Prompting User Before Closing The Browser
Jul 2, 2007
Does anyone know how to make it prompt the user if they try to close the browser window? Basically if someone goes to file->exit, or tries to navigate to another site, I want a confirmation box to pop up and say are you sure?
Please note I am not using this to annoy regular visitors - this is only going to be a part of my admin panel where I frequently forget to complete the last step, I just want to add a friendly reminder for myself.

A Client of mine wants a popup window to appear when a visitor to his site tries to leave. In this popup window he wants to ask 4 simple questions and offer a free gift.As popups are unpopular, and are generally blocked I went looking for another way round the problem.In some sites that I see now, I see a confirm box asking "Are you sure you want to leave this page?"Sometimes with a customised message in there as well.I was thinking of using something similar, and when the visitor presses "cancel" (to stay on the page and prevent the window closing) to then show the popup (either redirect to new page or use modal dialog overlay box, eg jQuery Thickbox).

Can anybody let me know how to detect when my user clicks the X button
on the window. I used unload event it did not work(on IE). My web page
is a .asp page which reloads itself when navigating on the site. Now
whenever the user clicks any links on the page the unload event is
triggered which is not what I want. I only want to detect when user
clicks the X button and not when the URL changes.
code i used:
<body onunload="alert('leaving window');">
Basically this alert window is triggered everytime the URL changes and
not just when the window closes(which is what i want).

I want to capture the event when a browser is closing, to give to the user
the posibility of close or no this browser. When the browser is closing,
this show a confirm window with two buttons: Accept and Cancel.
When press the Accept button, the browser is closing, and when press the
Cancel button, the browser isn´t closing.
I have tried with the event onunload, but this closes first the browser, and
then shows the confirm window.

I'm trying to get my form to save a user's data via cookies. I found a script at [URL], and it only seems to work if you refresh the page, but not if you close out the browser and restart.
<form action="process-contact.php" id="contact" method="post">

I created a simple cookie to save a high score and it works fine when I go to another site and come back without closing the browser, but when I close the browser and open a new one, the saved information is gone. This is what my save and load code looks like:
bestScore = parseInt(document.cookie);
document.cookie = bestScore.toString();

Ive looked and looked and can't find a solution to this problem... I want to have it so that when the users closes the window (by clicking the little [x] box at the top right hand corner), it prompts them asking if they really want to close the window. If they choose Yes then it does, if No, takes them back to where they just were. I know that this is possible with javascript, but is it possible to maybe coincide php w/ java in order to achieve this effect? If anyone can figure out a solution (possibly w/ code), ill be grateful..
secondly, is it possible to do the same w/ the user pressing the refresh button? By this i mean, if a user chooses to click the Refresh button in the toolbar of the browser, it alerts them saying somehting.
*The reason i don't ask this in the Javascript forum is because i need to work w/ php in order to do this.

I work for an association and we do many conference events. Our web provider has been developing an online registration module for their CMS to make things easier for us. One problem that we have had in the past is that people leave the registration page before completing the registration i.e. select payment method and click 'next button'. I suggested to use Javascript so that when people try to leave the page/close browser before submitting the form, that they get a message saying that their registration is not yet complete and that they will be invoived for the fee unless they cancel. I have been told that this is not possible to do.

I have an application that is using Classic ASP, SQL server and cookies. But unless the user goes all the way through the application and the details are removed, they stay in the database.
How can I detect when they close the browser or move away to another web url. I have several pages in my app, so I dont want any unload event firing when I change pages.
Only when I move to another website completely or close the browser.
All the code I've seen on the net so far will fire if i change url's. Oh and I need to be able to access the Session's data in order to remove it from the database.

I have a starting page, Page1.php that uses Page1.js.In Page1.js, I'm using the onclick event for a button that's on that page. When the button is clicked, it goes to Page2.php. Okay, fine.Page2.php is using Page2.js. But when the browser switches to page 2, I get a javascript error because, somehow, it's still referencing the Page1.js file. (Using IE8)So how do I 'dereference' the first javascript file, so that when Page2 loads, it doesn't still try to instantiate the objects in Page1.js? (I'm getting a null object error when Page2.php loads).

I own a game site and some users cheat by changing the browser URL. For example :
The URL for starting a game mission is this : ww.somesite.com/somethingaspx?htxm=18
And if they change the number to 87 they go to the end of he mission WITHOUT actually completing it.
They ONLY way to deal with this is by preventing users from changing the URL manually. Is there a way to do it? Like, if someone tries to change that number in the URL he gets a message and browser window closed(or something that will prevent him from going to that page)
Of course, the solution must not conflict with the normal navigation(which is the actual mission) which means the user should be able to navigate to different pages but NOT change the URL manually.

I am trying to get a way by which I'll know exactly when user goes out
of my site by clicking on close button in browser, So that w/e user
click close button in browser, I can send a signal to server.
This seems to be achievable with body unload events, but it is little
too much, as even if user navigate within my site, this event will be
generated, this can be avoided by handling onclick of each link, so
that I'll know exactly which link is clicked, but honestly this looks
over doing to me, any other smart short cut for finding out when user
click on X in browser?

I'm using a little javascript to help my site's design to fit the visitor's entire browser window.
Everything works great apart from one problem. If a visitor first loads the page and the browser isn't maximised, the page loads correctly BUT if the visitor then proceeds to maximize the browser, the page is still set for the minimised browser. This condition stays until the visitor goes to another section of the site or refreshes the page. When this happens, the page again loads correctly.
I would like to force a page reload whenever the browser is minimizedmaximized or is in any other way changed size. How can I do this?
