XP and, while i haven't tried, my understanding is that I cannot have multiple versions of IE installed, is this right? If not where can I get older versions from?
