Call The Returned Value Of A Function Without Calling The Function?
May 13, 2011I am creating a little word guess game, with a random function which picks the word from an array of 10 words. The second function checks if the users' letter choice is part of the secret word. Currently, each time the checkGuess() function is called, the word is changed, probably because I am calling the wordPicker() function from within. The wordPicker randomly chooses the word, then returns that word. All I want to do is pull that word into the checkGuess function, without calling the wordPicker function as it currently does. Here is the code:

Apr 1, 2010When I use the ajax function to grab the remote content of some page, I would like to then apply jQuery selectors to that data. Does anyone know how this can be done? Let's say that I just grabbed the content from an html page. I would then like to be able to use a standard: $("#someID").val() to get the content of that page element.

Everything works great - the returned value is loaded into .postcontent perfectly. However, a 0 is appended to the end. Every time. Even if I return nothing, a lonely 0 shows up inside .postcontent.

More Than One Return Statement In Function?
Jun 29, 2011I have a desire to include more than one return statement in a function I have written so that when it has found the solution to a hit-testing series of conditionals, it returns the solution. The desire is to avoid further hit-tests when solution has been found. I've always felt that more than one return statement in a function is poor style, since it may lead to false execution of a function - by way of a later code edits - making a mistake by forgetting the multiple returns. My function is short and maybe the optimisation exists only in my head but are there serious reasons why one should not have more than return statement? This JS code executes in the Quartz Composer framework and has nothing to do with we programming (context (-:)
Here it is with three returns, it 'works' and I could replace all the break statements with return statements to finish optimizing:

Aug 9, 2010if i group some javascript into a function that returns false; how could i carry that 'false' out of the function so it can be used outside the function.the example below shows the validate function checks for a condition then returns false if it is met. i want this false to then be passed out of the function to then throw an error in its containing function. However, when you click on the same item twice it firstly hides and then reshows it, I need an if statement that basically states;
if "this?!" is visible/shown

I am unsure of the syntax and can't figure out what property I can trace out to see if the item is being shown or not.

The url is a very straightforward servlet that queries a database and returns either Y or N. That part is working fine. The first alert shows Y or N just as it is supposed to.
However, the second alert is always showing Turbo, as though the if statement is not able to compare properly. This is probably javascript rather than specific to jQuery, but can anyone see where I'm going wrong?

NaN Returned When Field Is Blank?
Feb 19, 2009The following code is my form, if one of the fields is left blank (and there will usually be one left blank) the calculation returns NaN and will not perform the task needed. I initially had the form set to calculate in metric kilometers and liters, when I converted the math portion to miles and gallons it started doing this.This is the line giving me the problems:
